First Mario 128 info?

If Zelda is going LotR style, wouldn't that incline a more 'mature' game, not only in graphics, but maybe it'll have a darker story, perhaps characters will die, maybe a bit of blood as well? Or maybe we can see Zelda in a hot archer outfit fighting alongside Link.

And who wants to bet the subtitle of the next Zelda will contain the word 'ring' in it? LoZ: Ring of Corruption. Oo, borderline Castlevania cheesiness. :p

i think you guys are taking his comment a little too literally. I doubt very much that he means they are literally trying to make Zelda be more like LotR. I think its more of a general statement, saying they are trying to make it "mainstream" fantasy like the Lord of the Rings movies turned out to be. Afterall, they already took the first step by making a "realistic, mature" style, no?

New development team and new director working on the project. Been in development for several years. Biggest change will be the camera system.

Yuji Naka is directing and he's using the 3D Sonic camera. :(

:lol

Big unrevealed GBA game? Hmmm...that seems like a really, really odd thing to come out of NST at the moment. You'd think that they'd develop another DS title by now. But, really, the same could be said of Camelot, who are still working on Mario Tennis GBA.

Thanks for the info; the Mario 128 stuff is too cryptic, but I'm excited for it without hints anyways. Should be interesting to see Nintendo counter Microsoft's system launch with a Zelda/Mario combo. That's a little unprecedented. If they're revealing it at E3, I have to assume it will launch at least next Spring, and that seems too late.

Releasing this on GameCube still makes little sense, but alas.

isn't NST horribly undertalented? What have they worked on? I can't think of anyhting besides B-Nintendo titles.

Saying a game doesn't exist is impossible. Especially at Nintendo. Where games exist but are never released.

Sorry buddy, we've been hearing about Mario 128 for what, 4-5 years? For how long has Miyamoto been spoonfeeding us bullshit? I'll believe it when I see it.

Also, SMS has the best camera in a platformmer yet. Complete freedom is the best option, a change from that would be *bad*.

I think they are getting better. Mario vs. Donkey Kong was good, if still a second-rate Nintendo title, and I think Metroid Prime: Hunters is promising. But who knows...

Wave Race: Blue Storm and 1080 Avalanche are awesome games, they worked on Mario vs Donkey Kong too, which is supposedly good but I haven't played that.

They're the ones who worked on the Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt demo and I'm assuming the full game also.

NST's contributions to Nintendo's library of games are mixed. They've outputted some great content, and some true stinkers, and plenty that lies middle of the road.

Honestly, I find them overall disappointing by Nintendo's high standards, but they're not a terrible bunch, imho.

"Selling out" really smatters the whole affair with a negative gloss though, doesn't it? If what you're saying is that Nintendo is going to give us a great value, with great production, and more accesible aesthetics, then I would say that things are just as they should have been all along.

NST rocks IMO.

That's just me. Plenty of haters on this board. But for the record, the NST team has changed alot every year. I can tell you some guys from EA, EAD, and Angel Studios work there now.

GBA title = Punch-Out?!

And the main 2 camera changes this gen were RE4 and Metroid Prime so they've got a good record for not screwing things up.

I wonder with the hints of big battles from the Zotr video, will we see link have help in the form of an rpg style party.

WHY ISNT IT E3 YET !!!

Never forget.

NEVER EVER UNTIL NST BURNS DOWN TO A CRISP

Selling out: I believe the whole point is Nintendo is appealing Mario and Zelda to the mainstream. Making Zelda as LOTR as possible and Mario as nostalgic as possible. No more quirky stuff that hurt Nintendo's pocket.

This is a very good thing.

I disagree with this. Complete freedom certainly *sounds* like it's the best, just as a game like GTA:SA, full of freedom, *sounds* very good. But for pre-fab entertainment, it's definitely not the case. If a camera does everything it's supposed to (that is a big if but still a very fulfillable one) then I rather not spend time controlling it when I could be having fun with the game.

I have this whole theory that the only reason we take advantage of the full-freedom camera of SMS is to transition a full 3D game into short 2D actions, but I'm sure that will sound like a bunch of craziness here.

What can I say besides that I never had a problem controlling SMS's camera, it felt like second nature to me. The only time it gave me trouble was when it tried to re-adjust itself in a couple of areas. :P

What was wrong with the Crystalis port again? I beat the NES version when I was a wee tyke, and I bought the GBC port that NST handled, but admittedly, I've barely touched the GBC game.

Let's see. They replaced all of the music with some internally produced shit, for starters. The motherfreaking CLASSIC intro was scrapped and again replaced with some internally produced shit. I think I said enough.

It doesn't deserve to have that title.

You are your NST love have no place here! Begone!

...in all seriousness, I'm a big fan of Wave Race: Blue Storm. It's not perfect, but damnit if I didn't have fun with it as a launch title anyways. I don't understand the hate of the company, although I have no connection to Crystalis and may not see the big issue at hand there.

