So I feel that I've been dieting well, I run about 11 minutes before lifting weights 3 times a day, following the beginners routine in the OP. My body is starting to see results after about 2 months of sticking with it but there's one area that seems to be lagging behind - my abs. I still got a good pudge. What's the best way to burn this fat off? I'm thinking of running 5 times a week instead of 3. Maybe run even more if it's ok for a beginner.

Less shit food (or food in general), more activity (cardio, sex, whatever).

Best youtube comment:
damnit just get 20 lbs something from the racks.

I'm sure you've heard this, but you can't spot reduce fat.

You can diet hard (there are a few options) to try and get rid of the body fat or you can work out to increase muscle mass to carry it better.

If you're making progress and not eating shitty food, I'd stick to that for a while until you really hit a point where you have to lose the weight. Also, don't eat table sugar or HFCS. Fucks with your system. Stick to carbs from milk, bread, or rice. Read packaging before you buy it.

I was (still am, kind of) in the same situation, I asked the same question some weeks back.

What veezy says is really true, you can't spot reduce the fat (or you shouldn't.. anyway).

Try to do different aerobic stuff for your whole body, (at least your upper body), do flexing, do decent cardio and if you think you are in the right weight, do abs.

I have recommened this a couple of times but I'll put it again here.

ABS 8 MINUTE WORKOUT

Been using it for 3 months and it really helps... A LOT.

I too can vouch for training a gf. She told me that I come at her like a trainer and not as a bf. I try to be more bf like but it is hard. Agreed with the rest of you. Just let her do her own thing lol.

I did cleans before deads today. 3x10 @ 135. I was fucking exhausted and it most definitely impacted my deadlift workout. It is just going to be a matter of what I want to put a priority on and that is gonna be cleans so my deadlift will suffer a bit.

Weighed myself this morning and am at 225. Measured myself and arms at 16 inches. Huzzah! Let's see if I can hit 18 by summer of next year =)

Oh, beastmode is out of this thread? Yay! I can read it again!

Veezy posted this link in.. that other thread that was about some days ago - I found it to be a fantastic lecture on how fructose is not good at all. I learnt a lot about the metabolic system, and it also gave me the urge never to eat sugar again, so it was very interesting:

I'll be well over 200g of sugar for today from liquids alone.

1L apple juice - 120
2L milk - 88
1 can Cherry Dr Pepper 67

Here's what's the gist of the video.

There are different types of sugar. The "bad" sugar is fructose.

Fructose is predominantly in HFCS and table sugar (sucrose, half glucose half fructose). Your body has to digest it primarily with the liver, similar to alcohol or another poison. Due to that, it's really bad for your VLDL, like alcohol, and isn't good for you overall.

Long story short not all "sugar" is made the same (for example, milk and pure glucose aren't really gonna hurt you at all). Stay away from anything that's simply "sugar" or "HFCS" and you'll be good to go.

The reason why juice is worse for you than like an apple is the ease of consumption. You're not likely to eat the same amount of apples that would equal the amount of juice you would drink. If you're healthy and you work out it's not too big of a deal, but if you're overweight or obese, eating foods with a lot of sugar, in addition to a low fiber diet (which most Americas have) will be hell on your system.

Like Alien can take down 20oz of soda and not effect him 'cause he trains so hard that the impact to his VLDLs is negligible. However, a bigger person who's sedentary not only already has bad habits, but that type of sugar just compounds the issue.

EDIT: This, primarily, is why anti-carb diets can something to stray away from if you're either not under the care of a physican or not already in shape (in my opinion, do whatever THE FUCK you wanna do!). Carbs are in veggies, fruits, whole wheat bread, etc. You know what else is in carby food? Fiber. Ya know what happens you don't have enough fiber? Heart disease, colon cancer, DIABETES. YOU KNOW WHO GETS DIABETES AND DOESN'T EAT ENOUGH FIBER AND HAS A LOT OF SUGAR IN THEIR DIET INCREASE CHOLESTEROL AND SHOULD PROBABLY STRAY AWAY FROM A DIET INCREDIBLY LOW IN FIBER TO LOSE WEIGHT WITHOUT A DOCTOR'S PERMISSION?

He posted that because he's not concerned because of exactly what you posted at the bottom Veezy. MTP trains hard and is one of the stronger guys here. I'm pretty sure you know that though, and are trying to get some good info out anyway.

