I accidentally cheated and had a slice of whole wheat pizza and a chicken parm slice. Aghhhhhhhhhhh. I didn't even lose weight this week because I cheated every other day.

I'm just saying, save the cheat meals for when you can make good use of those calories!
This was an accident :( I had a long day and my family offered to take me out and my eyes were much larger than my stomach... first week in 8 that I haven't lost weight too... sitting at 151. :( :( :(

I'm finding a way to the gym tonight now.

Fuck it let's do this. Nearly 2 months since the above picture and here is a new pic I took yesterday (I think?):

[.IMG]http://i.imgur.com/uP0cW.jpg[/IMG]

Around 90kg now which is an all-time high for me. My size and strength is doing wonders for me on the football pitch, moreso than ever before. I feel fucking strong.

So yeah.

Look great man. Definitely see a size improvement.

I wish I took before pics...will have to dig up some older photos of me if I can.

Just going by face alone...I think I can tell I lost some. New on left, old on right

[.IMG]http://i.imgur.com/uvREI.jpg?1[/IMG]

edit: lol, just noticed the chins on my right

You as well. You look a lot better.

In my heart you always will be.

DIG IT!

FallingEdge, I love you

I love you guys as well <3

Lookin' good man! Good being an understatement, looking EXCELLENT, but you get that enough from gay gaf, lol.

Haha. Thx dood. Always looking to improve. My lifts are no where near yours though. Always need to push for more.

Wow! You really do look awesome! But you are big, aren't you?

Mind if I ask what you do to get those huge arms?

I'm currently around 213. I guess you can say I'm big but I want more. I want to get bigger and stronger. Bigger chest, traps, and lats.

As for my arms, I primary did chins, pullups, pulldowns, close grip bench press, and more recently, curls and skullcrushers.

Posted many times before but this is my end game:

Falling Edge, all I can say is ThatYesWrestler.gif. Awesome.

flrwu.gif

FallingEdge what are your lifts at?

Right now... (all approx)

Military Press - 1RM @ 175
Bench Press - 1RM @ 265
Squat - 1RM @ 335
Deadlift - 1RM @ 405

They aren't very impressive but just gotta keep grinding it out.

FallingEdge, i have a question. Was your plan to cut first and then bulk? Also what was your weight/height before you began?

I was my heaviest at Feb @ ~ 225/230 | Leanest was July @ ~ 208

Lost a fair amount of my mass and strength =/

I really need to put some extra work into that V-taper. I only have it ever so slightly. The rest of my back looks great though. What are you guys doing to maximize it?

Also, I'm glad I've brought out the Wrasslegaf.

So, I ate my "victory pizza" (still eating it kinda) and it was great.

I think it's beginning its revenge though. The inside of my body sounds like a war is going on. This could be a bad thing.

Hit 110kg on my bench earlier without a spotter which I was quite happy about. One step closer to getting to 120kg. Quite happy that I'm getting back to my strength from a while back and my diet is getting there too. Think I might include some more squats in my sessions though - I'm thinking on back day - once every four sessions isn't enough.

Finally did my first ever set of deadlifts tonight. Started with 1 plate and did that fairly easily for 10 reps. So, I got a little frisky and went to 2 plates. I was able to do it for 4 reps! So, my final set, I dropped back down to a plate and 25's for 8.

I was in front of the mirror so I could watch my form. From what I could see I was doing okay. I'll probably watch more youtubes tonight to really get an idea of great form.

It felt great, I am now a convert. My hamstrings were absolutely on fire after doing them. Obviously there were some muscles in there that had never been pushed like that before. It made me laugh.

V-taper is:

1. narrow waist - low body fat percentage needed
2. broad shoulders - easy to hit anterior and posterior deltoids through compund lifts but some isolation work may be needed for the medial deltoid to maximise width
3. full, wide lats - pullups/chinups are great for width

well, I did it. There is a triathlon sprint this Sunday that I wasn't planning on doing but now I am. My friends who compete on the Ironman level, told me that you have to start at some point so why not now. I've been running and swimming but not biking so this should be....interesting.

