I've been finding it hard to find the energy and motivation to get into a legitimate gym routine, and I was thinking of joining a circuit training program to get me started. I've heard good things...anyone have experience that they can tell me about?

I know a lot of people here (myself included) consume a lot of rice. Anyone have a rice cooker or do you people just boil the stuff in a pot? I'm planning on getting a dedicated cooker since I eat rice almost everyday and preparing it in a pot is a chore.

Here's a dumb question, when you guys take pictures to keep track of your progress, what "pose" do you do? Do you keep arms to the side, non flexed? Raise 1 arm up and flex?

Does it not matter as long as you stay consistent?

Also, eating cottage cheese with pineapple from Staters Bro for the first time, pretty tasty, and 22g of protein per cup. Not bad.

I have a complete "pose routine" I do dating back over 3 years that I repeat for progress shots. It includes front, back, side, flexed, and non flexed

I threw out my rice cooker. Too much counter space especially for somebody who loves to cook. Plus, I can cook rice in a pot in 25 minutes- just have to be careful the last 5 minutes to make sure it doesn't stick.

We brought our Zojirushi cooker from Japan even though I insisted we didn't need it because of the different consistency of rice here. I was right. So instead we bought a microwave steamer that worked fine, but clean up was a hassle. So now my wife loves boiling rice in a pot because of how easy it is and the cooker sits neglected unless we want to make something like takikomi. Other than checking to make sure it's not boiling over, it's not that much of a chore. I always make about a week's worth (for a family) and freeze them in little plastic packs.

Just get a good and simple rice cooker. I have a National/Panasonic rice cooker for years now and it's functioning better than other cookers we've bought.

Also why brown rice over white rice?

I love my rice cooker. I put some rice in before going to the gym and it's cooked perfectly by the time I get home. Can't recommend it enough.

Don't waste your money buying an expensive one, though. I bought a random Chinese brand cooker for £5 and it works perfectly.

Cooker. You can get a cheap one for like $20 that does the trick. I wouldn't spend more than that unless you're looking to make sushi/sticky rice or something.

My shitty rice cooker makes white/brown rice and quinoa just fine.

edit: ^^^ what he said...go cheap

Look, the diet itself is sound; it’s the philosophy that’s bullshit. Eat what you want. Just leave the damn cavemen out of it.

Lyle McDonald has argued a similar point in the past; frankly it's one I agree with. And there's no doubt that a dialectic on paleo nutrition will inevitably lead to an argument on it's health, which isn't a problem in itself until you realize neither side is using the same definition of the term (should they have bothered to define it in the first place).

Tenuously related is the definition of the title in this thread, "fitness." Thankfully Anton Sugar was smart enough to know that fitness is a vague idea with varying definitions so the very first part of the OP suggests picking a very specific physical goal and working from there. The more specific the better!

Which brings me back to "paleo." Are you (in the general sense) eating paleo as a means to an end or as the end in itself?

Finally got back to a full 3x5x225 on squats. Was above that around 18 months ago but starting grad school really killed my schedule for lifting. Started up again strong about 3 months ago and am much, much happier because of it. Added about 10 lbs in those 3 months, some of which I am sure is fat, but it is all progress as far as I'm concerned.

This quote depressed the fuck out of me...

“Look at that British girl who lived off of chicken nuggets for almost eighteen years, ” Wenkel continued. “The fact that her body was able to utilize the meager nutritional value of those things and get her to reproductive age is an incredible feat. It shows exactly how effective our versatility has been in human development. In a strict evolutionary framework, all your body needs to do is keep you alive until you breed. After that, you’re just living on borrowed time.”

If that's not incentive to get your ass in the gym and eat healthily, I don't know what is...

Does anyone have a link to some of those body recomp pics with the women at the same weight before and after training for a recomp? My mother simply does not believe muscle gain can be a positive thing because it means adding weight to the scale, and I'd like to show her a few examples.

You do the ones where you keep your legs straight and only bend your hips down? Or the ones where you bend your knees and drive with your legs?

I do the latter.

Ask her if she thinks a 125 pound woman with high body fat is in better shape/health than a 125 pound woman with low body fat. It seems like a lot of women balk at weightlifting because they don't want to look like a bodybuilder. The fact of the matter is that it would take years for them to look like bodybuilders (along with a lot of "supplements"). All the Hollywood actors and actresses do weightlifting, and that's typically what most people want to look like because they see them on TV every day.

White has a higher glycemic index over brown, if you care about that sort of thing. That index is a measure of how fast a particular food raises blood glucose levels, compared with the same amount of glucose.

Yeah unfortunately she responds with "I sould just lose first to get the scale down". Oh silly people.

I've ditched rice all together and opted for quinoa. More calories, protein, and zinc for testosterone levels and what not. I throw some coconut milk and butter in boiling water, throw in my grain and viola. I don't add salt though. Don't wanna bloat.

Anybody familiar with "Insanity" maximum interval training? Just started doing it two days ago...it's doing a number on me, but some of the moves require more room than I have in my place.

Just interested if anyone on GAF has had success with it.

That's a common thought, and makes people feel better when they're at a lower weight, even if they've lost muscle mass in the process. It's just harder to put that mass back on later, and you'll get discouraged when you do because if you're watching the scale, that weight will start to creep up as you build muscle.

I've done it twice now. Like anything else it takes a week or two to get used to it. The cardio is really intense, and you'll be really sore. Never gets easy, but it gets a little more bearable.

Going on vacation tomorrow. I can't frickin' wait. South Carolina here I come! (please don't rain when I'm at the beach...)

