It's a bit amusing seeing people blissfully happy over these amazing new features that have been in Opera for quite some time... Anyway, is this less slow and clunky than the beta (from a few months ago)? It pretty much drove me crazy when I tried it. Also, do you still have to restart the browser when installing extensions? I'm always ready to try different browsers, but issues like that I just won't deal with.
it is better than the beta, noticeably better, and yes you still have to restart.

For those with blurry text issues on Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can try enabling or disabling DirectWrite. Type about:config in the address bar and then type "directwrite" into the filter bar and you should see some settings you can toggle. "gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.enabled" is what you want to toggle to enable/disable DirectWrite. You should probably just try using the ClearType tuner in Windows if you find the text weird looking with DirectWrite enabled or you can load up this page using IE...

Also, FF4 is capable of installing add-ons without having to restart but it is up to the add-on maker to support this feature.

Does FF normally require a restart after installing an extension?

Normally yes. But that's for more advanced extensions.

Also I am not sure about people saying it hogs ram. After having it continuously open for several hours, with 5-15 tabs always up its currently using 350MB out of my 4gb of ram.

Any way to get the Awesome Bar back to 3.6 style? I like to type the first letter of a web address and have the most-visited site with that letter appear first.

How has it been changed then? I don't notice any differences in the way the awesome bar functions.

Also, when you set the icons to "small", the browser UI takes less space than Chrome. That's a first.

Do you have any extensions installed that might mess with awesome bar? It should work just as you described it. If I type n, NeoGAF always shows up as my first result.

I like it. I forgot how good live bookmarks were.

However, is there a way to make the tabs behave like in Chrome? I like the fact that Chrome keeps the tabs the same size when closing multiple tabs quickly. This way the X will always stay underneath the cursor. FF's changes tab sizes, having me to move the cursor every time I want to close a new tab.

A little weird having the tabs above the toolbar but I'll get used to it.

Right click on any of the buttons in the tab bar or navigation bar (besides back/forward) and you should see a toggle for "Tabs on Top". You can also find this by clicking on the Firefox button and looking in the options submenu.

This. Anyone?

Ahh cool. Thanks.

You should probably try out some other things first like I mentioned in a post above. Turning off hardware acceleration will cause you to take a hit on the browser's speed.

Most people I know just use Download Statusbar. I can't remember the last time I actually opened the download window.
I used to have that add-on for years, but somehow I've come to dislike how the downloads are always in your view. I like a tab more. It's a nice add-on though.

Recommended add-on for the customization freaks: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/status-4-evar/

That status bar was removed in Firefox 4.0. While some of the status bar items did find new homes, some did not, and you might not like where they ended up. There were also some nice innovations during the development of Firefox 4.0, such as progress/links/status in the location bar, which unfortunately didn't make it to the final release.

Status-4-Evar aims to bring back (some of) the old status bar items, give you more control over the built-in Firefox features, and provide new alternatives.

The extension provides "Status Text", "Progress Meter", and "Download Status" items. These toolbar items can be moved wherever you want by customizing the toolbars. Behavior of the toolbar items, and other additional settings, can be controlled in the extension preferences.

This extension can also act as a replacement for the Fission extension. There are preferences to show links, status, and progress in the location bar instead of the toolbar items.

Even though I'm all for using as few extensions as possible, since they are largely responsible for the "too much memory" complaints among other issues.

Switched to Chrome a week ago. Let's see if Firefox is able to win me back again.
I switched a while ago. Even on my new Sandy Bridge PC Chrome runs faster than FF4. I left it installed as an alternative but I'm sticking with Chrome.

There's probably an add-on that can do this for you but rather than clicking the x to close tabs, you could just use ctrl+w to close tabs.

There probably is, but they could have added that. It's kind of annoying. Nice shortcut anyways, thanks.

Btw, I just downloaded an extension and I didn't need to restart the browser. I had to do this with every beta or RC. Is it just a coincidence because the extension is really small, or did reboots become unnecessary in the final release?
It is a new feature: extensions can be installed without restart. It is up to the developer of the extension. However, they are more limited when restatless and some add-ons can't be built around that just yet.

Question: Is there a way for the default download manager or this addon not to show images? Like I don't want for images to be saved like regular files in the download manager; just like when you save images in IE.

You can also middle-click anywhere on a tab to close it. You may still run into the problem doing it this way but you don't have to be as precise and click on a little x. I remember reading somewhere that they've considered addressing this, but I don't know if they ever made a decision on it.

Maybe in Firefox 5. They should start thinking about tab-whores like us!

nice. Always been a FF user (until Chrome gets a real adblock, actually blocking not hiding)

wat happened to Save tabs before quitting option?

I have the version 3.6.15... can I upgrade from this version to 4 keeping all my stuff? or should I backup my bookmarks and shit and then import it?

If you use the default home page, there will be a button that says restore previous session. You can also find this in the Firefox menu under History. If you always want to restore your previous session, you can just go to options and change the "When Firefox starts" option under Startup to "Show my windows and tabs from last time".

Hmm, I checked how much RAM my FF used just now: 600 MB for 54 open tabs (with webpages loaded in every tab)
My installation is the blessed one.

EDIT: I know I should probably load the same pages in Chrome just to compare, but it's 54 tabs and I'm lazy.

Bookmarks root menu is screwed up for me. I can't re-arrange anything, they all just shoot up to the top when I attempt to re-arrange them.

You can configure it to not show files based on extension (jpg, gif, and so on) or automatically clear x seconds after it completes based on file extension.

i'm curious as to what it looks like on the mac. I guess theres no need for that little orange firefox menu thing?

Nope not there for me, but the bookmarks menu is totally ruined since it is as wide as the widest book mark title, any way to set it to a fixed width?

You mean the addon? or the default manager?
