He said a main character still has no name, they're "considering" airship travel and can't still say anything about the rest of the things. It's nowhere near completion.
2017's generous. They still gotta lock down her final look(probably going to change sometime between now and next year), take a year to come up with her first name, then another year to come up with her surname.
Not surprising of course. Overdue game, believed dead, re-revealed and apparently revitalized, good information flow, then apparent demo-iteration wheel spinning but with the promise of starting the big push to release at GC .... then, a subtle character-driven trailer and a bunch of ATR non-answers.
Predictable recipe for starting up a hate train, and now social contagion has nearly everyone jumping on.
I'm not all doom and gloom like many here (and I actually liked the trailer and the gameplay shown quite a bit), but I do think the ATR was somewhat worrying. Even ignoring V-XIII, the game has been in redevelopment for a long time now, and this was supposed to be the beginning of the big ramp up. But they didn't give us any clear roadmap to completion. After so long, and following such a troubled development path, it's natural to feel a little pang. Are they really on track for 2016 as most reasonable people had believed? Is this all part of some byzantine corporate info-reveal plan that's progressing apace, or have they hit more development snags?
You're damn right, but you know, gaf loves dramas even when based on anything like this. They have changed the face of Regis? OH MY GOD !!!11!! TABATA BETRAYED ME AND I WILL HATE HIM FOREVER.
They replaced a character that I do not know anything but that I had idealized for years it based on nothing? DIE SQUARENIX, DIE !!!
This is the typical topic of Final Fantasy XV on Gaf plus the incredible revelations of some pseudo insider, of course.
Come on now. You've got your own flavor of 'dramatics' going on with this post.
Don't you think it's possible that visually people really liked the design for Regis that they've been seeing for years and aren't happy with his redesign? It has nothing to do with his personality, backstory, whatever. It could be a simple appreciation for the original design.
I agree that some of the "I'm done" comments (like in the FFVII:Re threads) are amazingly melodramatic, but there's still a legitimate reason some people might be worked up over the redesign.
Then you look towards the "why". Why change the design of what is bound to be a critical character in the story this (allegedly) deep into production? It could be as simple as "Tabata wanted a new design" or have some more complex elements that we don't know about. Regardless, it's worthy of speculation, IMO.
The negativity surrounding this game is making scrolling through it impossible.
I mean i can happily leave without reading 20 pages of "dis game is doomed" "scrap this and jump to xvi!" "no way this is coming in 2017"and whatnot.
I'll give you some points though: this ATR was a mistake, nothing but trash. Tabata and his team are doing a terrible job at PR/marketing campaign, it gives us nothing new to discuss and only injects negativity.
But
Is it a bad thing? Yes.
Does it automatically means the game will turn out shit, or is it something enough to lose faith in it entirely? Absolutely no.
Or maybe i'm the only one that doesn't rate a movie based on a badly cut trailer and other similar examples, because this is what it is.
Sure, they are making big mistakes, but is it enough to turn every discussion in an hyperbole of negative comments (of ehich mostly aren't even costructive ones but basically just shitposting)?
Clear example: during the Versus days and until now the idea of a controllable airship in a fully-scaled, seamless open-world game was pretty much given as dead and most were alright with it because the game was "ambitious". Now they tell us they're actually working on that and already have a working system which are looking into expanding, and people are completely shitting on them.
Some people are way too jaded on this whole project.
Again, i understand, but i don't want to follow my most awaited game amidst all this negativity
plus since Kagari worned us of SE's habit of spoiling things in trailers, i was considering media blackout
TBH, until this thread, most (post rebrand, but not all) FFXV threads have been fairly positive and overwhelmingly optimistic. The complete opposite of this thread.
I've already posted this here but it wasn't that long ago that this game was viewed in a pretty good light.
TL;DR, i don't think people are reacting negatively because they want to hate on FFXV, I think they are reacting negatively because this is a disaster.
he struggles for making a good combat system( played the demo and the the weapons auto switching is bad and Noctis struggles to actually land a hit on moving enemies alot annoyingly)
he struggles to make more than one playable character
I only played one of his games type 0, and I thought 70/100 metascore was too generous for it.
FFXIV ARR had to be that way because it was targeting PS3 and not-super-hightech PCs. FFXV has the luxury of reaching a little higher because it's not an MMO that needs to cater to some pretty shoddy PCs. Besides, you bitch about shaders, but that's only a part of what they can achieve by pushing the hardware. Stuff like bigger, seamless environments are only possible by pushing the hardware. I would be extremely disappointed if FFXV turned out like FFXIV. I don't think FFXIV is a particularly well designed RPG.
And FFIXV ARR was only possible because SQEX put everyone & their mothers to work on the game. In the meanwhile, they cancelled quite a few games and didn't really begin any new projects at the time. There's a reason why the 2012-2014 is so barren for SQEX and now that FFXIV ARR has been done for a couple of years, oh, look, suddenly SQEX has a pretty healthy number of games in development, for consoles as well.
I'd rather have Tabata & Co be given ~4 years with FFXV if that means all other console game development doesn't come to a screetching halt, like what happened with FFXIV ARR.
Bigger seamless environments are trash if there's nothing to do in them. GTA 3 will always be better than GTA 5 in my eyes because it was a dense small game world where you could learn every corner and each of them was unique.
Look at Duscae! It's an empty field full of nothing!
Look at Eorzea! Every single square inch is packed with things!
It should be common sense. I'll repeat myself: the issue is showing something to the public and giving them time to get attached to it. To "own" it in that sense. It should be obvious that if you then take it away from them, there will be some butthurt. Rightfully so. If you don't feel it, good for you. Help yourself to a medal.
Common sense to expect a vocal minority is complaining about something trivial? Sure but is it common sense to complain about trivial shit... I doubt it. People complaining about changed regis are the exception, not the rule.
I've been looking at some of the pages in this thread but didn't really feel like reading 30 pages to figure out why people are mad - is it just that after the demo that had most people optimistic, they're sort of stepping back to their old ways with things that make them look they're still in early development?
Yeah, GAF tends to be very negative about FFXV but this time, I can't really blame everyone here. They did say clearly that Gamescom was gonna be the place and time to start the big reveals like story info, release date, etc. Instead, we're getting nothing. Only talks of unfinished stuff, an extremely boring trailer, airship DLC and non-answers to important questions.
I'm one of the few that usually critizices Kagari for being negative but she might have been right. I'm very pissed at Tabata and his team myself now and my hype is almost gone. Thank God there are dozens of great JRPGs to look forward to in the future.
With this kind of info, i really do think that FF7r and KH3 are gonna be out before this game. They have so much stuff not even locked down and constantly changing its ridiculous. Everything seems a mess so far.
The story for this game has been kicking around for ten years now, yet they still haven't decided on a NAME for a character featured prominently in a trailer. How did we get here.
This is so disingenuous. Whats the point of reductionist bullshit like this?
A three minute trailer that showed several emotional aspects of the game and the detail at which it will be portrayed, a Q/A that answered questions regarding where development stands, or did u suddenly forget about how much you were complaining about airships? Game footage of gameplay that shows nearly 0 gameplay... That sentence makes no fucking sense.
Emotional aspects mean little if we barely know anything about the characters. Airship? Right, same answer as before, maybe it will be there, maybe not, maybe as freaking DLC?? Not a very satisfying answer if you ask me. What's so hard to understand about zero gameplay? Noctis immediately died soon after Marlboro appears. Barely any action, UI was off, run down a few slopes, hurray...
Common sense to expect a vocal minority is complaining about something trivial? Sure but is it common sense to complain about trivial shit... I doubt it. People complaining about changed regis are the exception, not the rule.
Neither of us has any hard data on how the fanbase feels, but from where I sit and the reactions I'm seeing on various forums and in the twitch comments, I think it's more than safe to say that of the fans who have been following this game closely over the years, a good chunk of them are not happy with the character design changes. Your glib dismissive opinion on the matter doesn't change the fact that it's a stupid move in terms of public relations.

