Final Fantasy XV SPOILER THREAD

I had no idea about Ifrit.

Wat

It's not really THAT important because we see Ardyn is the one spreading the disease ("You like the way I twisted the world?") and a lot of it's origins, spread mechanics, and chemical makeup are actually described in game.

But the lack of Astral background is disappointing, Ifrit supposedly turned against humanity and eradicated the Solheim Empire with the Starscourge 2000 years ago. We want to know why.

Is it bad that I felt more for the dream death of Pryna the dog then for all of the other side character deaths combined?
What happened to Pryna anyway?

I have a feeling this will be addressed in Ignis' DLC.

Why is it not important considering practically *everything* that happened in the game has its roots to the scourge? And it will give a much more needed context to the fight against Ifrit too! Like I said, as it is now, it seemed like Ifrit is just like he is Ardyn's lackey and just a random boss that you need to fight before fighting the big boss.

dont know man. royalty are always into weird stuff!

Lol.

I don't know why they shaved his mustache and beard tho, he looked way more badass with them than without.

I didn't know this game had a FFX-ish story

-------

On an unrelated note: I thought Cid was gonna take my busted up Regalia and give it the flying upgrade when I returned to the open world. *throws shoe at dev team*

I don't think it did. Or maybe it died when Luna died since it was obviously supposed to represent her. I have no idea.

I have no idea. People say that it died but I dunno. I don't think it is said in the game, it didn't happen in Kingsglaive or Brotherhood and if Pryna died because Luna died then Umbra should have as well as they were both her dogs/messengers.

noct's face also looks quite different from young vs old imo.

Like recasting someone in a movie sequel.

They really shouldn't have shaved him.

Who'd trust a king without good facial anyways.

Wait, Ifrit was the ultimate big bad? I had no idea.

Why would you cut such a basic piece of info? What was his motivation? "Humans bad!"?

Makes me wish SE would release English Ultimanias. Or, y'know, lock down a script before making a game.

Nah, Ardyn was for sure meant to be a tier above Ifrit. Just look at the way Ifrit is introduced, with Ardyn going up a set of stairs to wait for you, implying that he knows Ifrit will fall. Ifrit could have been summoned by Ardyn the same way Noctis is channeling the other Astrals.

What I mean was that in the context of the story they were telling, the final battle was between Noct and Ardyn. Ifrit's role was minor in that scenario, almost to the point of wondering why he was included there in the first place.

However, in the grand scheme of things, Ifrit clearly has significant importance to Eos. I again hope to see more of the Astrals in the DLCs, smartphone app (if that's still coming), and whatever else they have in store for the game.

I'm still amazed at how much charm this game has, something that was really missing from the franchise since the last numeric entries (Not counting Online).

Even very small, simple things like your friends wishing you a "good morning!" whenever you encounter them outside after resting. I won't deny it always brings a smile to my face.

The stop in Tenebrae is the most clearly incomplete portion of the game. It practically feels apologetic on the part of the designer as random NPCs trigger cutscenes that would have otherwise gone unused. Meanwhile you're watching the sky box go down in flames, an apt visual metaphor for the game's final chapters.

Anyone else legit bummed seeing Nyx hanging there right before facing Ardyn for the last time?

I was actually one of THOSE people who found Kingsglaive enjoyable, especially after the 2nd watch

Oh yeah, why wasn't the powerarmor from the movie in this :/

Haha yeah always loved that. It was like a minigame in itself trying to find where they were..!! (Least I made it into one. :P)

game is full of passion and is a huge mess.

'Beautiful mess' is probably the most apt description for this game lol.

Let's just hope XVI is a bit... smoother

Crap I forgot about that. Or how about the empire's giant machines that can level buildings? Hell, now that I think of it, the things we've fought of the empire amount to just Act 1 level.

They should've just saved the money spent on the movie and use it for more content for the game instead. Did the movie help FFXV's sales/marketing at all?

Put all the shit in the movie back into the game as cutscenes/playable scenarios, put back whatever they cut out for lack of time/budget, and there you have it - something worthy of FF's golden period.

from Tabata:
When we first sat down to re-plan the project that’s Final Fantasy XV, we really looked at which elements we need and should use and could do to create that kind of unique gameplay experience that we wouldn’t really get anywhere else. It was a very in-depth discussion about what elements to keep and what to throw away or change. We felt because the theme we’re trying to handle here with the story is such a massive epic tale, we really couldn’t fit all of that into the game that we had the time to make. So we wanted to show the essential things to get the best story across, which is where we decided on that—that’s reflected in the final form of the game.

It’s not that we don’t need to show the Niflheim invasion to get the story across, but because that episode is something that would take up so much effort and time that rather than force it into the game, we started up its own separate project independently, and that’s the tale we wanted to tell with the film. That’s why we moved that to Kingsglaive.

