Dude, you are describing like 80% of the population of men that go to the gym. Especially High School age, guys.

Welcome to every gym ever from now til the end of time.

Guys do biceps/chest, women stretch & do cardio.

Personally I think a lot of the gym going women are worse off than guys, who wants the hell wants an 80 pound anorexically skinny woman?

and I really don't understand. I am definitely not the most educated guy in exercise, health or bodybuilding matters but common sense tells me I can't work out just one part every single day because after a while that part will get burnt out.

After a while, you'll run out of things to do if you just care for one body part and you should be gravitating automatically towards other body parts just to use your gym time and avoid boredom... no need for extra knowledge or wisdom there and yet, people grab the bar and do pull-ups mindlessly.

Can someone please explain to me the extreme dislike for soy protein that I tend to see in this (and some other online communities) thread? Or, give me a book or something else that I should read to understand this better myself? For lack of a better word, it always ends up sounding like bro science.

Oh, and I feel u bros about the 90% of guys that only do upper body. I wish I could snap pictures of the extreme cases of chicken legs/super upper body.

After years of wasting time in the gym with machines and multi-day routines, I decided to actually do some research on strength training, etc. I came across a few people and books that are interesting: 1) Pavel Tsatsouline, 2) Stuart McRoberts (Brawn), 3) Mark Rippetoe (Starting Strength), 4) Mark Twight, etc. I am most enamored with Rippetoe's books, and am going to start his routine. Has anyone read him or tried the routine? It's a very minimalist, back-to-the-basics program. Two workouts, A and B. 3 days a week. So week 1 = ABA and week 2 = BAB.

Workout A:
3x5 Squat
3x5 Bench
1x5 Deadlift
2x8 Dips
Abs (if necessary)

Workout B:
3x5 Squat
3x5 Standing Overhead Press
5x3 Power Cleans
2x8 Chins
Abs (if necessary)

He's a proponent of the classic multi-joint/muscle, olympic-style lifts, which is cool. I can see progress after two weeks, so it'll be fun to milk this "linear progression" as much as possible.

He also recommends drink whole milk after your workout, which I'm also trying. I don't need extra calories in my diet but it's a good source of nutrition.

Soy = fucks up your hormones. Reduces testosterone and increases estrogen.

http://www.mytopform.com/whey-protein-vs-soy-protein

From what little I know, whey is just superior in terms of effectiveness and absorption. So, I think that's why people shit on soy. There's also that estrogen thing, but I'm unsure on the validity of it.

I see a lot of bodybuilders recommend a mix of protein (whey, casein) throughout the day, so your body is always flooded with aminos to help repair muscle.

Tons of people here do a routine like that. I mean, just look at the OP :)

today was the busiest day the in the park where I go jogging. At the end of the path, there's equipment for everyone to use, the regular weightlifting stuff.

we were like 10 guys sharing equipment and I noticed I was the only one who gives a damn about legs and abs I don't even focus on that, I just try to not neglect those muscles, everyone seems to be obsessed with the chest and bicep combo.

if anyone here has that mindset, please don't. Is never late to take care of your body properly.

and quite frankly, decenty chest/arms with a massive gut and chicken legs doesn't look good :(

Everyday for me is chest and arm day.

Personally I think a lot of the gym going women are worse off than guys, who wants the hell wants an 80 pound anorexically skinny woman?

You'd be surprised =/

Totally noticed this today in the gym at my college... 4 dudes rotating on bicep curls, everyone else benching... and I'm the only one doing legs and abs, there gonna be a graduating class of troll people

Most of my friends seem to just want to be skinny, no muscle tone. So they run miles and miles or ride their bikes for 50 miles at a time. They also know next to nothing about diet so they use conventional diet wisdom like avoiding fat. High protein is a foreign concept.

Seems to be working for you

ok!

Black coffee to make squats extra interesting.
I bet! keeps you clenching.

