First Review - Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

I searched for this, but didn't see it posted...

From Variety.com:

Painstakingly designed, hyperrealistically detailed and utterly impenetrable to everyone except fans of the original computer game on which it's based, CGI-fabricated tale "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children" reps a soulless slab of Japanimation -- neither a final installment nor exceptionally fantastic -- with little crossover potential. A cinematic spinoff of the seventh in a series of 12 PlayStation "Final Fantasy" games (basis for 2001's "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within""Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within"), pic intersperses confusingly edited shoot-'em-up segments with usual anime futuristic guff about haunted warriors, evil multinationals and New Age claptrap.

Pic opens with bright red, wolflike creatures, whose significance is never explained, gamboling through a mountainous landscape before cutting deadpan to a black title card stating "498 years earlier...," striking a humorous note, perhaps unintentional, sadly lacking in rest of film.

A voiceovervoiceover and accompanying images explains how the Earth's "lifeforce" rose up and wiped out a whole load of bad guys some time before. Many survivors, particularly film's posse of cutesy orphans, are suffering from mark-leaving disease called Gostigma.

In the devastated city of Midgar, blond hero Cloud (voiced by Takahiro Sakurai) runs a delivery service in association with superbabe Tifa (voiced by upcoming ingenue Ayumi Ito) and others. While out in the outlying badlands one day, he runs afoul of a gang of three silvery-haired biker boys led by Kadaj, who wants to be reunited with his "mother""Mother" (seemingly some genetic thingy called Jenova that produced a race of superwarriors).

Kadaj lures orphans in Cloud's care to a swamp and feeds them water that cures their Gostigma but also turns them temporarily evil.

These sci-fi narrative stylings are merely irritating chatter that fills in the bits between the big fight and battle sequences in every reel, opportunities for the animators to show off swish new textures like smoke that becomes corporeal and flashy lighting effects that bounce off the semi-mechanical monsters under the bad guys' control. Centerpiece is a huge ruckus in the city center which pitches Cloud and Co. -- an assortment of characters seemingly culled from earlier incarnations of the "Final Fantasy" games -- against the Kadaj cadre and a dragonlike beast wearing samurai armor.

In typical computer-game style, each battle is with a yet more ferocious foe until Cloud finally faces off against the supposedly super-nasty Sephiroth from earlier in the franchise's story.

Little attention has been paid to designing the action so that it unfolds in a mentally mappable environment, or to crafting a story accessible to newbies unfamiliar with "Final Fantasy" backstory. Although skin texture is photorealistic, the characters' faces, as is often the case in anime, have a very limited range of expressions.

Hyperactive editing further frustrates general comprehension. Music by Nobuo Uematsu alternates between sparse piano noodlings, pop metal thrashings and cloying power ballads for the closing credits.

Camera (color), Nozue Takeshi; editor, Kenji Kijima; music, Nobuo Uematsu; art director, Yuusuke Naora; main character designer, Nomura; mechanic, creature design, Takayuki Takeya; sound designer (Dolby Digital), Shojiro Nakaoka. Reviewed at Venice Film Festival (out of competition), Aug. 30, 2005. Running time: 100 MIN.

So basically, fans of the game will love it and understand it, while folks who can't tell Final Fantasy from Final Fight should avoid it.

Yep, that difinately sounds like a direct sequel storywise and I'm sure fans don't give a damn if it's unaccessable to people unfamiliar to FFVII cause I sure don't.

I thought the last Final Fantasy movie was awesome:

How many more times are RPG makers going to fucking use the Gaia theory for their stories? :lol

I stopped reading right there. >__<

I was attempted to do the same, but pushed forward. It definately sounds like the super extended ending that clears up over half a decade of speculation on how FFVII supposely "ended."

Which is also the basic plotline of every novel, show, movie, play, sonnet, haiku, poem, novela, epic, and fable with an antagonist.

I wouldn`t watch this even if someone gave me 100 bucks to do it.

I'd do it for a 100. I'd enjoy it too, if I was watching it with a bunch of FF fanboys. Just so I can pick it apart and yell out how overrated FFVII was.

The "Terms of Endearment" boss was my favorite

Whoa, so let me get this straight.... the film based sequel to a game makes no sence if you haven't played the game? Also this is variety so even if they bashed having played the game through I'd ignore them. They hated Kung Fu hustle for crying out loud... and they also hate grammer along with the english language.