I'm hoping that whatever cutscenes they plan to patch in were partly done. The details on anything surrounding Ravus alone seems like alot of work. ugh

Beat the game a couple of days ago. Overall I really liked it, super ambitious game with some really good shit in it. I understand all of the plot and have watched the movie and anime so Im not missing out on anything crucial (although I guess having just learned the extent of Ifrits involvement would contradict that statement, haha). In my top 5 or so list for FF games. Great.

That being said, I think the game was too easy (first FF with no game over screen for me) and that OST was poorly used (most tracks I heard were the outpost song and the dungeon battle song, which are OK yet most of the brilliant songs are used once or twice). First FF I can remember without a memorable overworld song because the game would rather have you be in the car and listen to every other FF song instead.

Regarding the story and exposition, oh boy. This is long, sorry.

Kingsglaive, which I liked! I spent most of the movie thinking "so this shit is awesome and now I know I wont get to play it". It kills extremely pivotal characters that are not in the game at all or barely at all (Regis and Glauca) Im OK with Nyx not making it, but it felt like it took a chunk of content out of the game. Why was this movie made? To recoup costs? To expand the story? To have something else to sell? It explains and spoils the first act of the game, because you start the game knowing Noctis is wasting his time (not a good thing, it kills any sense of urgency) and raises questions that then the game doesn't explain (Noctis' accident as a kid, probably leftover from vsXIII) The worse thing though is that it establishes the empire as this big scary plot element just to have the game underwhelm in that regard.

Brotherhood was great and all of it should have been part of the game.

The game. I'm a big fan of Dark Souls so "less is more" storytelling is cool with me, but this wast not what was happening here. It seemed like they had so much half finished content that they had to find a way to stitch it together in a cohesive manner. The good news is that they did! The bad news is that it resulted in me not being emotionally invested in .. pretty much most of the events:

Insomnia falls? Don't care, I haven't been there as a payer and have made no connection to it nor its people. The movie introduces characters I would care about if they were in the game buuuut they were all killed. I'm TOLD to care (barely) but in a game you need more than just that.

Regis dies? The cast barely reacts to it, they keep their emotions in check. Realistic, yes, but if they dont seem to care, why should I? Hell, even his old party members seem to take it pretty well.

Revus? They dont make me hate him at all, he doesnt show up and beat me up, he just seems kind of jerky so when he redeems himself it doesnt make me feel much of anything. The game should make him feel like the big bad guy for the first 1/3 of the game.

The world in-game is not threatened by the empire. Everything is hunky dory, you hear about radio broadcasts sometimes, but it makes them feel like its happening a world away, not a couple of miles. After the movie I was ready to hate the empire and assumed they would push things to the next level but instead they were a minor annoyance that wiped themselves off the map offscreen sooo yeah, the supposed antagonist for 80% is kind of a joke. This is kind of weird because one of the main plot points of Kingsglaive is that outside of Insomnia everything sucks and thats why there are so many traitors, but then you play the game and the areas outside of Insomnia seem pretty OK!

Jared, yeah, you know. We all know the deal here. He dies and we are supposed to care more about his death than Regis for some reason but we have known him for 20 seconds. Dont care.

Luna's plight. I did not realize summoning the Gods was slowly killing her. In a passing conversation its mentioned that she must have it rough, but this is a game and you must see things and/or play them in order to feel someone elses plight, not just hearing some dialogue about a third person. I cared about her as a character thanks to the movie and, in part, the game but Noctis gets over her death in one chapter and moves on. Compare this with the death of Aerith which was huge deal, but in this game its little more than an annoyance.

I didnt see Ignis get hurt, so I dont care.

I dont know why Gladio left, so I didnt care, I also didnt know his father was Regis' bodyguard. Its glossed over a few times but not enough for it to really sink in during gameplay.

Prompto's reveal was a total wtf moment and not in a good way. Giant revelation just to open a locked door that could have been opened in many other ways. There WAS a great scene with Prompto on the roof of an inn. That was great! It fleshed him out and made me care about him, that was one of the ONLY scenes in the game like that! We needed about 3 or 4 of those per main character.

Noctis returns after 10 years aaaand the crowd goes mild. They seem happy but not too happy about it? They act like its been a week instead of, you know, ten years in which the world ended.

When Noctis tries to reveal that hes going to die, everyone just kind of assumes it and takes it in well, too well. Its done realistically but in a videogame you do want to have a bit more of a reaction and not have every party member react the same way. Too many things are left unsaid in this game. If it doesnt feel like a big deal to the characters, then why should it to the player?

The dungeons were actually really uninspired for a FF game. Cave, cave, cave, underwater cave, forest, mine. None of these had really cool features either, its just a forest, just a cave, just a mine. Gorgeous, yes, but creatively lacking. It doesnt feel as grandiose and, therefore, lessens my emotional investment.

Finally, the ending. Very short and what the game said would happen did happen which is ... very basic? Im not saying Noctis has to live, thats fine, but more stuff should happen. Actually a lot of the stuff about the chosen king and such in the game was really glossed over. Yes, Bahamut talks about it but does so once in a very hard to understand tone. The Starscourge and the chosen king needed to be be described and mentioned many times over in the game prior to that point. In old school rpgs you had all the info dumps as text so you could take your time and absorb the plot. Here its all said in sound bites that you hear once and even then its said in complex verbiage so its not easy for the info to sink in. These are great, epic moments that look and feel gorgeous but the complete lack of surprise baffled me. Its almost as if Noctis saying "Its finally over" its actually the developers saying how glad to finally finish this game.

