Final Fantasy XV Gamescom Active Time Report - CNN reporting live from disaster scene

Tabata throws some shade at multiplatform development:

The honest answer to that is that there’s obviously a difference in specifications between the two consoles. Maybe we haven’t fully grasped how to get the full potential of each of the consoles yet. We’re still working on that.

If we were gonna make it just for a single platform, and really optimize the game structure and the technology for the platform, it would be very possible to do that.

But because we have to work on that as a multiplatform game, I still can’t quite guarantee that we’ll definitely be able to make that on all platforms.

But certainly, from a technical perspective, we are already at a point where we can very much guarantee a thirty frames per second frame rate with constant and stable rate in the same way as in Duscae 2.0.

Source is Dualshockers.

PC 2 launch title confirmed.

The more he speaks, the more I am worried about this game.

I believe Nomura has said something similar. They can simply do more if they're able to optimize the performance for specific hardware instead of having to make sure it runs on multiple consoles. That's why Nomura has said that they aren't even thinking of any other versions of FF7, they're making and optimizing it for the PS4.

He shouldn't, actually, every company should be truly honest about performance but it seens it's not a big deal to them.

In this generation so far many games underperformed even though they promised otherwise.

These bullshit interviews are pissing me off. And it's not just about Tabata and FFXV, but other big games.

Well, I don't think you should expect that in a "open world" game.

No. When a director says to expect a stable thirty frames per second in his open world game, then he should keep his word.

Maybe he should set back his ambition? Don't clutter a cave with so many goblins, don't create such a big and detailed world unless you can have that consistent 30fps.

This game is already a clustered, over budget mess. The fact that the game is going to be rub similar to Duscae's 2.0 demo worries me.

Lol, yeah it sort of gives off the impression they're satisfied with 2.0's performance when we're still a year away, but I'm hoping and thinking he doesn't actually mean they'll stop trying to optimize even further.

Oh course they wouldn't stop optimizing, that process continues until the game ships.

Considering they're still developing the Luminous engine, it should not be unreasonable to expect further optimization from that front alone. Then's the game itself which can be optimized too. Too early for me to be worried about FPS anyway.

I thought the huge backslash that Ubisoft suffered last year would serve as an example for the other companies but that clearly didn't happened. Oh well.

I know, if he promised the constant 30fps he must keep his word, but then again, he said Duscae 2.0 is constant 30fps so what's this even mean? Guess he has other definition for the words "constant" and "stable".

To be honest, I wish Square would give up on trying to make their own engines. It's costed them an insane amount of money, and also been proven to be hard to develop with.

UE4 is the smart decision, and I am glad that FFVII:R will be coming out in a timely matter now that it's development will be hassle-free. :p

these are few shots from that DF video, and they are not even including hectic scenes that drop lower

Episode Duscae 2.0's framerate is nowhere near what you would call "constant 30fps" It was improvement from 1.0 but 1.0 was really shit to begin with.

Open world is not an excuse. Withcer 3 console version is constantly getting bashed with shitty framerate, and rightly so.

Agreed but too late for this game, they have to finish it now.

Plus usually the last step is final optimization, that usually where games see the biggest changes.

The Last of Us was unplayable in its stage until like the last two weeks of optimizations.

Wondering how this game will run over a year from release plus the history of final Fantasy games being fairly well optimized is one of the least fears of this game.

Oh, no kidding. I used to be very excited for XV, ever since 2007/2008.

Then I played duscae (the combat is awful and the technical issues) and read about the development and the ATE'S and etc...

I am not hyped. I will still buy, but its been sort of a disappointment for me. The combat simply isn't fun.

I am also very sick of these characters already. They're not bad, but I just want the game to release already so I can play it and get off this train lol.

I don't know how long they'd wait. lol But they know people will double dip so there it is.

Yep. I'm not having this game spoiled, even if that means I eventually spend $110 or so. I barely buy any games anyway, and most of them are sub $10, so I guess it'll even out.

Blame all those people who bought that shoddy FF13 port.

That's me :D! I specifically bought FF13 PC for the sole purpose of telling them I want FFXV on PC.

I only finished the train section, it was so bad. Mostly FF13, the port ran well enough for me barring the resolution.

Same.

I actually got to the end of the first place with the trains.

Same. No way this game is coming out in 2016. At least, I don't think so. We're supposedly getting the same trailer at 2 other conventions, and the ATR from yesterday really didn't make me confident on how the game is progressing.

I totally zoned out when he said that. Had to go back and see if it were real.

Just saying that if the game still looked like the PS3 version of Versus (which already had better than required graphics) the game would probably be running at 60FPS, with long range teleports, airships galore, and maybe even some playable summons ;)

But hey, at least now we can do timelapse videos of the lighting engine, right? That's definitely more important.

Either way, much like all of Tabata's other shady comments, I don't expect the game to have 30FPS at all. I also think it was total bs when he said they would be willing to sacrifice resolution for framerate... They are probably willing to sacrifice no more than the bare minimum to get the game running in an acceptable way (but still below average).

SE really has to learn from the past and stop making their own engine from this point onward. Great graphical fidelity is always welcomed, but if it halts development so goddamn much, I would rather they focus more on art style and various other things and shipping the game out.

That's too bad. I really like Duscae's combat, particularly in 2.0, and keeping in mind that there'll be more to the system in final release.

I don't think rpg combat ever demos super well though. It's so much about growth and progression.
