Final Fantasy XVI coming to PC 9.17.24

Finally got to the point where I can start the DLC. I originally played through the game on PS5 and did everything in the base game but by the time the DLCs were announced I decided I'd rather wait on the PC version and so never played them.
After skipping the cutscenes and dialogs to make the playthrough go faster now I'm finally ready to continue where I left off on PS5. The quality of life improvements like being able to go straight to the NPC at the end of quests saved me a lot of time.
Ironically I haven't had a single crash today.

I drop it to play D4 DLC but I expect I will finish it during holidays. Not my best purchase. It's flashy, nice soundtrack and all but I feel forced to play it so it's not for me I guess. I'm not too sure how much I have but I just got a quest for Blacksmith blues.

Even with the side quest stuff that apparently completely changes the pace of the game?

Made me hesitate a lot.

I like the bounty hunts against special monsters. The side missions don't bother me because after completing them you can immediately teleport back to the quest giver. I can understand the people being annoyed prior to them putting that feature in the game. This game also loads extremely fast on PC due to Direct Storage.

Played the demo of this the other day and almost instabought it after. Will wait a bit though as I don't really have the time at the moment but man... I've not touched Final Fantasy in eons (I think the last one I somewhat played was 12) and this seems astonishingly good.

I have heard it's rather linear though?

Someone told us that the demo "was the best to offer" and I quite agree with that. It's the same gameplay loop. It's linear but you have some zones to explore for side quests, they are rather small though. YMMV, I think it's either you really like it or just it's just "ok". Unfortunately, I'm in the latter. I would have rather keep that money for Metaphor but oh well, mistakes are made sometimes.

Fair enough. I think for me though the presentation really carried it. The soundtrack alone is worth the price of admission it seems. That, plus I think for a lapsed FF/JRPG player I reckon it'll be a good jumping off point to then try out stuff like Persona 5, SMTV and Metaphor (all of which I've never played before).

Just finished the first DLC and wow that was an awesome dungeon and boss. Can't wait to dive into the next DLC!

Just finished the game and I have to agree when people say the demo was the peak in the story and it all went down from there until it picked up a bit towards the end.

The combat and boss battles are great and probably one of the best I've played in a JRPG. Unfortunately the performance on PC was very poor and really soured my enjoyment of the game. Towards the end I just stopped doing side quests because I didn't want to back to the towns and deal with the constant stutters.

6/10. Would of been 8/10 with good performance.

Just finished the Rising Tides DLC and it was great. It was especially great at showcasing the graphics of FF16. It truly looks next gen and has some of the best graphics I've seen in a game when maxed out. I do think they need to tone down the difficulty of the last fight in the DLC though.

Agreed, the art direction and technicals in that DLC are top notch.

I wonder if they will evolve the engine and use it again for FFXVII, or if they'll use UE5.

Remember that huge tidalwave that was about to kill the village? It was frozen using magic.

Clive removes magic at the end that means the tidalwave insta unfreezes killing everyone in the village anyway.

i guess they will continue to use it for their next game. if the speculation that the engine are fork based on the one they use with FFXIV, then it mean they prefer engine with tools that they already familiar with foremost. lot of the devs come from years of FFXIV after all. if thats not the case then they could already use UE4/5 from very beginning and wont waste resource to invest on new engine.

in the end it depend on how it perform in their next few years. if it suck then they might consider other engine alternative. like how it happened with CD Projekt for example.

I'm about 9 hours in and this game is so damn good. I've heard some comments about the game getting worse as it goes on, so we'll see, but so far it's been everything I hoped it would be.

I'm happy you happy.....the next 60 hours will be very similar to the first 10 lol

Its not a bad game, but its dated and bland and offers very little in terms of any new design and even regresses in some areas.

In contrast I didnt enjoy the story in that DLC at all.

I didnt double dip on PC as I dont really feel like doing a second playthrough yet but maybe when its on sale.

Damn, people actually using mods to up the difficulty? Real commendable. I thought the enemies already were HP sponges during the highest difficulty.

Thinking of playing this next. 40€ on cdkeys. I just don’t want another FF game I start, play 15-20 hours then drop. Is this a game most of you are finishing?

I finished it but like others said; you get to see everything the game has to offer during the demo.

It's a really shallow experience overall.

Finished after 75 hours. It was peak cinema from start to end. It is one of the most spectacular games I have ever played, they went all in on this aspect.