A+++++ post, would read again. :) Really great work man, keep at it! Reading about your latest gym endeavors always keeps me motivated to keep going.

Man, I saw a guy at my gym doing power cleans today. How important are these in a strength training program? I've never done them, usually just stick to conventional strength lifts.

I honestly don't know, I don't do them. A lot of strength lifters don't do them, but a lot do. I think the main "gain" from them is supposed to be explosiveness, but I'm completely knowledgeable in them.

I've been finding it hard to find the energy and motivation to get into a legitimate gym routine, and I was thinking of joining a circuit training program to get me started. I've heard good things...anyone have experience that they can tell me about?

Instead of "trying to find motivation" figure out why working out/being fit/losing weight is important to you. If you have to "find motivation" this entire thing is a doomed endeavor before it even begins. It shouldn't feel like work.

I love my rice cooker, yeah, like Nerdy said it takes up room, but I love having it and just tossing some water/rice into that thing and letting it to on autopilot.

If she's worried about getting big...

http://www.livestrong.com/article/370071-do-women-get-big-when-lifting-weights/

I'm certain you've touched upon all the points in this article with her though.

Yeah, it's just a case where all she seems to care about is the number staring back from the scale. I just can't wrap my head around that mindset. In my head, the goal is to feel/look good. Why the damn scale obsession? So frustrating!

All rhetorical of course. I get why, but it's still endlessly frustrating people can't break from that mentality.

Blame shit like the biggest loser, where all they show is results and 10% of the work, not to mention the unsustainability of what those people are actually doing.

Then they wonder why those people gain it all back when they are off the show (and I don't mean when they get kicked off only to go home with personal trainers from the show).

Did it help you lose weight?

Yes, some. The main downside for me is that since it's strictly bodyweight focused I lost some muscle mass. I got leaner, which was nice.. But my strength has really suffered. I didn't stick completely to the diet they recommend, so I'd say I had good results but not as good as it would have been if I were eating 100% to their diet. You will need a good amount of calories in your diet to have the energy to do the workouts. If you try to do it on a deficit it could be pretty rough. Rough as in you'll feel more lightheaded than you normally would and you'll hit the wall where you have no more energy sooner.

I suggest keeping a bucket nearby for a few days, maybe the whole time. 4 weeks in, when you get to the max workouts, those really kick your ass. But don't be discouraged if you can't do 100% of the workouts. The personal trainers they have doing everything on the videos can't even do 100%, heck Shaun T is way too bulky and his cardio is nowhere near good enough to do everything. He usually does part of an exercise and then is gassed and walks around for a few minutes talking to everyone else.

Anyone ever feel like this?

Planned to sleep in today to take a rest day from the gym...but it felt like a magnet sucked me out of bed and pushed me there for a morning cardio session I didn't plan for.

Oh well.

well, I did it. There is a triathlon sprint this Sunday that I wasn't planning on doing but now I am. My friends who compete on the Ironman level, told me that you have to start at some point so why not now. I've been running and swimming but not biking so this should be....interesting.

My bike is a downhill mountain bike on top of that!

Upper back and shoulders are so damn sore. Who knew face pulls are such a great exercise? I love it.

As an Asian, it is essential that I have a working rice cooker.

Best way to cook up the rice. I do something similar to that and it comes out perfect everytime.

Going to do squats/deads today. Here's hoping my squat strength comes back pretty quickly now that I'm back on a normal diet.

Nope. Do not ruin the image in my head where you are in face your avatar. Fuck that.

He's posted his picture countless times! lol

Found something interesting. When I "really" started my hard cut I was around 235-238 in May. I found a close picture for then and now kind of a shitty "MS paint" comparison, but here it is. Not meaning to toot my own horn more, but it shows how much more progress I made during the hard cut than all the other months. This tells me everything I was doing before that "hard cut" was pretty much fucking around, lol. At least now I know what I need to do to make shit work.

I do scarecrows instead of face pulls but they're basically the same movement. I gotta say, this year I started doing rotator cuff strengthening exercises before every single workout and it's one of the best fitness decisions I've ever made.

Agreed, when I started doing external rotations, band pull aparts and heavy rowing and my shoulders don't bother me at all anymore. I try to get everyone I know to do them because everyone complains about shoulder problems.

Geez it's been 10 weeks and I still can't even do a complete chin-up. I can hold for 25 seconds 10 foot elevated handles, but after that I'm completely dead. Think I've made progress on every exercise aside from this.

And yeah, I've made the mistake of lifting like 20-30 minutes after a HUGE breakfast... it's not a pleasant feeling xD. I can only hit the gym in the early morning (8 or 8:30, but it's difficult for me to wake up anytime earlier than 7:30).

How importent would you say BCAA is for the workout? I have been using it for a month and wouldn't say it's night and day but I haven't tried without since starting either.

No clue. I'll find out. Recovery seems to go better these days.

Some people, especially while fasting, tend to take 10g or so of BCAAs 15 minutes before they work out. There's some evidence that suggests that taking BCAAs before you train is beneficial.

However, they're completely unnecessary. A 3.5oz hamburger has more BCAAs in it than several grams in it of a BCAA tablet medley. Unless you're fasting, if you're eating enough throughout the day you can do without. However, if you are fasting than it would be best if you have them in your system if you train fasted, but again it's not needed at all.

Truly, if you're diet is proper they don't do much as all they are is the AA your body gets from meat or protein sources anyways.

Please, please, please take this the right way but if you can't do any pull ups you may want to not have a huge breakfast. When I weighed 225-230, I would struggle to get 15 pullups. Now that I am 190, I can do 20-30 pull ups.