Wait, you only run 11 minutes 3 times a week? 10 minutes of jogging is my warmup before I even stretch. As always, I'm gonna advocate HIIT. 12 sets, 1 min run-so-fast-you-think-you're-gonna-die - 1:30 minutes of jogging so you can get ready for another 1 minuter. Incredible way of doing cardio.

Half a 14" pizza, half a roast beef sandwich, 8oz almonds and two beers for dinner. Sorry to disappoint you bulkGAF, but I couldn't finish the pizza. Leftovers will go towards breaking my fast tomorrow.

My son pays way too much attention to what I do. He was just using a cardboard tube to "foam roll" his legs, because they are "sore."

That was pretty damned cute.
That would just be downright adorable. Brought a smile to my face.

Do HIIT twice a week. Combine it with a long distance run (5-6+miles) and two short runs (2-4miles). Never do HIIT sessions in a row.

It's a sunny Sunday and I spent some time right now on the lawn trying to learn how to backflip. Mental block is preventing me from actually taking a proper plunge. Will have learnt it before October.

So, I'm going to do something stupid, but fun, maybe.

Unfortunately, I have zero transportation to an actual gym due to my future wife's job. So, my only option for workout out is the condo "fitness room" (say it out loud, try not to cringe). This "fitness room" contains the following:

Two elliptical, two stationary seated bikes, and two treadmills

Dumbbells ranging from 8lbs up to 45lbs
Cable preacher curl machine with rope tricep extension attached
Dual lying hamstring curl and leg extension machine (worst design ever)
Adjustable bench press up to incline press up to seated shoulder press machine
Wide grip pull down with seated row attached machine
Nearby, outside, is a playground. However, it's fucking hot here in Vegas so outside kinda sucks.

I'll only have this center to use for a quick minute, so if somebody wants to throw together a hellish circuit to have me try out that you like doing, I'll do it. I'm kinda screwed out of training strength for a minute, might as well punish myself another way.

Back when I used to go clubbing I had a friend I would go out with that was learning to flip to help with his dance moves (nimble bastard, I had to stick to popping, krumping, and siding). Anyways, what he did was work out using himself out of a bridge, then falling back into a bridge, and finally into the flip. Crash pads helped.

Help me understand this please, English is not my native language. With a bridge in this case you mean a heightened platform or something he put his back and weight on or is it a gymnastic movement?

Calm down bro. Low carb diets don't count fiber as carbs. You are encouraged to eat a ton of fiber and fibrous veggies.

Basically, yeah. Think about going from a high surface to a low surface. He would lay on his back, reach down from the high surface, and kick him self over. Just to practice the balance of it. He would try to go from shorter heights to where he could just make a bridge on the ground and kick himself over.

Eventually, he would practice back hand springs, kinda, on a crash pad. Falling backwards onto his hands and kicking over. Since he got the balance down from before, this process didn't take to long. Eventually he went into back hand springs, then finally standing back flips.

I'd be careful though when you practice to make sure you have padding. Messing up a back flip can be fatal.

@blackflag - I'm aware. Unfortunately, people read "low-carb," hit the super market, and don't understand you need more in your diet than meat and canola oil. See criticism or the Atkins diet for more information.

EDIT: To be clear, I'm not entirely sure if this is the best way to learn a back flip, it's just how he did it. I'm confident a gymnastic instructor could do a bit better!

Thanks. Seems logical to learn back hand flips first. I just tried to brute myself directly into backflips.

I was able to do no-hands backflips on the grass or soft surfaces when I was like 18, the best preparation for it was definitely using a trampoline to get used to the move and more importantly, get some spring... and even then, I never lost the fear of hitting my head or neck.... respect to all gymnasts of the world.

Just got a set of medium Rehband knee sleeves, shit's expensive as hell, but from what I hear they are very high quality. Can't wait till they arrive, early Christmas present for me!

For those interested.

I don't know why I feel guilty buying myself fitness stuff, then again I've always had a strange guilt spending money on myself. I really want a nice weighted vest, but they're SO expensive. $300+ for the one I'd like.

Took me months and a nice sale to convince myself to buy the belt I wanted though, so this'll take awhile.

Yeah, I feel bad when I do too, probably because of how expensive it is, but if you buy the right shit, it should last a very long time. Still, I get what you mean, and these knee sleeves (77 dollars for the set) are supposed to be very, very high quality. This ended up being an early Christmas present.