I really want to play this game again after all the DLC, because the bones of the game and the story are great. It needs:

More insight into the empire, Ravus and the emperor and his motivations. More actual antagonists that you fight more than once to build an us vs them mentality. You fight MT's a lot but not the person behind them so it feels empty (haha, pun intended!) The biggest antagonist fight is against Areana and then next time you see her shes already an ally, almost by magic! Why are we not seeing any of this transpire?! Why are we only seeing the aftermath of the important shit instead of seeing and experiencing it?

More insight about my teammates. I didn't even know basic information about my bff's until I read about it online. Final Fantasy used to always be great about this! Such a shame. I know DLC will cover the gaps some, but this needed to be a core part of the game The firendship between the party was barely tested. If I had seen how Ignis got hurt I would feel responsible, if I saw how inadequate as a bodyguard Gladio felt after Ravus kicked his ass I could feel for him more. My party members spend 90% of the time making fun of me like we are lifelong friends and I as a player am just told that, but I dont get to know how in detail. You need both good and bad in order for a great friendship to feel real and in this game theres not nearly enough of the bad.

Make the Leviathan fight more eventful. Im not asking for something like the 2013 reveal but come on. The fight was padded because they didn't have enough going on before it. We need to see what the rest of the party is up to and a prolonged sequence dealing with the empire before reaching Leviathan (and not the 2 or 3 enemies we got, make it feel like a struggle to get to her)

The world needs more lore, what the fuck are these old legends and why do I have to hunt down Cosmology tomes in order to find out? These should be presented in a clear cut manner and presented in ways that enrich the experience. Tie it with the old kings when you get their glaives and get to know their history and exploits more through the dungeons instead of making them feel so disconnected.

Much more exposition about Ifrit and Shiva. Really make Ifrit the big threat you are dreading going against. Its fine to keep Ardyn as the "simpler" actual last fight (like Sephiroth was) but that means the previous fight needs to be built up much more.

Again, really a remarkable game. Insane production values, it feels like CGI most of the time! I know its hard to pick and choose all these loose parts to make a choesive, compelling narrative and they mostly succeeded, but they could have done a lot more with another 6 months of dev time to really enhance the experience. Hell, carry over Glauca from Kingsglaive and it would have been a huge improvement already.

still strange that for a game about 2 waring nations... 90% of the time you are hanging out in the middle of no where... which is kinda hard to really get a decent picture on wtf is going on.

Are there even humans in the Empire, i mean besides a few human generals and what not?

most 'empire' folks are just the zombie dudes.

oh yeah w/e happen to their king? That evil looking old dude that... was he even in this game or was it just a kingsglaive cutscene?

oh the warping dude in ch13 that trolls you?

I must have missed something lol. He was talking about something, but it sounded like normal evil nonsense.

Your friends also commented during the battle.

So if you don't turn on subtitles or was just really concentrating on the battle you might miss it.

And thus the fate of Emperor Iedolas Aldercapt of Niflheim.

Where is the most comprehensive explainer/conversation about the whole "who is Izunia" debate?

Playing this game reminds me of writing a paper in college. I'd have all these awesome ideas and put some of them down on paper. But I'd always run out of time, and end up rushing to finish it. The result was usually a jumbled mess with a few lucid paragraphs.

One thing that stands out however is that dialog in a Final Fantasy game has never been better than it is here. The localization team and the writing team took things to a new level completely. If only it was held together by something more. Also, the voice acting of the main characters was very well done. I thought Noctis' actor was asleep for most of the time, but I suppose that's Noctics' character until later chapters. He does a very good job inflecting emotion into Noctis' voice. Even though I'm not sure why Noctis is upset or in pain, the VA does a great job imparting it.

The campfire post-credit scene is probably my favorite story moment of the game. It's the emotional payoff we're longing for all game. Well done.

Amen.

The game was too ambitious for 2016, or they should've scaled down on the open world imo.

man the game really needs a codex or something that is consistently updated with current events, kinda like what Witcher 3 did.

Oh Noctis is just waiting for Iris/Cindy/Aranea/Regalia to die before he can upgrade and is getting some casual strange until then? That makes sense.

You kinda can make that a legit head-canon if you choose Noctis to bring a picture of Cindy/Iris/Aranea with him to the afterlife, lol.

No, it needs to be clear with the storytelling. I picked up on the Emperor part but it was by no means well done or obvious.

The game telegraphs characters as if they're important and then they get dropped after one or two scenes. That's just poor form.

Hell, XIII had a great (sometimes too great) codex.

I think that the whole "A Final Fantasy for new players and old fans" had an impact in how much story they gave you, maybe they thought info dumps would be a turnoff for new players?