I think you want to go kind of hungry. The last thing you ate being 4 hours ago.
4 hours seems a bit much for me, I try to have a snack around 4:00 then get to the gym by 5:30. sometimes I'll even have something around 5:00 A galss of milk etc.

1 lb of turkey. It helps balances out the 240 mg of caffeine I ingest.

How much time between eating that much and your workout?

It's a joke. There is the myth that eating turkey makes you drowsy.

I usually work out at night (9p-11p) so, I have already had dinner before my workout. I will drink a bottle of energy Mio (60 mg of caffeine) before I go though.

I need to do something different, before I started working out I was at 175, now I'm at 180.
I want to loose weight not gain dammit!

Are you going heavy on the weights? Drinking more water? You might be gaining muscle and/or retaining more water.

5lbs is not a whole lot. I fluctuate that much in a given day.

I know that feel bro. I did that for a while and have seemingly started losing again. Are you on a particular diet where you're watching what you eat, or are you just working out?

I actually don't see a lot of this at my gym. Most people, and even moreso for the regulars, seem to do a decent balance between upper and lower body workouts. Funnily enough the one guy who I always see doing nothing but dumbbell curls and upper-body machines looks about 350lbs of pure muscle. Dude's a mutant.

Curious what you guys think. The other day doing BBB squats I got a little light headed, and felt a sharp pain on the lower back of my head/upper neck. Figured I was going too fast, slowed down and it didn't happen. Then yesterday while I was engaged in, well, activities with my g/f, it came back. Figured I pinched a nerve and when I was exerting it was aggravating it. Last night though I woke up from a dream with the same pain. It subsides quickly and easily enough, but if I can avoid a costly doctor visit I'd prefer to. Does this sound like simply a nerve or some such, or something more serious? Only been a couple days.

This. soy has been proven to increase estrogen production.

Unfortunately they're putting soy in almost all processed foods these days so you're already getting more than enough of it.

Things to avoid at the grocery store: Soy, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Partially hydrogeneted oil (this is trans-fat).

I can tell you that it's damn near impossible to find almost anything that doesn't have at least one of those things it.

Have been kind of off my diet but still lifting...just need to mentally get myself right to get back on my cut.

I guess mental fatigue with a cut sets in after awhile...plus it's end of summer so there's too many things going on to avoid cheating.

Glad I don't have girls like you all are talking about at my gym. I go to Gold's and it seem like pretty much all the girls barbell squat now. In their Yoga pants. At least if I gotta wait for one of the squat racks, it gives me something nice to look at. I try not to make it obvious or creepy lol.

This happened to me during BBB DLs, I had a headache for 3 days. I attributed it to breathing/pushing wrong. I actually "heard" my pulse in my head (sounded like base from a song, lol). Glad I didn't blow a vessle in my brain, lol.

(this is assuming the pain is in your head)

I guess that's true if you're buying boxed crap. Shop the fresh food though and it's a non-issue.

I used to get exertion (i think) headaches when I would squat. Pain would seem to start from the back of my head at the base and then overwhelm me. I also think it was from breathing wrong or something but it hasn't happened in months. I hope they never come back.

Yeah, I just got careless that day, and paid for it.

How are you supposed to spot someone who is squatting? As in if he fails where do I put my hands in order to help him out with the weight?

You need 2 spotters to do it correctly, otherwise don't. Let them dump the bar.

Ok, mind you we're talking about baby-weights right now, friday is going to be my 1st official squat day. So I guess weights in the region of...hmph... 150 ish lbs tops.

Sounds like the exact same thing. Will give it a bit of time before I worry then.

Thanks!

Well "baby weights" you can get behind them and if they look like they are going to fail put your arms under their armpits (hooked around) so you can help them up.

Still, it's better to have safety pins up and let them dump it.

No problem, it sucked for those 3 days, I just took some ibuprofen and relaxed.