My bike is a downhill mountain bike on top of that!

I'm going to start training for triathlons but I will need to learn how to swim fast before I will compete

Uh, you might want to re-evaluate what you're eating.

Why's that?

I eat things like chicken, fish, eggs, beans, rice, cheese, wheat. Not in vast amounts because I'm actually on the milk diet (due to low appetite and money). I've went from 10 and a half stone to 11 stone and the only difference I've noticed is a slight change in the size of my chest and legs. To a lesser extent my arms.

I'm not eating unhealthily like greasy foods, I've stopped drinking fizzy juice except one can of red bull per day. I also take supplements minimally, one scoop of protein shake after my workout. I don't particularly see whats wrong?

It's the way you worded it. Gaining that much weight after five workouts. Assuming you don't work out once a week, five workouts is most likely barely 2 weeks of workouts? But the truth is you shouldn't have gained that much weight even in a month. Assuming you're also taking creatine, going up a few pounds after loading is normal. But even if you were lifting/eating perfectly the most "good" weight you should have put on is maybe a pound or two at most. Which means the rest of that weight is..

edit: just to confirm, I don't know what a stone is (British unit of measure yes, but how much weight it actually is TOO LAZY TO GOOGLE) but you did say 4kg which is close to 9lbs for our non-metric friends

I shit every day.

Edit: if thats what you were implying.

Before my hand injury I put on 7kg in 3 weeks. I only dropped because I stopped taking in as much calories. What i've gained now is basically me being back to the weight I was before.

Because that's mostly water and fat. If you keep gaining weight at that rate you're not gonna be happy with the result.

At least you do squats and deads...

When I used to work out at the Eastern Hills BAC in Williamsville/Clarence there was this guy with a gigantic torso and classic V-taper but his legs were pencils, it was the most awkard thing I've ever seen.

He was also walking around with his arms constantly at an angle. Just massive.

the genes of some people must be exceptional...

on a serious note: i dont get this whole bulking thing and i really ask myself if its kind of a cultural difference between america und maybe europe? im living in germany, i know tons of people that work out on different levels, from expert to beginner, but not a single one is "bulking". obviously they try to become more muscular, but at the same time they try to stay as lean as possible. this is a serious question :)

I guess it's all in what your goals are. Some people are incredibly skinny and want to be stockier and bulkier, I would assume that's mostly who's doing the bulking. The grass is always greener, etc. I'm in the US and have no interest in "bulking," I've had enough of being bulky. Having better muscle definition, being stronger, while getting slightly bigger is probably my goal. Ultimately my goal is more along the lines of being lean and cut.

I'd say the majority of us when we say bulking are referring to eating and supplementing enough to offset calories lost during workouts and promote muscle growth. We do not mean what the above poster seems to be doing. Bulking doesn't mean "eat like crazy", it's just a way of saying you're on a diet to gain weight in muscle. Of course there's real bulking that professional bodybuilders do but I don't think that's any of us. I linked it a few pages ago, but here's a good read on "bulking":

As it is right now, I can't really deviate from the milk diet.

I basically just drink a gallon of milk per day, what I eat tends to be something along the lines of a bowl of wheetabix in the morning with a couple bananas. Lunch at work, being a sandhich with tuna or chicken then a meal at night. Usually something like 5 boiled eggs a can of tuna mixed in mayo, or chicken and beans..

I'm an incredibly skinny guy still, so with that 4kg, i'm sitting at 70-71kg. So any weight is good for me right now. If I wasn't going to the gym, and taking in this much, I'd be more worried, as I get bigger I can adjust my diet accordingly.

Why do you think it was a good idea to make nearly 100 lb jumps during your first time performing the deadlift? Also, what will happen to your form when there's no mirror around?

