Firewatch's PS4 performance is terrible

Agreed. People have to put the shoe on the other foot sometimes, and drop the always, "us vs. them" mentality that seems to plague gaming when it comes to gamers vs. devs.

Not saying anyone in here specifically is in that mindset, but ever since the dawn of the internet, and dev interaction, I noticed the last 20 years of "us vs. them" starting to develop amongst some people, where anything a developer says that can be genuine, seems to be taken with, "they are out to get us, or the like" mentality.

Seemed like a genuine response to me.

This.

I played about 30 minutes of the PS4 version. It's fine. It's not great and I'm glad I bought it on PC, but the frame rate isn't even close to something like Until Dawn (literally unplayable IMO).

lol,ok I am getting it today because I played Until Dawn,it's in my top 5 of last year and had no,zero, nada problems with the framerate...thanks ;)

Playing until dawn right now and the framerate is sure a mess but saying it is unplayable is a huge stretch, given the minimum of interactions you do. And those interactions could also work with 10fps because it is more of a playable adventure than everything else.

Yeah, I was bummed about PS4 performance at first, to the point that I wanted to stop playing and wait for a patch. I ended up playing it anyway since I was desperate and tried to ignore the bad framerate and hitching. It's not so bad when you just accept it. I'll end up playing it again after the patch hits to see the other dialog options.

This game is worth playing even with the issues. Can't wait to play a better version of this though!

This kind of comment seems to undermine the fact that not everyone is after a higher frame-rate for faster input response. Honestly, for my tastes, it's more about how it LOOKS than how it plays. I can deal with mild input lag but an unstable frame-rate is an assault on the eyes.

yeah unstable framerate is for me like someone holding a piece of paper in front of the screen. it's just very distracting. my mind can't focus on anything else anymore.

Played a couple of hours and cant believe how hyperbolic NeoGAF is once again.
Yes, there are a couple of pop-ins, but its insane how exaggerating you guys are.

Edit: Now Until Dawn is playable? Seriously? 😂

I don't think it can be boiled down to people exaggerating. Although, maybe we have a few trolls here and there.

I think it's more along the lines of frame rate really bothers some people, and other people don't even notice it. Something that doesn't even register on your radar can utterly ruin a game for another person.

I for one hardly ever notice frame rate problems, and therefore usually stop reading anytime I see someone mention them.

It's all just opinion bro.

I beat it on PS4 and thought people were exaggerating. The experience was fantastic and I loved every second of the game. Yes there was some frame dropping but I can't say it ever bothered me much. Game never crashed once and no other bugs.

I'm usually on this end. Any time I hear the word frame pacing when people discuss bloodborne my eyes basically roll out of my head. Some people are just really sensitive to things. I feel the same about people who get nauseous from FoV settings in games lol. Just makes me giggle.

Unstable, frame skipping or super low framerates give me nasty headaches after an hour or so.

Playing Ocarina of Time on the N64 at 20 FPS literally causes me pain.

Watch me be accused of hyperbole when I say this topic is pretty important to me...

You have actually a point to complain, but its not like
Everyone gets a headache of stuff like this.
Still, most people acted like this game is unplayable, bug filled crap and thats just not the case.

Have they said anything about patching in some more control options? The right stick 'acceleration' and the slow vertical movement is kind of weird.

I have a friend just like you, so no, your not being hyperbolic. He used to get headaches when switching from 30-60 fps also. Switching from Toca 3 to PGR 2 was always a process for him.

Firewatch is playable. Certainly not unplayable. If it was, you wouldn't be able to finish it. But the framerate is a mess overall, that's a fact. I also believe I had one freeze during my playthrough, not completely sure as it was still on the loading screen and was taking a really long time to load. So, I just reloaded my save but didn't have to backtrack too much.

I'm usually very, very not bothered by performance hitches but even I noticed this one. Unfortunately, it's the kind of game - as much as I enjoyed it - that I'm really never gonna play again, so I'm not too bothered if they patch it or not. Additionally, this kind of the game is probably, behind only maybe turn based games, ones where performance is as unimportant as it's possible to be, yet I still found it annoying.

Loving the game.. On day 77 and hit a major bug

Zone are missing and I'm falling through the world.

After several attempts I'm able to cross zones only to find myself stuck inside rocks unable to touch the ground..

Why,oh why is the save system set to auto save with only one file??? Make an auto save slot and let us have our manual save slot to avoid game breaking stuff like this. I've lost all my progress now.

Nausea is indeed hilarious.

Reading about people for whom playing games can trigger seizures must leave you rolling around with laughter.