The fact that this is not a JRPG proper did not bother me at all. This is a linear character action game that has the structure of a JRPG, and it must be played as such. People expecting a full blown open and vast JRPG, and trying to play it as such, will be disappointed for sure.

Sure, the combat is a bit too simple considering the run time, the basic moveset should have been more complex at least. Still, it's pretty fun. Changing skills often, even if suboptimal, can keep things fresh.

The boss fights are all around excellent and by far the best in the series.

The story is interesting, even if it treads familiar paths. What I really liked were (some of) the characters and the overall acting performance in English: the script is really great. The setting is pretty good too, it's carefully thought out and consistent.

The criticism about side quests is way overblown. This is standard JRPG fare. They go from filler quests to full blown questlines, providing some lore and character development. Could they be better? Yes, like every sidequest in every JRPG ever. Do they ruin the pacing of the main story? Yes, like every sidequest in every JRPG ever. If you don't like them they can be skipped, like every sidequest in every JRPG ever. Whatever...

For me, the only real big downside is the default jogging speed, if I hadn't modded a sprint button in I would have gone insane. I feel for the console players.

So, in general, I had a pretty good time. Now let's hope FF7 Rebirth comes out on PC soon, so we can play that one too...
 
Finished the game recently. Loved the game. It has some upsides and lots of downsides but overall I loved it while playing it. Especially the English voice acting was spectacular. Eikon fights were so much fun. Gameplay was nothing fancy but that doesn't mean bad. The overall story was so so much better than FF15 and was so much better presented than FF15 as well. This is what FF game should do. And I see that this game used lots of FF15 data in itself while preparing the story.

But the ending man. What the hell? I definitely won't spoil it here but we needed more than that ending. Not nearly enough! I really hope they bring out 16-2 or something but I know that it is a fat chance. That is why I'm kinda angry.

Maybe. Maybe it was really Joshua because Clive healed him in the end. We don't know what happened to Joshua afterwards. Or Clive for that matter after the beach. That's why we need something concrete here.

But I don't think we'll get a sequel.

My interpretation is that

It's Joshua. Clive died and gave his remaining life-force to Joshua.

Take and build upon 16s story presentation and couple that with Rebirth's party mechanics, maps/word traversal and side content and I think they will have the perfect modern FF.

We'll never get a 16-2 but at some point down the line probably a few years at least they could do a follow-up novel or we may get dev commentary where they reveal the canon post game conclusion. Until then we'll never truly know!

We saw Clive on the beach with his hand destroyed. Joshua no where in sight. Clive barely escaped that sinking alien ship himself let alone dragging a dead body. In the side mission the scholar old man told Clive that he should write a book. Clive took on Cid's name to honor his legacy. He obviously did the same thing again for his brother. The biggest giveaway of them all though is that Clive is the one narrating the story.

Regarding the ending.

It's a very common trope throughout all of storytelling that if a character's "death" isn't visually shown, then he's not dead. Writers do this to not trap themselves in a corner in order to reveal they survived at a later time. In the case of FFXVI, the developers would do something like this to leave the doors open if the game was hugely successful and the possibility of a sequel was on the table. In the ending we see Clive's hand start to turn, and then we see him at a distance either pass out from exhaustion or "die". It's not definitive. Furthermore I think the biggest implication that Clive wrote that book is when Harpocrates gave him that pen, and Clive mentioned that he may one day write something. Clive is the narrator of the game. The words "and thus did our journey end" was uttered by Clive in his narration. The final trophy of the game has an icon of a book and it's called "The Chronicler" with the subtext "and thus did our journey end". All of this heavily implicants Clive is the writer and did survive.

That demo had a lot of beautiful but uninteresting cutscenes. FF13 was more interesting in the beginning than this.

FF10/13 team all lives in on the 7 Remake team.

But I rate the cutscenes in 16. Some of the highs are the best I've seen in a game around the mid point.
 
By the way last night I had the most trivial thought. Bear with me for a moment:

As you know FF10 had a sequel. And three games later FF13 had got sequel (and 2 of them in fact). And now we are again three games later with FF16 and maybe here we'll get a sequel :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Actually I'm half joking with these trivial thoughts (because knowing Square Enix, it is hard to get a sequel) but it'd be interesting to continue the story after that uncertain ending.