People who want to increase their muscular bodyweight will need to eat to gain weight. That means more food. Sometimes people will go crazy with it, sometimes they don't.

Nice job, Fallingedge and Shogun. You guys done really good work for yourselves and for showing that there's doesn't need to be strength/aesthetic divide when you train.

Normal for hips/glutes to burn after squats? Been doing them for months but don't remember this feeling.

What is a good warmup progression? I usually do a form check with an empty bar, then put 45's on for another warmup set, then get into my weight.

But today I went straight from empty bar to my last week's high. I eeked out 3 sets then did a cooldown set of 10 at 135.

I suck at squats. Try to get down to as near parallel as I can get but at 6'2 I'm having flexibility issues...I keep my feet about shoulder width apart, a little wider, toes pointed 30 degrees outward.

Just something that gets better with time?

I've done three full sets of shoulder shrugs with 110's before. I've always had strong traps and lower back. It seemed like I could handle it after testing out 135.

In my gym, its almost impossible to not be in front of a mirror when working with free weights.

Never jump from bar to work weight, you're gonna hurt yourself. It's not "abnormal" for glutes/hips to "feel it" after squats, but you took a big risk there.

I haven't been able to go to the gym as much as I wanted to the past week. I've lost a lot of tone and strength even in this past week. How do you guys get motivated again after feeling this way?

I don't see how a week could sap you that much. I took off a week to attend my brothers destination wedding and it didn't take much to get back into the swing of things. Even improved some of my lifts in other areas.

Just bite the bullet and go back. There are plenty of mornings where I don't feel like going to the gym but I do, and that has generated some of my best workouts ever.

This is a guy who has no use of his legs who is benching 620+ lbs

Get your ass in the gym.

That was a way better answer.

Yeah, but I think I just work harder on my deads/squats/etc, and never push hard enough on pullups/row/etc. That's something I'm going to work on. For my strength the fact that I can only do 7 or 8 pullups is a joke. I was so gungho about them a year ago when I couldn't do one, then got complacent.

Some of it is just a holdover from 70s bodybuilding culture, especially in the US. Eat all you can, get all the muscle you can, worry about the fat later.

We now know there are better/more efficient ways.

Missing out on one week isn't a big deal. In fact, I think it's pretty healthy to get away from working out for periods of time. Unless you are training for a specific event.

It's a marathon not a sprint, etc etc

Basically I'm fucked into trying to drop about 10 lbs of fat while gaining muscle?

It's just going to ensure you aren't doing either as efficiently as possible, and make the overall process take longer.

Ive been doing 5x5 for about a month now, albeit I was substituting pulldowns for chin-ups.
pretty sure ive gained about 2lbs (im assuming a mixture of fat and muscle) which really isnt what I wanted to do. So now I'm going to add more cardio to my regimen.
And God only knows what I'm going to do to my diet, the more I workout the more I eat.
Sitting at about 1800 cals per day now.
I need to just win the lotto so I can quit my job and do this shit fulltime..

You just have to kinda accept that if you want to see large muscle gains, some fat will come with it. You can gain muscle with minimal fat, but the muscle gains are going to come much, much slower.

I'm considering buying all rubber bumper plates for the home gym. My Hampton weights are showing the first signs of rust, despite being kept in an attached garage. It's probably a combination of generally damp Pacific Northwest air and that my garage doubles as a brewery (boiling six gallon pots of water in there for hours every month certainly doesn't help the humidity). I need to buy more 45's no matter what, though, since I don't have enough once my primary gym membership expires at the end of September.

In addition to those expenses (either six rubber 45's or four steel 45's) I'm also looking at Olympic barbells. The knurling on my home bar is the smoothest of any I've ever used, and as you could imagine that doesn't help my grip on the deadlift.

The biggest drawback I see of going with rubber bumper plates is that they will be expensive and that the tendency to bounce reps is undeniable. The latter point isn't a make or break but I am considering it.

Thoughts?
