Final Fantasy XV Gamescom Active Time Report - CNN reporting live from disaster scene

More than anything I'm pretty baffled they didn't announce a release year. I expected it.

Feels like they weren't really expecting people to ask questions. Doesn't seem like they had answered prepped for anything so they said nothing; perhaps out of fear of stepping on the marketing guys toes.

Not mad really, but it is somewhat odd. You'd think they'd have been a bit better prepared than this.

As far as I know, one character has been scrapped (Cor), one character has been scrapped and replaced (Stella for Luna), one character has been significantly redesigned (Regis), and one character at the least doesn't have a name and likely has changed appearances as well (Dark straight haired girl).

As far as we know Cor is still in the game.

I'm fine with the story/design changes honestly.

I am not fine with how marketing/PR are handling this game.

Stop promising stuff you can't deliver SE.

I think this whole disappointment is mainly because we were all expecting a huge media blowout.

Pretty much my thoughts, I don't really mind the changes but this first year long PR event wasen't the best

I'm not saying people are hating on XV just to hate, just that they seem to only base their assumptions on bad PR decisions. And it is a fair thing, especially today, i just don't want to get intoxicated by the negativity.

It literally seems like that is the only real problem here.
If they had marketed the various changes better, i'm sure people would have accepted them more openly.

To be fair, you're saying that "bad PR decisions" are what caused this? It's going on it's 10th year of development...they still have major plot and character decisions to make...not sure if Airships are in, etc. It seems like more than just poor marketing of the product.

yeah i don't sse it happing if disney has anything to say about kh3 if anthing ffxv -2017, kh3- 2016, ff7 2018

Did I miss some big news or something? Why does everyone think KH is so far along in development?

And I reallly doubt ff7 is in any sort of real development. Which team is making it anyway?

So yeah, I'll stick with 2017,2018, and 2020.

You left out the part about people waiting 10 years for this game. 10 years. They have the right to be upset. As one poster said, he was 15 when it was first announced. He's 25 now.

That was kind of the point of my phrasing: "overdue game, believed dead...." I.e., people had already been waiting a long time, then lost hope, then it was restored, now there's the fear it may be dashed again. From there stems my more moderate concerns as well.Give us a clear roadmap SE!

And I didn't say anyone doesn't "have the right to be upset." Obviously people have the right to be upset, just as I have the right to find the degree of upset a little bit hysterical.

This could be either a very bad work of the PR department or maybe the PR department is working with the little they have.

Looking at the trailer and this ATR, no PR department of a big company can fuck up this much on a major showing of their Stellar new entry of one of their biggest IP's.

Or rather, it makes more sense that the game is suffering major development troubles.

Not even a tentative year date kinda reinforces that.

Well there is the original Versus team. If they are not working on XVI, FF7remake is most likely handled by them.

Have you seen the last FF14 PLL? They'd love to talk about what they're doing but they've got PR dep standing just off camera pointing guns at their heads.

Thought I've seen others on this forum talking about Cor being out. :?
That would be a huge relief if he was still around. I love his design.

Pretty sure that's just hyperbolic pessimism. Unless I missed it there was no news about him.

Edit: possibly confounded by the announcement a while back that he'd be a guest character, not part of the main party?

the way it being handed right now and i don't think disney is going to be happy for 2018 release sine they are the one promting it plus nomura said we getting a kh game each year so if this year unchained then kh3 is next year

Squeenix confuse me so much these days.

On one hand they are littered with delays, staff changes, poor decision making, letting fans down (Tabata etc)

On the other, they have Yoshi P who must be the shining beacon of Square Enix of listening to their consumer.

Oh, and then we have a FFVII remake.

why are people getting mad about the Regis design. That's just how he looked 15 years ago. He will probably have the same style present day.

His past design is diffirent then the previous, but you are right in fact that his current day design from other trailers could still be intact.

Is there a summary of what happened? I wouldn't have entered this thread were it not for the thread title.

Reworked ATR summary:

  • We redesigned Regis. No reasons given.
  • Airships? We're behind and still working on it, maybe as DLC.
  • We're nowhere near done.
  • We can't announce a release window, even if we do have one.
  • Important questions about black bars and cosplay.
  • The prologue of the game has changed!
  • Luna is a strong female character even though nothing we've shown supports that.
  • The girl with black hair? We haven't named her yet.
  • Main baddie? Who knows.
  • Stay tuned for PAX when we'll show the same trailer.
  • Feedback forum! Not ready yet.
  • New stuff at TGS and working on a new demo.
  • Malboro fight with a bunch of seconds of gameplay and a brief stroll through some new landscapes.
  • Product placement for german beer.

.

He said that?? Hmm

And what's unchained?

Well there is the original Versus team. If they are not working on XVI, FF7remake is most likely handled by them.

Hm, any timeframe on when the versus team stopped working on versus? At the name change (well public announcement), or nomura leaving, or....

Cor was completely scrapped? The more I think on it the more it looks really bad to debut the return of a game thought to be in development hell with an all new trailer, then to have practically everything in that trailer either be changed or outright scrapped.

