Final Fantasy XV Demo Previews/Impressions Thread

Do we have any good quality/uncompressed versions of the Early Versus XIII trailers? All those early trailers on youtube have shit quality

Inspired designs are fine. With the exception of some folks who seem legitshook that FF can have things like gas stations and cars, ( since they obviously never played VIII), by and large, the abundance of real-life-like things in FFXV isn't really an issue.

But just like how Noctis's car model doesn't exist in real-life, and how even the Roen designed clothing of Noctis isn't attributed to a 'Roen brand existing in the XV universe', but rather just a brand lending their fashion design onto the game... those kind of stuff are a much more subtle and immersive than "ok, Coleman camping stuff."

You know the Coleman stuff isn't new, right? SE just formally announced it, but it's been in footage for at least two months. Subtlety is on its side. People are mad today because it's been pointed out to them. Could've essily flown under the radar and for most people it still will.

I hope anime is a thing inside the game world of FFXV and Naruto has been airing and the royal house is actually in the middle of a huge legal battle with the creators of Naruto for using the image and likeness of the crown prince for Sasuke without royalties.\

get it? royalty not getting royalties?

If there's anime in FFXV I feel like Lucis would be playing something like Black Lagoon... idk.

Anyway, I don't see why people are only now getting mad about Coleman when we found out about it quite a while ago.

To be fair, we didn't know that Coleman would be so front and centre. Some of the new images have the logo right in our faces.

Sorry, I don't get what you're saying. How is Roen's clothes design different then the Coleman stuff?

Roen created designs for the world of Final Fantasy XV.

Coleman's real world products are in Final Fantasy XV.

Big difference, one is seemingly a partnership, the other is blatant product placement.

The problem with Coleman here more than anything is that it's direct rip from real world designs to the game. It smells like product placement, and it's literal product placement because those exist in the real world.

The difference with Roen is that those clothes were uniquely designed for the cast in this game. I think it added to the game.

For that reason, I totally understand that some people are upset regarding this. I guess to me it doesn't matter as much because I'm always open to any possibility to any fictional world, and also because I probably didn't know what 'Coleman' was before. To me it neither adds nor does it take away from the game; it's just a thing that's part of the game's world now no matter how you look at it.

Yeah, the fact that roen's stuff was specifically designed for the game while coleman's is not is also a very valid point.

Nah there was definitely a discussion about it before. It's only resurfaced because Square put out a press release.

If Noctis suddenly start saying "man, I want those new summer line-up from Roen" or starts going into Roen stores in the game itself, then it's no different.

As far as we know thus far, Roen's collaboration in this game is them basically just designing the costumes that will be worn by the main cast, and then some. It's somewhat similar to getting a famous composer to write a piece of music, or an guest artist to lend their art.

It's not as if Noctis's wardrobe is taken piece-meal from existing Roen clothing line-up. It's closer to Nomura outsourcing the clothing design work to a fashion brand.

Right.

It may sound funny, but I think the fact that there is Coleman in a fantasy world makes about as much sense as the fact that there is kanji writing all over Noctis' city. I mean where did that come from? Is there China in this world?

Sure: it's just language, so we might accept that it's a universality of relateable storytelling (like the fact that there are humans in the game). And Kanji and English have appeared in games like FFVII.

But the way in which Noctis' city is designed, with its Japanese building style (staircases on the outside of the buildings), Japanese style storefronts (as we saw in the 2011 trailer I believe).... Noctis' city is NOT just a generic realistic city as designed by a Japanese team - it is actually a deliberate recreation of modern Japan in a consiously fantasy world. That's the "fantasy based on reality" aspect that a lot of you have picked up on.

So I dunno... In that light, I do think real world brands make a kind of sense. For this entry. And let's be fair, the fact that It's something small like the camping equipment shows that it is probably mostly a subtle touch of that "fantasy based on reality" artistry, rather than a big bucks marketing move. My only concern would be that it opens the door to real product placement whorings in future entries, or even the final version of this entry.

Oh man, even the cooler box is a Coleman. Nice product placement.

And:

Honestly, if they just renamed it Boleman, a fictional brand, we really wouldn't be having this discussion other than potentially calling them lazy for blatantly copying the design of established camping tools brand.

Which is why personally, this isn't really anything that matters to me. It's just a very small nitpick that happens mainly because of their specific choice to incorporate product placement.

I if the summons are called
Archaeans
this time around, I can dig it. After hearing Esper and Eidolons being used after their respected established games(FFVI and FFIX), it's nice to actually use "new" terms for them in NEW games. I mean, we've had
"Summons" as default(used in FFIII, FFIV, FFV and FFVII), which is fine for a default, but we've also had Espers(FFVI), Guardian Force(FFVIII), Aeons(FFX), Avatars(FFXI) and Primals(FFXIV), just buck up and look for something new in this tradition, don't go back to the whole Esper/Eidolon thing. It's not hard, considering you could just Google search shit, go snooping on Encyclopedia Mythica or such for some word appropriate of a term.