A team changing alot every year isn't usually a good thing, is it?

I guess this solidifies the claim that Mario 128 will indeed be on the cube.
You're right. When Miyamoto said it you couldn't be sure, but now that Shikamaru's unnamed friend said it, it's set in stone.

A few core programmers and artists are still there. Several directors left to either go back to teaching at Digipen, Microsoft, or small game companies.

Oh, yeah, it was definitely very intuitive and easy to use, but I'm just saying to me it's just a "responsibility" or a "duty" that has to be taken care of so you can actually play the game.

If I could concentrate on timing wicked jumps off enemies and breezing through levels, ducking under and running over the right platforms, I would take it over any game that gave me complete freedom of the camera.

I think Nintendo realizes this, which is why they made the change with the new Zelda camera and, possibly, with the new Mario. That's good progress, in my opinion.

Wise move. If they don't appeal to the mainstream, their console business would fizzle out very soon.

If I was Nintendo, I would also ensure that Pokemon is a launch title for Revolution and/or Evolution.

there's no accounting for taste. :) WRBS + 1080 were both weaker sequels to their N64 prequels. The visuals were also VERY LACKING. As for MarioVSDK.. its good but the visuals are piss poor (horrible prerendered stuff)

Nintendo is doing what it has to do. Zelda is supposed to be a mammoth franchise, and as business men, the company has a job to make it appeal to everyone at GAF and everyone who doesn't visit GAF. Wind Waker did not get the job done..

and I just want to remind people of this and LOTR LOZ

So... Mario 128 media in 2-3 months? Fucking sweet! If it's for GameCube I'll be so pumped since I don't plan on buying any next-gen platforms anywhere near launch.

And a new GBA title from NST? Awesome as well! I haven't played all their stuff, but I love the likes of Bionic Commando: Elite Forces, Wave Race: Blue Storm (still in my top 3 GC titles) and Mario vs Donkey Kong, even 1080: Avalanche, although less so.

Zelda shouldn't be like LOTR... It should be like Zelda. Miyamoto was able to create a fantasty world far enough away from Tolkien and a world recognizable on its own.

I can't wait to see Mario. I hope Nintendo Tokyo is the new dev team. They did wonders with Donkey Kong.

Zelda can be like Lotter and still be like Zelda. And who are we kidding anyway? Zelda springs from that godawful Ridley Scott movie which (I assure you) springs from Lord of the Rings anyway. Tolkien's work is like 'The Emerils Essence' of the fantasy genre and no dish goes without a nice peppering.

Zelda came way before that GODAWFUL RIDLEY SCOTT MOVIE. ?! WHAT THE?!!

:lol @ hitman. I think its great news that Nintendo is focuing on the camera work for a better Mario experience. They're one of the best houses out there with regards to ingame camera

SMS = near perfect
LOZ = perfect

I believe I read somewhere that the Tom Cruise movie 'Legend' is Miyamoto's inspiration for Legend of Zelda.

Edit: Ah, that's the Ridley Scott movie people are referring to.

If this means 128 is for Gamecube, aren't they setting themselves up for disaster with Revolution? How can they have this new, fantastic "oldschool-style" Mario game come out in the next 18 months AND have a new Mario ready for the Rev's launch?

Mark my words: First Person View Mario.
end of the world... mark my words.

I'm thinking more along the lines of 2.5D, where the gameplay is essentially 2D mechanics with 3D graphics. If ninja's information is reliable this time, this quote is my main reason for thinking along those lines.

Well if you ever talk to NST, tell them to stay away from the Ridge Racer property because they suck at it. Also tell them to never touch 1080 again, because their last title in that franchise effectively killed it for good. Also feel free to inform them that Blue Storm was nice, but it was like a lame duck improvement over the original. While you're still having this conversation, tell them that what they did to Crystalis is a damn shame.

Oh and compliment them for Mario vs. Donkey Kong. That's about it.

NST did an awesome job on Bluestorm, the water physics alone made it a more challenging and more fun ride than wave race 64.

The one negative i find with most nst offerings, is that they seem to lack a certain style punch and end up feeling mundane visually.

1080 lookes so ridiculously N64 that all I have to say... NST suck. Especially when you have Amped + SSX to compare this ugly sack of shit to. The stills are still alright.. in motion.. there is just no comparision. Nintendo should have let them all go and hired new/eager/willing staff

IMDB says...

Legend (1985)

I don't think in the two month or so window period between the release of Legend and the release of Zelda, that miyamoto could have seen legend, thought up a complete ripoff of it, had it developed, and released it. :/

I don't like the idea of 'selling out'. Makes me think of the unimaginative copy and paste style of the Jak & Daxter games. I don't want pop culture reference and game trends smooshed together on top of a Mario platformer.

At least, 1080 gave me my snow racing fix without being forced to play "Tony Hawk on Ice".