As for a weighted vest, what do you want it for? I'd have a hard time rationalizing getting a weighted vest.

regarding 5/3/1, two questions :

1) When does one up the weights? Week 5? edit : yea week 5.
2) What do they mean with this "Remember that you're calculating percentages based on 90% of your current 1RM in each lift, not from the actual 1RM." ?

You should get the book.

1. After your deload week, if you're using a template with a deload week.

2. Exactly what it sounds like. Find your 1rm either actual 1rm or estimated 1rm, then make a training max based off of 90% of that.

That phrasing makes me a bit confused, is it simply 90% of your 1RM or 90% of your 90%? Yeah I'm gonna get the book as well :)

edit : let me rephrase that assume my 1RM is 200 lbs in w/e, when you're doing :

"Set 1 65% x 5"

is that 5x 65% of 200 lbs OR is that 65% of 90% of 200lbs?

Dude, I just answered your question.

90% of your 1 rep max.

Multiply your 1 rep max by .9 that gives you your training max.

Everything is based off of training max, otherwise, why bother making a training max.

Rotater Cuff Question. I have some pain in my right shoulder and have been stretching and doing various exercises for it. I have no pain at all when I'm not lifting, just some stiffness. Today, after an hour long swim, both shoulders were clicking when I rotated them.

Take time off? Stretch more? tell me what the solution is?

Also, does anybody else have trouble taking a rest day? With running, swimming, biking, and lifting all a priority, I have trouble finding enough time. Throw in tennis and now either soccer or rugby, I'm not sure when I can take a day off.

Are you doing external rotations? I swear by these for rotator cuff. I used to have right shoulder issues and now I have no issues at all.

Ok thanks, it was clumsily phrased is all but I got it now.

It's really not, but ok.

Hahaha I just made my own pizza. Whole wheat Bobolo pie. Serving of tomato sauce. 4 servings of low fat mixed cheeses. 28.6 oz of grilled chicken breast. Comes to about 2000 calories with a little more than 200g of protein. Just ate half. Gonna go lift soon and then eat the other half tonight. Will have room for a snack too.

One more week and it will be 4 weeks on this bulk since getting off keto. Gonna take some posing pics and see how I did. Definitely put on a bunch of water weight, I can see it in my face. I know I put on some muscle though because I've been getting stronger for sure.

Yay, lost two pounds and my arms are visibly larger. Slowly making progress... but then... i will have to go on a work related trip, and i'll be out from tomorrow up until september 28th. That's gonna fuck up my diet, but have to make sure i won't eat bad.

Not going to the gym for all these days will suck :(

Just when things were starting to get better.

God, I'm a huge pussy when it comes to trying to backflip without a spotter.

So the Runner's Knee issue is slowly improving, as I've been doing 30 minutes of elliptical cardio (with pretty decent intensity) for the past week or so. Stretching helps it too. We'll see how things go once school and the monastery-like series of staircases come into play, though.

There was something I did want to mention here, though. I decided for this month, I'm going to give intermittent fasting a try, in the efforts of breaking my current plateau. I know that IF isn't a magic bullet and you still have to eat clean as hell and work out hard, but I've been stuck at 230 for a while; and I never got below 222 even when I was cutting super hardcore. I'd like to see if constraining and altering my eating habits may yield some new results.

Any advice? I won't stop doing cardio because I need to improve my mile time (and I need to prepare my body for that); but weight training just gives me a fucking ridiculous appetite. Has anyone here had good success with only doing cardio for a cut, or is weight training necessary to not have nasty loose skin?

conditioning. I prefer walking 2-4 miles every morning, and increasing my weight with a vest would make it much more effective. don't want to use a backpack with weights or something.

Sounds tasty! I had a Greek or Mediterranean pizza from a pub. Good stuff, but not as good as homemade gets.

My wife has already noticed my effort to eat more. She noted when I was working on my second chicken breast after having had a 3/4 pound hamburger and salad that I had a look that what I was doing was work.

I may have to kick it up a notch later, but I'm hitting 3,500 - 4,000 calories. No need to go crazy this early in the game.

Gonna have to take a week off squatting. My groin muscles were quite tender after my last workout (sharp pains if I moved the wrong way) due to squats. Thought it was healed up now but my right groin muscle was in pain again today while golfing.

What should I do instead? I'm doing Starting Strength. Also, how do I prevent this injury in the future? I don't have a proper squat coach so I can't really get a critique on my form. I currently do high bar squats because of extreme lack of shoulder flexibility.