I don't believe the negativity is completely unwarranted. Final Fantasy is the premier flagship AAA JRPG series exported from Japan, there are extremely high expectations riding on this title. Even the FF15 development team themselves have stated they chose to bring this title next gen in part to help the PS4 in the Japanese market. Square wants dedicated HD console gaming to be viable in Japan, and they want to revitalize their home turf's market with this game.
And then in the West you have a market that has not really paid attention to Final Fantasy since, arguably, the release of 10. Final Fantasy games used to be big fucking deals with huge launches. People want Final Fantasy back in the limelight and considering the condition of the Japanese market and the intense competition from other AAA western franchises this can be viewed as a make or break title for Square.
You have all this riding on the back of the beginning of an incredibly weak marketing push with non-answer after non-answer and people are understandably upset.
These are my sentiments below. Will be saving it for their shitty feedback forum.
1. Don't hide and then spin key story and characters changes as a positive light. The reason many people were excited for this game was because the original concepts, designs and trailers got them hooked. Suddenly u-turning on that probably isn't the best idea.
2. Skip one of the most viewed gaming events with E3 to show absolutely nothing a few months later after claiming the game will take "centre stage" at gamescon.
3. After 9 years of waiting; a feedback forum announcement, less than half assed live stream, conceptual art and stale trailer probably isn't going to do down that greatly with the fanbase, believe it or not. It actually looks quite unprofessional and incompetent.
Only show something if you have something worth showing (see other games, or even KH3) Don't copy FFXIV's approach, perhaps try and be original with how you handle this game. Today has achieved the reverse of what this set out to achieve and has turned existing fans off the game instead of making them happy and attracting a wider audience.
If Nomura can get that game out without SE inhouse power plays fucking things up, then i'd say he's pretty much immune to any criticism about his work ethic.

You left out the part about people waiting 10 years for this game. 10 years. They have the right to be upset. As one poster said, he was 15 when it was first announced. He's 25 now.
I really do think FF7's development will be much smoother. For one, it would be a braindead idea for them to use any engine other than UE4 and the rumoured (?) assistance of CC2 makes me think that they definitely have a solid development schedule in place. FF7 will be out in time for the 20th anniversary.
Like much of this since 2013, I assume she's changed a lot... but I find it strange to think that even back then she didn't have a name.
Was this just the CG modelers making random designs and whoever threw the trailer together for E3 2013 said "HER! PUT HER IN THERE!" without her being a real character yet? That's what it sounds like... but if that was back in 2013 and here we are in mid 2015 and she still doesn't even have a name? Yikes. :/
I mean, damn.... this image will be interesting to look at when the final game actually releases:
As far as I know, one character has been scrapped (Cor), one character has been scrapped and replaced (Stella for Luna), one character has been significantly redesigned (Regis), and one character at the least doesn't have a name and likely has changed appearances as well (Dark straight haired girl).
These are my sentiments below. Will be saving it for their shitty feedback forum.

I'm not saying people are hating on XV just to hate, just that they seem to only base their assumptions on bad PR decisions. And it is a fair thing, especially today, i just don't want to get intoxicated by the negativity.
It literally seems like that is the only real problem here.
If they had marketed the various changes better, i'm sure people would have accepted them more openly.