I don't think I'm going heavy on weights, I definitely have been doing "squats" more and as for water I drink a over half a gallon a day.

trying to watch what I eat, I take in about 1800 cals a day maybe 2000 max.
With about 120 grams of protien on average.

Ah knew I was missing something, yeah we don't have that in my crappy gym. The squat "rack" is just a bench rack basically, but I hear ya better to let him drop it if it reaches that point.

My gf currently squats so light (for me) that I just stand behind her and if she can't get it up I'll grab the bar and help her lift it.

It really isn't.. perhaps if you can get RAW milk.. but pasturization really kills anything in it that is good for you, and good 'ol homogonization is for shelf life.. in short, a dead, garbage product.

Uhh it doesn't kill the protein. It might kill some micronutrients but that would be about it.

Is it just the fact that milk is processed that you think it's bad?

What's your weight? Also, I'd encourage you to start counting exact calories and such with something like MyFitnessPal if you're looking to lose weight. You may be surprised at the little things that you eat that add up. I was. I'm a lot less apt to eat something if it's going to put me over my limit if I have to log it.

don't always judge by the scale. Use a tape measure. could be various things.. what is your diet like?

Mid morning snack greek yougert.
Lunch cauliflower, a slice of meatloaf and a quinoa salad (Boost Protein shake, yea I know too much sugar).
Prob have an apple and a think thin 20g protien bar at 4.
-Gym-
Dinner will prob be chicken breast with baked sweet potato and a whey protien shake w/ almond milk.

I use my fitness pal that's how I know the range.
Maybe I need to start weighing stuff.
I def know I need to start getting more cardio in.
Byt my damn legs are usually so tired from squats Mon-Wed-Fri to get cardio in on Tues-Thurs.

Been on starting strength since June and joined a blak iron gym and I've really made progress compared to when I was at nysc doing my own routine.
Right now my numbers are at:
Squats-220lbs
Bench-135lbs
Overhead press-105lbs
Deadlift-255lbs
Power cleans- still working on my form
Chins-3 to 4

I'm really upset that I some of my favorite khakis are really tight around the thighs now:(

Oh and since the beginning of the year I've gained 20 lbs by doing gomad and another 10lbs when I incorporated lifting.

And to jump in on the sweating topic, I sweat like a beast and I'm only 180lbs.

How are you supposed to spot someone who is squatting? As in if he fails where do I put my hands in order to help him out with the weight?

You can place your hands just below their armpits on their rib cage (don't squeeze too hard obv) and provide them enough upward assistance.

Your diet sounds pretty good, may need to just hang in there and start taking measurements if you're not already. If you're eating right and working out, you'll eventually start to see differences in measurements and on the scale.

New fitness milestone for me! Just ran 8 miles in exactly an hour and 15 minutes.

Considering I only began running a few months ago, and my previous best and longest run was only 6 miles in an hour and 5 minutes, I'm beyond stoked.

I totally feel ready for the 8 mile Spartan obstacle course race that I'm doing in 2 weeks.

I buy vegetables from local farmers currently, and my wife and I plan on growing our own soon... And I buy organic, grass fed beef. Many things today, are unfortunately what I call "damage control" since man wants to screw with everything and try and "improve it".
As far as milk, many nutrients and immune-enhancing components are destroyed by exposure to high heat and the temperatures used during pasteurization. Vitamin A is degraded, proteins and enzymes are denatured, and immunoglobulins are destroyed.
I used to drink milk like it was going out of style. I began to produce ridiculous amounts of mucus, and my joints developed severe pain, in addition to walking around feeling as if I was in a fog. I took milk out of the mix, and I feel 100% better. all they symptoms I had are gone.

I do a 5-3-1 split that is similar, except that I can't do squats and deads on the same day. I've tried it, way too much per workout for me. Whichever lift I do second always suffers, so I split those two up onto separate days.

With big compound lifts like those, if I do them once per week, but make that once a good solid workout, then I'm good to go.