The JP versions have always been consistent: shoukan kedamono, "summon beast". Only exceptions I know are FFVI which called them genjuu "phantom beast" and FFVIII, they were also called Guardian Force, using English loan words. I agree that's it's cool that came up with a new term in most of the English versions and was kinda disappointed when they recycled Esper and Eidolon.

FFXV's marketing campaign confirmed:

XV Collector's Edition includes a Tent and Coleman Roadtrip LXE 10,000BTU 2-Burner Propane Grill.
Someone photoshop a catoblepas standing in the water. LOL!

As for product placement, it IS kinda funny. Personally, while I'm more for original made-up brands appearing in games(Starstrucks Coffee, McRonalds...), as long as they aren't going ridiculous with the product placement(the Michael Bay way that you see in most of the Transformers movies, or for the fact, a LOT of big screen shameless flicks), I don't mind. I don't wanna see Noct down a bottle of coke and say, "That's taste's the REAL THING! Make it happy!!", smiles into the camera, holding the bottle perfectly so you could see the label. Though now it makes me wonder... if Agni will be a better coke spokeswoman than Noct.

Where I've argued about it so extensively in such a short of period of time I feel like it's out of my system so now I'm just sort of rolling with it. Thanks, guys. I needed that.

I know that about the Japanese versions, but yeah, with the localization, it's not hard to come up with SOMETHING new. Hell, when I was younger and made my own FF fanfic-type story(must've been sometime before FFVII, when I was still riding the pleasure waves of FFVI), I called the summons "Vanguards"(which was rooted in their placement in the story and world). The internet makes "word searching" SOOOO much more convenient than it was back then. And particularly, I'm getting sick of Eidolons. Not only was the term re-used for FFXIII, it was re-used for the modern versions of FFIV(remakes) and Type-0. Dammit, I totally would've preferred "War Gods" to "Eidolons".

Hm, okay, yeah. But Roen's still a real-world brand in the game's world and isn't their real logo on the clothes, too? Some of the clothes can even be bought in real life. There's also the Brixton (British brand) logo on Prompto's jacket and who knows if they had a hand in the creative process like Roen. How much could you have changed simple things like a Coleman cooler or plate, anyway.

XIV calls them banshin 蛮神. In English they are Primals or eikons.

I had no idea about this. Thank you, that's a cool bit of trivia.

I agree, the original Type-0 name for them was a lot better. I have no idea why the English localization went with "Eidolons". To tie it in as FNC? War Gods better described them and their purpose.

Also I'm with you. I dig the name for the XV summons.

Exactly. Some of us made that point, too. Saying the languages being in the game isn't as jarring as the Coleman stuff because it's just for convenience is only subjective/selective, as it's technically the same thing. If you want to be consistent you'd have to have fantasy languages in the game with real-world language subtitles for us.

Wait, how are they called in XV?
Archaean apparently. At least Titan is called so in the recent press text.

The Coleman brand is not a that big of a deal if it's just limited to camping equipment where we can only see whenever Noctis and co set up camp. It's not like they pan the camera towards a giant billboard on the highway with a Coleman advertisement plaster on it for a good minute.

I dunno. The camping is a recurring thing you have to do throughout the game. It's almost worse than a single billboard.
Both are stupid.

What's Archaean means?

Wiki: "The Archean Eon (/ɑrˈkiːən/, also spelled Archaean; formerly Archaeozoic /ɑrkiːəˈzoʊɪk/, also spelled Archeozoic or Archæozoic) is a geologic eon before the Proterozoic Eon, before 2.5 Ga (billion years), or 2,500 million years ago."

So basically Archaean = something old as hell. Summons in FFXV are supposed to be guardians protecting the planet.
"Still steeped in its Fabula Nova Crystallis roots, however, FFXV won’t be having its own version of l’Cie – the empowered beings present in both Final Fantasy Type-0 and Final Fantasy XIII and its sequels. Instead, Tabata hints that summoned beasts will play a larger role this time. As guardians of the world, these massive creatures – from what we’ve seen so far – will be protecting parts of the planet from destruction."

Never played a ff game, would it be good to start with this game?

Absolutly. Welcome! Just remember not to listen to backwards, rose-tinted glasses wearing FF fans trying to tell you how this one isn't a "real" FF :P

All Final Fantasy games are separate so this should be a great place to start. That said, if you decide to try others in the future, don't take this as being representative of the other games.
