How's this for inspiration and motivation. There's a blind guy that goes to my gym. Dude hit the weights hard. Very awesome

There's a guy that's burned over half of his body at mine. Dude was using 2 of those arm canes last year. Now he walks around unassisted. And he's gotten much bigger. People like that make me work harder when I see them.

Any advice on weight lifting shoes? Having read parts of SS Rip recommends lifting shoes as #1 equipment, what brands etc? I'm assuming online will be much cheaper than local AU, but would need to try on for feel / size, not sure where to go though.

I work out in Vibrams. Wouldn't DL, Squat, or press any other way (other than barefoot).

I'm glad someone asked about shoes as I was going to ask the same thing. I've been working out in my Vibrams but that was more out of not having anything else remotely suitable.

Well, there's good ol flat sole converse that work just as well and a lot of powerlifters use those.

Those vibrams and minimus shoes are nothing but fads. But have fun with plantar fasciitis.

Um, what?

Even the flat soled converse are basically the same thing and lifters have been using them for years.

Where are you getting this?

If you're talking about running, there's a tribe in Mexico that runs everywhere barefoot, and has for many, many years. They they also have fantastic joint/foot health. There was a book published about them not all that long ago.

Why do you think that?

I think going from overly supportive and arched shoes to barefoot isn't wise and should be transitioned gradually but I do think they're better than shoes with crazy amounts of support.

It's as simple as coming home from work and kicking off your shoes and instantly feeling better. Any back pain seems to instantly dissipate, knee soreness, hips, all can be as a result of issues with the feet. Ladies waking around in high heels affects their calves length, can cause anterior pelvic tilt among others.

So while I don't think they're a fad, the hardcore mentality of scaling rocks in Vibrams might be a bit extreme.

I feel much better walking around in NB Minimus shoes, shoes with flat soles and little to no arch or heel support -- so that's me.

I wear these, but in brown:

I've heard that vibrams aren't meant to be used on urban streets. There are trail running shoes, like the NB minimus.

And people who pronate/supinate should stay away from the vibrams since they can cause even more rolling of the foot.

It's preferable to run on trails but that's the case with padded shoes as well. It's mainly about how you land on your feet and padded shoes makes it so you tend to lad on your heel. This video here is talks about it in depth and why heel strikes are bad. And obviously, you should ease into it regardless of the type of ground you run on.

I wear Vibram fivefingers for hiking.

For training I sometimes wear Chuck Taylor's but I try to find shoes with an even thinner sole when I can. I found a pair of Vans that have a sole so thin that I can roll them like paper. I don't wear shoes whenever I get the opportunity so the thinner and more pliable the soles the better. I've been living in these Vans outside of home.

At the same time I don't suggest them to everyone. So many people lack the flexibility and strength to run, let alone walk without a thick-soled shoe that jumping straight into barefoot running would be catastrophic for them. Too much too soon can lead to a bout of plantar fasciitis.

In a Western world full of heel-strikers, stompers and waddlers the dangers of barefoot travel seem downright mundane.

When is it usually alright to go back after getting a cold. It really wasn't a bad one. It was probably worse wednesday, scratchy throat, kind of tired. I feel pretty good today just a little nasally. I just don't wanna relapse or anything like that. I did feel it coming on tuesday so I didn't go then either. Kind of itching to get back in, haven't been moving much over the past few days.

for those who like listening to music while lifting:

do you prefer in-ear buds or over the ear headphones?

i just broke my apple earbuds and i had a pair of over the ear headphones that arent too big/bulky that i might bring with me next time i go to the gym. i just havent seen anyone in person use this type of headphone while working out.

Do you have a fever or any breathing problems associated with the cold? If not, you'll be okay. Just listen to your body during your workout (as always), and don't overexert (as always). Working out too hard will make recovery from your cold (or any disease) that much longer.

on the subject of shoes, i was wondering if anyone here has any experience with the Inov-8 shoes? again, couldnt tell if they were just a fad type shoe and there are much cheaper and better alternatives available. right now my wife and i do the crossfit stuff in those zig reeboks and i have since discovered (since i knew nothing about it before) that you could not ask for much worse shoes when it comes to lifting. a lot of the people i see are wearing some flat new balance shoes and that might be another i should consider. it seems like every shoe when i go to the stores in the mall are just basketball shoes or running shoes and hardly anything has a flat sole.

A while ago I detailed a conversation with a coworker where he adamantly believed that crunches and such could slim his waistline. Well, FitnessGAF, he was at it again just yesterday. Small talk turned into fitness stuff, and he's still doing ridiculous shit. It eventually comes down to him asking me if "that ab machine is best thing to get rid of my belly fat, right?"

It was like picking up exactly where we left off.

I still went over some fat loss fundamentals with him, just like last time - like that conversation never happened. But since he's trying to eat 1,200 calories of salad and hitting the gym for two hours plus sauna time for ten days straight, I'm not holding my breath.

It really messes with my zen thing, man.

I don't mind talking with him, he's a nice guy and we have a few common interests, like videogames, MMA and such. I just try to steer everything away from strength, conditioning and diet as much as possible.