I guess the extreme fan-service aspect of the movie is probably why they're skipping a big theatrical release...

They hated "Kung Fu Hustle"?! Screw you Variety!

Easily the funniest post I've read today. Also, what the fuck is this review? Basically they had no idea what FF7 was about, and they wrote a lazy review about how they didn't understand the backstory. I'm not even a big FF7 fan, but that review just reads badly. And how do you not like Kung Fu Hustle?

Its funny, everyone (on gamefaqs anyway) always considers Sepiroth to be the most evil bad guy ever thought up. Now, I haven't played FF7 for many years, but I certaintly dont remember him being that evil at all. In fact, you never really saw much of him during the game in its entirety. So, the review is accurate calling Sephiroth a "supposedly evil bad guy" since he never has really done much to give him that title.

Oh wait, he killed off an annoying character...

What? Sephiroth killed a whole bunch of people and was attempting to nearly destroy the world so he could become a god. He isn't "all that evil"?

I considered someone like Doctor Hojo and Jenova more evil, Sephiroth was far too compassionate in his quest that he went mad, he's still difinately evil being a mass murderer and all.

Except a few of the main characters, I dont believe that he killed that many people. I think he killed a lot of Shinra employees, but it was hard to have compasion for those guys.

He set fire to Nibelheim, and IIRC killed some of the townspeople.

He destroyed the town of Niebelham and killed most of it's people.

President Shinra may have deserved it, but what about all the low level guys he killed? Not everyone who works there is evil. Look at Reeve.

And that's besides the fact that he was attempting to kill most people on the planet so he could rule it. How many people do you have to kill or attempt to kill before you're evil?

yes, but he did that because that was Jenova's will, not his own, during the whole game he was a puppet to the Jenova cells he had on his body

at least that's how I remember it, it's been 4 years since the last time I played it

I'm saving this for an official DVD release. But the Last Order Ova is the one I can't wait for the fansub.

I'll watch the fansub before buying, if there aren't enough extras or if the movie isn't all that I 'm not sure if I'll get it. Not to mention there's always the possibility of a Limited 2-dvd edition coming out later

That's arguable. Sepiroth became obsessed with the expriments in the town, he would do nothing but read about the mutations, the experiments with materia. When finding the "truth" of his existence he went mad and started killing everyone before he finally found Jenova himself and Cloud confronted him and Cloud killed him in retaliation.

I guess you can say he's the fallen hero.

I'll still watch this to pay tribute to the great game that was Final Fantasy VII, but I highly doubt Variety was so off the mark they missed the fact that this was a good movie.

Based on the review, it most certainly sounds like a redux of the Spirits Within, only this time, it is based on a relatively popular RPG.

The Square that I had a lot of hope for in bringing the kind of epic story telling done in Japanese RPGs to the big screen is dead to me now. Square really seems more content in dicking around sci-fi and raping their properties qnd gouging their otaku fanbase than going out there and writing another good story they can put on the screen that MAY appeal to the mainstream.

I take it Variety wrote their review after the Venice Festival screening last night, right..??

It sounds good, the review made it sound a little like "Fist of the North Star" which was a very good animated movie, and the series rocked.

Only thing that worries me is that it might not be as epic as I'd hope. It all depends on how many locales, areas they visit, reminisce about or what have you. If it's just the city and the outskirts, it might not be as epic as it could've been.

I could care less about the story myself. It could be in Japanese with no subtitles and I'll still watch it

I have 2 questions:

1. I need to get a region-free DVD player, could I go to like Best Buy and get one, or do I need to get one off the internet?

2. Where can I pre-order this movie?

Well for #1, Wal-Mart has this one which is all Region out of the box apparently:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=2598455

As for #2...Which one? You can preorder the NA version at GameStop and the like but there's no solid release date. As for the JPN version, you can get it from Play-Asia for one at a price of $47.90:
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-a7-77-1-15-Final+Fantasy+VII-70-p3z.html

Or if you want the Limited Edition Advent Pieces which will set you back over $300-400:
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-a7-77-c-15-Final+Fantasy+VII-70-q1f.html

My bad, I ment JPN sorry. I've never ordered from PA before, how reliable are they? And is that model not "confimed" if it is region-free?
