Final Fantasy XV Gamescom Active Time Report - CNN reporting live from disaster scene

ATR summary:

  • We redesigned Regis.
  • Airships? We're behind and still working on it, maybe as DLC.
  • We're nowhere near done.
  • We can't announce a release window, even if we do have one.
  • Important questions about black bars and cosplay.
  • The prologue of the game has changed!
  • Luna is a strong female character even though nothing we've shown supports that.
  • The girl with black hair? We haven't named her yet.
  • Main baddie? Who knows.
  • Stay tuned for PAX when we'll show the same trailer.
  • Feedback forum! Not ready yet.
  • New stuff at TGS and working on a new demo.
  • Malboro fight with a bunch of seconds of gameplay and a brief stroll through some new landscapes.
  • Product placement for german beer.

Now I'm starting to believe that KH3 might ship before this game.

What a mess, haha.

Don't worry guys, we'll get our 2016 release. The rest of the game will be a text based dungeon crawler ala Nier.

It will be the most beautiful text you've ever read.

With Papyrus.

Holy shit. No way.

We're mad now, but we'll be crying and cheering the SE the next time they drop some good info, no matter how many months and years it takes, swearing up and down that "they've changed!"

We are truly the battered housewife of fandom.

I don't get people's obsession with a character being redesigned mid development. It's not the first game this happens to, and does it really matter whether this or that character is wearing a different hairdo? The game is faltering in more important places.

Yeah, same.

And I actually do like Regis rocking the beard.

But yeah, designs and story should be the least of your concerns right now people.

I know it's hard but try to not judge a game for what it's not or for what it could have been.

The main issue at hand is the apparent severe lack of development progress or SE being truly incompetent at showing it.

Speak for yourself. People are getting mad with this, I'm just imagining the tears when something similar happens with FF7R.

I try to not jump on bash bash bandwagons but what the hell is SE doing? How is the game still this incomplete and rough and still from the looks of it YEARS away.

Like i actually cannot understand how such a thing is possible.

That's exactly the reason why they should drop the setting and characters from Versus altogether. As long as Noctis and co. are in the game, people will compare this to Versus XIII and early XV.
Should've just been a new game altogether and Versus should've fallen into obscurity with FF Gaiden(the early concepts to the game that eventually became FFIX). It IS kinda poisonous keeping the "ghosts" around.

When a game has a development history this screwed up and scatterbrained I don't see how anyone can actually believe the end result is going to be anything more than some half-assed frankenstein disappointment.

They need to pump this turd out as soon as possible so they can finally rid themselves of the stench of Gen 7 and focus on a brighter future with actual games like DQXI, KH3, FFVIIr and presumably FFXVI. Hopefully Unreal Engine 4 can bring SE back to relevance.

Have you seen the last FF14 PLL? They'd love to talk about what they're doing but they've got PR dep standing just off camera pointing guns at their heads.

Ayep, the Square Enix marketing people remind me of a stereotypical mafia crew. They'll break your thumbs if you're loose lipped. XD

Still silly though, there's no point to having a pressor like this if you're not going to talk about the game. It'd be one thing if the game had just been announced, but this far along into things people want details.

Because it's really late to be doing stuff like that all of a sudden, for no reason. It's just bizarre.

Pre Gamescom

Final Fantasy Fans: Are we there yet?

Square Enix: Almost there. Just a little longer.

Gamescom

Square Enix: Just kidding. Thanks for buying the demo.

Nomura isn't without blame here either.

He clearly wasn't up to the task of getting Versus finished for whatever reasons. So they've had to try and salvage what they can out of whatever he put together. It's unlikely then that there was anything good that was salvageable out of his project for them to have to redesign and redo so many things.

Versus was cancelled people. This is FFXV, it's a completely different game. Hopefully people will start to understand this soon...

Uh... what? Are we living in different realities? The Versus project was morphed into XV. Hell, even the Versus logo shattered and became XV's in the 2013 re-reveal. How can you say that they are completely different?

Nobody is saying the projects are identical, but claiming they are completely different seems out of touch with reality.

You know this, I know this, for a very long time.

The problem is that they keep sending confusing signals about this. From the XIII Versus logo morphing into XV, alongside the whole "we are staying truth to the original game we swear!!...oh, btw, we changed the writers...oh and here's another redesigned character!!"

Tabata himself said that Versus XIII and XV are completely different games. He basically told everyone to forget what they knew about Versus XIII during one of the last ATRs.

Well we already had an entire thread of cringe with just some obscure statements about FF7R.

The difference there being, its a remake, so its not intended to begin with to be exactly 1:1 to begin with. Infact its more a reimagining of the core original concept. And Nomura has been very upfront with the fact from the beginning that he doesn't want it to be the same as long as the core concepts are kept.

On the other hand, we have Tabata for years saying that "everything was specifically preserved we're not changing anything, the vision and the story Nomura wanted is completely intact" to now, where its completely different. The worst part of this being that they didn't need any hold overs from Versus to begin with.