So, instead of risking injury checking my 1rms for starting 5/3/1 on Monday I went ahead and used his formula to calculate 1rm.

Here's where I stand. That's not as bad as I thought. and my bench/dead are very nice to me.

Military Press 1 × 255

Bench Press 1 × 390

Squat 1 × 395

Deadlift 1 × 495

Obviously I'll be using 90% of these numbers.

I can't wait to get going on this.

Just round to nearest 5, unless you can accurately add thousandths of a pound to the bar

lol, obviously not.

Do you do the 5 upper 10 lower post cycle or do you do less?

I did get two 1.25 plates so I can take the progression slower if I want.

Edit: I'll go ahead and clean that post up since you mentioned it though.

Yeah assuming no problems I add 10 per week to lower body starting at the 90% number

And 5 for lower

I guess it's not really zen then.

I look at people like that as a gift. In terms of fitness advice, I can become the author of their reality. Tell them things like pickled beets and pigs feet induce rapid fat loss due to gycogens in their protein branches. Tell them that you do it all the time.

The zen thing is from Tron Legacy, I've watched that movie entirely too much lately and something about Jeff Bridges saying that line cracks me up.

It would be amusing to make things up that are completely ridiculous, but if that was the case I may as well write for a zany alternative fitness blog. "ACAI will cure everything!" "Cycle pickle brine for massive gains!" "Eating rabbit heart will improve your reflexes!"

Yeah, I could do that.

Time to reset squat. Shit. I hate going backwards but I've definitely gotten weaker

What happened?

A slow stall. But I screwed up this cycle and did the 3x3 on the 3x5 week, then never recovered. Got the 3 the first week, missed it the 2nd week, and failed the "1"

Last cycle just barely got the "1"

Goodbye Smolov gains from last summer.

Ouch bud, sorry to hear it.

You going to try to just reset this cycle for squats or dial back a cycle?

http://blackironbeast.com/5/3/1/calculator

1x5 @230 for BP. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO PROBLEM.

Not sure I understand bud.

First comment was just for a 5/3/1 calculator. I know you said that you got the numbers down but just thought I post up another resource for calculating those values in case anyone else was interested.

Second comment was me at the gym today. Just feeling pretty damn good about my progress. I don't even know if I want to focus on a cut this summer as getting bigger and stronger is amazing.

Ahh, that calculator actually uses the forumla that wendler shows in his book. There's a lot of other ones out there that say they do (use the 5/3/1 calculator) but they are wrong.

Wendlers formula is Weight X Reps X .0333 + Weight.

I went through the top search results with the calculators and that one (the one you showed) was the only one that actually had the right formula. (Also did the math myself obviously to be sure).

So yeah, that one that you linked is actually the one I used. And it's accurate based off of Wendlers book and formula.

Not quite, but with the help of Wendler's program I'll be at an and past it in no time (well, no time being about 2-5 months).

On another note, anyone find parallel grip pullups easier?

I wonder why that is.

I believe the general consensus is parallel grip easier than chins easier than pulls. I've read that the only significant different between them is the main elbow flexor though, Chins use your bicep more, pull ups use something else more, and I suppose a hammer grip is somewhere in between.

As a sidenote a year ago I couldn't do a single pull-up. I bet my brother today that I could do more than he did, he did ten, I did 11. Feels good man. Muscle-up here I come.

Yeah I saw that, good shit man.

Pullups are more lat, chins more bicep but still back too.

I guess that makes sense about parallel grip. I like doing those more now, lol.

I think it has to do with a couple of things. For one, I think it's easier on your wrists. Kind of like how hammer curls are easier on my wrists than regular curls. I recall xframe and me discussing doing pullups with rotating rings, allowing a natural range of motion for the wrists. Second, I think it involves slightly more bicep than pullups, but less than a chinup.

Failed on my 5/3/1 week of squats. Feels bad man.

Too much cardio?
Not enough food or sleep?
Time to reset?
Who knows...

Yeah and I'm also running a Frankenstein version of 5/3/1 with Smolov Jr. for bench where I'm doing lower-body assistance exercise on Wednesday's, so I guess it's understandable.

I'm going to just re-run this cycle of 5/3/1 with the same weights and not reset.

Well I guess I'm an idiot. So now I've re-run this Frankenstein program, and I didn't really change what I was eating, and got the same results. So, yeah. Don't be me.

I'm confused though because I've run two cycles of Smolov Jr. for bench and have missed 1 rep. The first cycle I gained about 20 lbs on my bench press, to a paltry 265. I'm betting that I gained an additional 15 or 20 lbs this cycle. I've been benching 4X weekly and it really hasn't bothered me at all. That probably tells me something about my bench press ability but I don't know what it is.

So obviously it's all just too much - something has to give - and it's been squats.

Dunno what I'll do.

Actually, I even got rid of lower body assistance on Wednesdays.

It's just been
Monday - Deadlift 531, Bench Smolov Jr
Wednesday - Bench Smolov Jr, Rows
Friday - Squat 531, Bench Smolov Jr
Sunday - Bench Smolov Jr, Abs

So it's difficult to change what I'm doing since my bench has been progressing and my bench is historically so crappy. So I'm afraid to change what I'm doing with it since it's working.