I'm fine with the stuttering. But it didn't affect my personal experience to much -- I do wish the "Day x" transitions didn't double as loading screens, messed with the pacing a bit for my tastes, they were pretty perfect at being deliberatly jarring, and sitting at them for longer than 4 or 5 seconds seemed to diminish their effect. Other than that, I had to restart the game after it ft locked up on one of these loads -- not a hard crash, I could still jump out to the menu and close the application. Despite this Firewatch is an experience I'll treasure, and I'd recommend to anyone.

I'd really love a list of those. I've played dozens upon dozens of Unity games, and all of the large-scale ones have some issues.

The only ones which are somewhat large-scale and mostly free of issues that I can think of off-hand are Ori and Assault Android Cactus. The former is 2D, the latter has very limited environments, and both had their developers spend a very considerable amount of time tuning for smooth performance.

Yes, no engine is perfect, but I can't say I've noticed as endemic an intermittent stuttering problem in any other widely used engine as I have in Unity.

I'm not sensitive to bad frame rates or to frame rate dips in general - I've played through entire games without even noticing issues that lots of other people claim are deal-breakers for them.

But Firewatch's PS4 performance was bad enough to make me put the game down until a patch.

It's VERY choppy any time you move the camera. It significantly distracts and detracts.

The ignorance is astounding.

Yeah the frame rate dies at times, but it is not unplayable.
never had any bugs or crashes, not saying they are not there just I did not have them aside from framerate just dropping for no reason.
Brilliant game.

o shit. was it you that caused buddy to have his public meltdown on his company GAF account? are you the one leading GAF astray!?

what i'm curious about is how this wasn't noted in any of the reviews of the game i've read. hard crashes, as common as they're being reported in here seem to be the kind of thing that i'd want to know about when looking into a game. luckily, i'll be a pc buyer which, as far as i know, hasn't had any serious issues reported so far.

Same. I was perfectly ok with Until Dawn, enjoyed every moment of the game. But Firewatch is just unplayable for me. That camera acceleration kills it. It just destroys my immersion totally. Had to stop and wait for the patch.

Haven't read many of the reviews but performance issues have been talked about in several podcasts. It could also just be for the reviews they got given PC copies.

Hopefully you guys get a nice performance update and get to enjoy this game fully. First game I've completed in 2016 and it has starting things off on an excellent note for me; it's a really well thought out game and you can tell a lot of love was put into it.

Link?

I honestly never had a problem with Until Dawn, maybe it was patched by the time I played it. Either way, I guess it shows just how subjective terms like "unplayable" really are given it all revolves around personal tolerances. Bugs and screen tearing take me out of an experience far more than the frame rate.

Ah, so it isn't just me!

I'm really struggling to play it, I just can't move without seemingly getting stuck in the terrain with each step.

I made a vid, showing the issue I'm having: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26r2Ni0yPlU

Patch plz.
I had this when my left stick was dying. Destiny was exactly like that, other games were ok. You might want to test it with another DS4.

I'm using a fairly new DS4, lightly used, and it performs fine in all other games...

Just finished it. There was definitely some stuttering, especially considering I was playing most of the game running at full speed. But it didn't impact the gameplay at all, because it's not an action game. So overall I wasn't at all bothered by it. If you are, I'd say just walk a bit slower across parts with wide views. People who complain that it's unplayable... I dunno maybe they only played three games in their life.

Leaving aside Firewatch framerate issues we still have graphical glitches, crashes, lockups and progress/save corrupting. Oh yes completely playable.

It depends on the game. I am used to play with 144hz on my pc and I love smooth gameplay. Its just that it is somewhat ok for Until Dawn.

But like I said, my DS4 worked well in every other game, only Destiny was causing trouble. It has something to do with the game's sensitivity settings or input. Just test it out if you can.

My trapped in the terrain issue isn't like that.

Basically.. At Cottonwood Grove/Big Tree where you're supposed to go to make a report, there's a spot where the previous zone meets that zone. If it doesn't load you only see the CG side of things. Sometimes you can trick it and see the zone load with stuff missing (rivers, streams) so in theory as long as you don't walk on the river spots that are empty you could walk.

Except I crossed the zone on a hill/mountain which I'm guessing may not have been stitched together well. The first time I fell through the map. The next I crossed but was stuck in the rock. I could climb anywhere a rock was and fast. But could never leave the rock for solid ground.

I'm able to access areas that are locked like the brush covering the stream.

I had no real stuttering issues but this one is a major bug.

Yeah it's very hilarious I cannot play first person games without getting sick within 5 minutes if I cannot adjust the FOV.

Your ignorance and lack of empathy is what's hilarious over here.
