I guess that's true if you're buying boxed crap. Shop the fresh food though and it's a non-issue.

Dude even things like bread and tortillas contain: Soy, high fructose corn syrup, and Hydrogenated oils. And I'm not taking about generic white bread, these are breads/tortillas being marketed as "healthy" "100% whole wheat" etc.

Are you telling me you don't eat bread at all? If you don't more power to you, but like 99% of people do. And don't even get me started on cereal, granola bars, and things of that nature.

I haven't had store/bakery bought bread in like 3 years.. >.>

But I get what you mean, it's fairly hard to keep every "bad" thing out of your body.

So first day of aquatic fitness class where we actually swam... and HOLY SHIT swimming is HARD. I am the slowest in the class, but that's okay... just means I'll be the most improved by the end of the semester. Feels good... Feels like the first couple days I started working out all over again, I am excited to get way better and crush lengths like I crush weights.

Too true. Pretty much makes you lose hope in humanity when things like tyson chicken nuggets are marketed as "good for you".. same with cereals and such. "Good source of Vitamins! 100% whole wheat/grains"..
And places like lone star making it sound like GRAIN fed cows is a good thing doesn't help.

Ok, mind you we're talking about baby-weights right now, friday is going to be my 1st official squat day. So I guess weights in the region of...hmph... 150 ish lbs tops.

If 150 is baby weight then I am a huge wimp even after 2.5 weeks of squats. I just did 155 for the first time yesterday. Take it slow, unless by "official" you mean you know what you can do, but just haven't done them in a while.

Nah I was just messing about throwing around some random number didn't mean any offence . I've never done squats but I've done leg presses ( I know I know they're worlds apart but still ) for a while.

Nah, I'm not offended, just don't want you to get hurt trying to do too much weight. I have self-admitted to just not being very good at squats. I have balance issues, and it can get a bit intimidating to get stuck down there. I slipped once and dropped the bar, and the safety bars catching it actually gave me a lot of confidence to push myself a bit more as I increase weight slowly over time.

Cheers man, will keep that in mind and go for the safe route, will try it out with the empty bar and see where I go from there :)

So where do you get your bread from? (assuming you do eat bread) do you make it yourself?

I don't eat bread, but I do make my own pizza crusts and tortillas and such with a bread maker, yep. Can control all ingredients that way.

I did squats for the first time since high school(over 10 years now) last Saturday. I was too afraid to put 45's on the bar, so I put two 35's and did 3 sets of 8. It was very hard and tiring on my entire body. The thing is I never did squats correctly in high school. Whenever we though we were doing them, all we did was bend down maybe 4-5 inches instead of having our asses 4-5 inches off the ground. But anyways that was my first legs day as I did leg presses, dead lift, and a few other leg exercises. I'm still sore from it even after 5 days, but it feels good.

But I am on a cut(basically a get ripped plan), so I don't know if I can make much progress but I'll still keep at it to lean out my body if anything.

Did rack pulls for the first time today, not sure how I feel about them. Ended with 630 just to see how high I could get, but stopped there so I could move on. I'm sure I could have done at least 650 for one, but I'll probably start doing those at 550+ for reps and see how it goes.

I honestly "feel" them more than deadlifts but I dunno.. maybe not for everyone.

I really don't eat bread for the most part. I'm diabetic and stick to lower glycemic index carbs like rice and sweet potatoes. More satisfying and better for you.

Hey, Petrie, look at this.

lol, they really need to fix how much rackpulls give.

kind of happy when I see the difference, but then I realize I actually haven't gained any weight in muscle, I've only gone from flabby to solid-ish.

contrary to most, I do admit that I have neglected my arms a bit... but I am aware and have added bicep exercises in the last weeks. Getting to do a series of pull-ups was a damn challenge, it took a while until I could do 8-10 without feeling my arms being torn to pieces.

and I feel like I am spamming, I promise to wait at least 3 months from now for another before/after update :p

Excellent progress. Why do you say you haven't gained muscle, did your lifts not get any stronger?

Those results look damn good for the time frame. Do you mean you still weigh about the same as before you started? I wouldn't worry about that. You have obvioously put on some muscle to replace flab. I'm about three weeks in, up slightly in weight myself. No before /after pics, though. And any physical progress has been too deliberate for me too have noticed.

My progress has instead been measured by increasing weights. As for flab, I went from 220 to 170ish, and that is where I started my program. Now I'm at 174, plus or minus. Diet the same except I eat a lot on lift days, because I seem to run out of energy.

Think I pulled my groin a bit doing squats today. May have been because of those dumb groin stretches I did on Monday...my groin hurt a bit that night after doing those stretches.

I guess I might need to lay off the squats for a week or two to give it a rest.

And yeah, I did do a small warm up beforehand...5 minute light jog, body squats, and then a warm up set with light weights. Only had issues after the second set.

Just a heads-up: Kelly Starrett of MobilityWOD is coming out with a book pretty soon. Stupid title, "Becoming a Supple Leopard", but if the contents are as useful as his videos, it should be a great resource. His videos have helped me a lot with opening up my stiff hips, making me able to squat better and safer. I'll definitely get this book sometime down the line.

I'm not sure if what I'm feeling is just extra flab or loose skin... I don't really want to burn gas and drive to the school's gym, but I can't help but feel that I need to build more muscle to counter this unappealing visual.