They could have just redone a completely different game. Change the characters, the story and everything without this weird mishmash of trying to halfheartedly appeal to the Versus people and the 15 people. Its worse because the game has officially been in dev for like 10 years

He is not without blame but Tabata and Square look bad as they keep lying about how the project is going. If is truly way off then they should have not say shit to begin with.

And the soft story rebbot in early 2014, basically it just has Nomura designs for the most part.

Thanks Kagari :)

It seems like he is at-least wearing a suit in that, so the Yakuza angle could still exist but who knows.

That's way too many layers to be a suit. The clothing on the arm appears to be very similar to the arm holding the sword in the video.

You know this, I know this, for a very long time.

The problem is that they keep sending confusing signals about this. From the XII Versus logo morphing into XV, alongside the whole "we are staying truth to the original game we swear!!...oh, btw, we changed the writers...oh and here's another redesigned character!!"

This is a theme with Japanese devs they can't communicate well. Part of it is just pr saying "You ain't cleared to say this" Which is why they cna't say who x is or if we will have Y villain sometimes. Before we go write this off wait til tgs or psx then see if it's a beat clearer. Although I would have loved them to make Sony and Microsoft go through their PR it would have been much cleaner.

I understand, but I still think the freak out is going to be even bigger with FF7R because of the huge fandom with that game.

Nah, if I remember right they said previously this demo would be available to every one for free.

Hmm, good, at least that.

And the soft story rebbot in early 2014, basically it just has Nomura designs for the most part.

Not for long, heh.

We'll never truly no the answer to this but my initial reaction is not to blame Nomura. The Versus team was taken off development of their game for both 13 and 14:ARR. The mess is bigger than Nomura. And I think Square knows that which is why we haven't seen a Konami vs Kojima scenario here.

Oh no doubt. As I said on the last page I have no freaking clue what Square is thinking by continuing to advertise, release demos, and tease this game when there's not even a sign of any kind of release window and all the chatter we here indicates a game that is nowhere near being complete.

I mean, Nintendo at least, when they need to delay and spend more time working on a game like Zelda U will shut up and not talk about it or tease it until they're ready to show it again with a more solid release date.

The character redesigns / hinted story changes are I believe in some part due to a move away from the "World of the Versus Epic" Nomura was once quoted as saying with hints at sequels.

I imagine some streamlining of what would otherwise be seeding elements through a series rather than completing a narrative in one game is a challenging one that results in such decisions. Imagine what you'd cut and keep to make the Xehanhort Saga in Kingdom Hearts span one game.

What is somewhat more disappointing is lack of seeing new areas or any concrete details worthy of building up to a trade event presentation. Even a fair slice of battles per beast for each ATR would probably go down better.

I'm completely uninterested in this game because of lack of female characters.

I really don't want a one gender rpg part.

Maybes be ok with it if it had a more interesting setting, but it doesn't.

Not to mention that's the "portrayed in the worst possible light" version of events. People love being miserable together. Most didn't watch the ATR, are just operating based on that (useful, far from objective) summary, and this thread is unfolding exactly as most want it to: a complete mess of panic, anger, and deflated hopes.

People are scapegoating Tabata, yet he's giving them exactly what they want deep down: an outlet for the mass production of angst that we have become programmed to love.

Objective summary, with no sarcastic remarks:

  • Confirmation they redesigned Regis. No reasons given, but they say they have one.
  • Airships are still being worked on, they don't work at high altitudes and may end up as DLC.
  • They can't announce a release window, but they say they do have one set.
  • They've shown the new trailer again, Tabata said the huge things aren't Summons.
  • The prologue of the game has been changed, they didn't say how much.
  • They say Luna is a strong female character who won't need the help of Noctis in fights.
  • The girl with black hair, featured among the main characters in promotional assets, hasn't been named yet.
  • Details on the main villain haven't been finalized, they can't share anything at the moment.
  • They read some story excerpts from the game's website while showing some concept art.
  • They're working on an official forum, which is not ready yet.
  • They showed a Malboro fighting Noctis, a fight that ends in a game over due to Bad Breath; also a brief stroll through some new landscapes (still Duscae).
  • They'll show the same trailer at PAX.
  • New stuff at TGS and working on a new demo.
  • Product placement for german beer.

It doesn't look much better to me, like at all.

I would love to see what this project looked like in say 2009 or 2010. The really worrying thing is that turning Versus 13 into XV basically seemed like something they had to since so much time had been put into the project.

So what about a Final Fantasy 16? I guess mainline FF games are going to be a once in a console generation thing now.

I think this is obvious. Square wouldn't have put Nomura in charge of VIIr otherwise. That's a pretty big responsibility.

But for how much longer? =P

Who knows :p

Honestly I agree with the poster above, proabably alot of changes to the story was to make this a singular experience.

With Tabata saying there will only be XV and Hasimoto saying me need to make more Final Fantasys and the general reception to the 13 trilogy (critically and sales).

I wouldn't be surprized if this happened.