Regarding Regis, I don't actually dislike the new design at all. I'm more puzzled as to why it was changed when they had a perfectly good design already finished that had been shown off to people in that E3 trailer in 2013. Just seems like a waste of time really to do all that. Granted, maybe they changed it last year or maybe even in 2013 after that trailer had been shown. We didn't get another appearance by Regis in any of the material since then, right?

Why does GAF have a collective meltdown every time a publisher like SE fails at PR? Seriously. Hashimoto's "please be excited," the FFVII HS PS4 port announcement, this horrible ATR...never have I been able to understand the angst that follows these things.

As angry as people are at Tabata for doing a poor job at answering questions and leading a process that has resulted in a lot of changes, isn't it more appropriate to be angry at the fact that Versus XIII had such a shit development cycle in the first place? He's not the one that made promise after promise for the better part of a decade, while having literally nothing of substance to show for it. This isn't a FFXII situation. Versus XIII supposedly had a Dream Team working on it, but was never prioritized because XIII and XIV had so many issues that required extra attention, and whatever other reasons. I don't think we can say for sure it ever had a fully realized team in place. The "restructuring" it went through was essentially an entirely new team coming in, a shift in focus to a new generation of consoles, and a company shift in prioritization. Big changes should have been expected. This "does Tabata hate Nomura" talk is just ridiculous.

Like, Regis was redesigned? Maybe because the Regis character evolved as the game was actually put together, as the graphics were updated to fully take advantage of new consoles, and as the efforts of a new team slowly changed things to more reflect their own ideas and perspectives? Even throughout Nomura's reign, characters changed. And who knows if Regis was ever anything more than a CGI model and a vague prototype in-game model. Again, changes should be expected.

We know more about FFXV than we know about many other games people expect to hit in 2016, I personally was never convinced it would hit in 2016 in the first place, and the big complaint recently has been overexposure, not too little information. This ATR was a joke, but the mass panic is something else. My excitement for FFXV dipped dramatically some time ago, so I understand people heading in that direction, but man...

This is the point where I revert to my inner Square fanboy and blackout further news and discussion until the game is in my PS4.

When you take a moment to look back, it's shocking how long this has taken. Versus XIII was announced right at the end of 5th grade for me. I'm now about to start my senior year of college. That's just nuts.

Nothing terribly surprising there to be honest, so I don't get the backlash.

Yeah i'm not denying that there are problems, but sure as hell PR doesn't help.
It makes it seems like these changes and decisions to make are something they are doing now, when actually Stella was redesigned in 2013, who knows when this happened to Regis, and it's not like they have no clue about airships, they already have a working prototype and are only working on improving it.

These things would have made a much smaller impact if for example: they explained why they redesigned Stella and Regis in more detail and better assure us about the changes; had shown us something about Black Haired Girl (like "hey we're still deciding a name for her and other details but here is her full look"); or show us a glimpse of that bird-like airship mode.

Damn putting a classic milestone in an FF RPG behind a paywall would be insane. I can't believe that's even up for consideration.

To be honest, 'controllable airships' haven't been part of the Final Fantasy main series since the PS1-era, unfortunately. It would be awesome to have them, though- but not necessary.

We know there will be vehicles in XV. Cars and chocobos are in at the very least. Today Tabata confirmed they could technically pull off controllable airships at bird-flying level, but I understood that as a 'hovering' level, ala the ships that bring in the Magitek soldiers. Whether that actually happens or not is unconfirmed. All we know is it's still "in development". Famassu pointed out the logistical issues that could come with that. I believe that's exactly what Tabata and Co. are dealing with when they say they're still trying to make it work.

I took the DLC comment to point directly at the 'higher flying' airships, maybe as a way to traverse the map much faster?
Maybe with a New Game + you can move to regions/cities/continents faster with a high-flier? So it would be something that's not necessary, but might be an option for people via DLC?

I'm just spitballing here. :D

Not shocked at the hyperbole since this is some segment of gaf's soap opera. That said all devs have shit pr but on one hand I like that, can't trust my peers to see through good pr. They better fix up for tgs is all I'm saying. That or push 7 and KH.

why are people getting mad about the Regis design. That's just how he looked 15 years ago. He will probably have the same style present day.

That's also what I'm thinking. Looks like he just got back from some kind of war. Maybe 15 years later he will be more prim and proper like his old design. Now that he isn't fighting, he can wear a mafia suit and slick back his hair.

The original plot of Versus XIII involved Noctis defending the kingdom's crystal, and he how probably inherited this fate. Maybe the whole "A father could but hold him and and mourn his destiny" may be alluding to the fact that Noctis will have to continue what Regis has started. Who knows really, I understand the negative reaction to the trailer, but I thought it was neat. Very subtle.

If this is the new, and only, design of Regis, I don't mind. He looks more royal.

Also, this trailer brings back the whole "bonding" theme that Nomura was talking about when he first revealed FFVersusXIII.