Anyway... the elliptical is going well. My knee felt great afterwards, and that was after a terribly unpleasant day on campus (there is no avoiding going on declines or downstairs because our whole school is built on a series of hills). At the very least, I've definitely been working up a sweat.

I haven't gone to the gym in a week, as I've been really busy lately, and I think I've lost like several pounds in muscles o_O
Or maybe it's just random weight fluctuation, but I've gone from 70.1-3 to 68.7-9 kg.

first of all, be consistent and make every session count. If you workout 4 out of 7 days, give your best in every move. It's recommended to workout 6/7 days but what really counts is trying your hardest when you do work out instead of doing your stuff carelessly/half-assed or without much effort every day of the week.

other than that, Push-ups (~150 9 variations, including Burpees with jump: this move is the real deal), Pull-ups (~50 but working on more strength to do more), Ab exercises (lots of those motherfuckers.. 350, 8 variations), pistol squats (<3 them, ~30, each leg x 2, 7/8 reps), planks, mmhh... what else? 30 minutes cardio, just jogging in the park.

Excellent progress. Why do you say you haven't gained muscle, did your lifts not get any stronger?

well I was about 143 pounds when I started everything and now I am 136 (5'4 tall), which is the lowest I've been in.. like in 15 years.... I thought that meant that I lost fat and flab but didn't gain that back in form of muscle. It's strange because I have other private pics where I definitely look "bigger" or bulkier than before yet I weight the lowest ever.. don't know.

I don't do lifts, it's all bodyweight as you can see. Occasionally I use the equipment that I have available but It's so light on weight that I barely count it in my work out.

I weight a bit less :(...I don't do diet because I fear i'll look wasted (and when I see 136, I do think "damn, fuck"). I don't want to eat grilled chicken with greens like my other fit friends all the time because I burn everything like crazy so I eat everything I want and can, even though I know what's generally considered better or worse for the body. I think I am in the perfect time to begin using supplements and protein shakes and the likes.. but I have to investigate on that, either with friends in the know or a nutritionist.

and congrats on those numbers!

1.5 kilograms is exactly the weight you get after having a normal meal..or the weight you lose when you go to the bathroom...

I would't read much into it, unless you checked your weight in the exact same circumstances and even then, 1.5 kg is nothing, you'll see a 70.~ next time you check your weight

Almost entirely water and maybe a little fat, virtually no muscle lost in a week.

Today I ate...

Oatmeal
Protein Shake
Cup of Almonds
String Cheese
2 Turkey Burgers on Whole Wheat Flats

I think I'm at like 80g of carbs. Kinda high but whatever. Think I might have eggs soon as a snack and then another shake.

Is that a pretty good day? I can't go grocery shopping until tomorrow. What should I get? I'm living on my own now and trying to eat low carb and healthy. Figure I'll get a shit load of chicken, some frozen veggies, avocado, spaghetti squash, etc. Looking to lose another 10 pounds.

I've noticed that ever since I've started working out, even though I put on a lot of weight and I'm sure a lot of it is fat, my body just feels harder. Like my obliques feel like they're flexed all the time, same for my quads. Feels awesome!

How long are your cutting/bulking cycles? I had originally planned to bulk August to Feb 2013 and then cut until I'm satisfied basically. I'm having second thoughts now and am thinking about bulking until November/December, cutting until I'm satisfied and ready to bulk again. It's just an idea that popped in my head because I want to be even lighter than I am right now. Even though I've lost over 70lbs this year I want to lose some more fat. I haven't discussed it with my brother yet (I get most of my lifting advice from him) but I just wanted to poll you guys and see what each of you are doing. Thanks.

Last week I could barely do 65lbs barbell standing OHP, and today I was able to do 45lb dumbbell seated OHP...what?

The only thing I can think of is that the bench is ever so slightly reclined (by maybe 5 degrees). Hard to think it could make that big of a difference.

Seated is easier than standing, as you have the seat to support your torso. In addition, I'm assuming by your weight that you're new to weight training. Due to this, your motor recruitment pathways for your muscles are untrained and staring resistance training will cause then to improve quickly for a short period of time. The more efficiently your body can move its muscles the more you will be able to lift, up until a point.

These pictures are about 5 years old:

I was about 170 in the "before" which isn't even the REAL before it was after 1 month of progress (started at about 180)
5-19-08.jpg

And about 155 in the "after"
07-29-08.jpg

This time around I know a hell of a lot more than I knew then. I started at 199lbs (and a higher bf% than in the before pic up there, getting older and working in an office is no bueno). I'm 193ish lbs right now and when I'm done with my cut I'll be about 188-189 of solid muscle.
I really wish I had taken a new "Before" picture this time around, I think people would be blown away by the progress you can make in 2-3 months.

Proper diet and nutrition > Slow metabolism and years of bad habits.

WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO US SEAN

I tried, but of course he wouldn't respond to me.

Seriously, I get what guy is saying, I really fucking do, and it's not that he's wrong about insulin, it's that saying "exercise has little affect on weight loss" is so factually wrong that I could cry somebody would read what he says and believe it since he sounds smart.

Of course, he's getting the fructose/sucrose stuff mixed up with the insulin and carb stuff to where I'm not even sure he knows what he's typing at this point.
