I tried to read the Pediatrics study that the article is citing, but the link was broken.

Still, the article reads like typical "look what crazy/dangerous behavior kids are doing NOW" garbage. The attempted hysteria over protein supplements is especially interesting, as the article states the danger associated with protein supplements is when they're used in lieu of real food, but the survey from Pediatrics seems to just ask if respondents used the supplement at all. It's silly.

A good friend of mine snorted a line of creatine before a gym session once. He saw gains immediately, there wasn't enough plates in the entire gym to satisfy him. He started eating raw meat for max gains. He beat his girlfriend within an inch of her life for mistakenly bringing soy protein home instead of whey. I decided to intervene one day and stop him from his creatine abusing ways. I found his body laid out on the kitchen floor with a resistance band tied around his bicep, a spoon and tons of creatine. That was 2 years ago, he's still in a creatine induced coma.

Creatine, not even once.

An "old wives' tale" may suggest teens who lift weights and bulk up may stunt their growth. The American Academy of Pediatrics says that could definitely happen if an adolescent injures the bone's growth plate. Other injuries include herniated disks in the back, muscle strains and tears, bone fractures and cartilage damage.
Injury you say? Kinda like something that can happen with any sport? Running? Walking? Jumping? Moving?

Thank god for the media saving us.

I can't believe they grouped in protein powder with steroids.

Never change, media.

I've seen a few reports on TV here talking about the surge in people taking protein powders like it's some weird/dangerous shit. It's just fucking protein. It can be hard to get 1-1.5 grams of protein per body pound just from food, protein powder is just an easier way to get protein in your diet, nothing more.

Protein powder: workout supplement, or dangerous new gateway drug?

Can muscle density really be improved, and, if so, does it explain why relatively smaller lifters can lift more weight than guys that appear to have considerably more muscle mass?

Well there is this whole myofibrillar versus sarcoplasmic thing, where the idea is that by pumping huge volume with lighter weights, your body will swell the non-contractile part of the muscle and increase glycogen stores, but it doesn't lift as heavy in lower rep ranges.

Science is shaky on it, and the difference may not be very large regardless of training methodology.

What does happen is you get neural improvements from lifting heavy shit, and if you lift in lower rep ranges often or challenge the muscle tissue you have (or are just lucky), then you can lift more weight with the same amount of muscle. Your proportions also play a big role; a guy with short arms benches more than a guy with long arms, and a guy with long arms deadlifts more.

Lastly, you can get differences in apparent muscle size due to fat distribution. The leaner guy may look smaller than the bigger guy, but actually have more muscle.

Has anyone here tried "carb backloading" ?
I'm 3 days into low carb and I already hate the world.

If I follow the outline, I have to stay super low carb for 7 more days and then its HELLO PASTA TIME again (rice pasta).
I'm not sure if its even worth it, I lift a couple of times a week but I care more about strength and performance then a six pack.

Yup just basically want to see my lower abs. They're slightly visible but theres a roll there.

Lol didnt see that one. Yes im 73kg. Im not the Hulk in any way shape or form.

Ill post my current progress: http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e183/kingwoods/Results-2.gif (About a year of progress here)
You're a good size, looking solid and it sounds like your shit is together. Your pictures, training, and actual weight make a big difference in the advice you need, lol! Since stubborn body fat is the issue, I would also recommend you try the intermittent fasting protocol of your choice. Read up on what despire posted a bit, ask questions if you can. I've been fasting every day in some manner for years now, even if at my current juncture I'm usually fasting for 14 hours or less instead of 16-18 hours. I'm not sure if that's even fasting or just "not eating breakfast" at this point.

Take your time. With the discipline you probably have I'm sure you can get rid of the lower abdominal fat. While losing weight is awesome you're at a stage where your goal is to lose fat. That's more awesome for you right now. Stick to it and don't lose sight of that.

The middle east has this stuff they use instead of ketsup made out of dates, it's amazing. I wanna say it's called Fahq sauce or something like that. I think it was Turkish. It was all over the place when I was in Mosul, Iraq.

Didn't even read it but anything that says "4 Weeks to Maximum Muscle" or around those lines is probably full of shit.

...

Umm, bench press sets of 30 reps, leg press sets of 50 reps, curling sets of 40 reps.. wat

My advice is to stay the fuck away from that routine (and probably any routine you find in BB.com).

It's taking untrained people and making them do shit regularly for a month. You can give a sedentary person any routine for a month and they will get stronger just cuz they are doing something.

That page is ridiculous. Feeding off ignorance and encouraging faddish temporary workout habits. Most people who sign up for those types of programs will pay a lot to do something for a month and then go back to doing nothing.

Starting january 2 the gym will be full of those people. :lol

I watched the documentary 'I want to look like that guy' last night and it was pretty damn good (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKLY9HfNrT8).

The guys transformation is really incredible considering it was done over 6 months..

tumblr_lp7prk39Q81qdcvmc.jpg

And how did he do it? Heavy lifting (if you notice, all reps are done in the 4-6 range), cardio and strict diet control. No weird fad diets or gimmicky workout routines.

Definitely worth a watch.

That dude practically starves himself though. Made him suffer from depression and really stressed him out. It was definitely a good watch though.

Yeah, for sure.

But it's important to remember that he was on a tight deadline to be in shape for a bodybuilding show. He was eating something like 1,400 calories a day by the end of it - definitely not sustainable.

For the rest of us, we have time on our side so we don't have to use crazy starvation diets or anything like that. He dropped 50lbs in 6 months; 1lb a week should be more than doable for the majority of us.

But the whole transformation was done in 2 years and I'm quite sure he wasn't really new to the gym (was a long time since i saw the movie).

is there any proof that it took 2 years or is that your appreciation?

I suspect there's a lot of BS in that story but regardless, the effort, the discipline and many things the gym owner says, that's interesting. That is something worth looking at and inspiring, to me at least.

My friend wants to try out Kris Gethin's DTP workout with me:

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/kris-gethin-dtp-4-weeks-to-maximum-muscle.html

Has anybody tried this? 50 reps seems a little much.

I think my roommates ended up trying it and they used to rave about it for the first 2 and half or 3 weeks, after that I never heard about it again lol. I'm going to agree with the opinion that those types of works that claim 'build max muscle in a short amount of time' might not be a very good workout.

I mean thats a crazy amount of volume

So what's the general consensus on ATG squats?

It seems like they put less stress on my lower back, so that's why I've been doing them as opposed to powerlifting squats (parallel). I know I can't lift as heavy going ATG, but are they beneficial in any way?

Of course they are - longer range of motion increases muscle recruitment. Just look at how easy olympic lifters squat huge amounts and tell me there is no benefit to ATG high bar squatting.

Just make sure you have the flexibility to go ATG without rounding your lower back.

Don't they put greater emphasis on the quads?

I prefer parallel because it works the glutes more. All about the glutes.

That's right brotha.

I was walking back from lunch one day, and some women screamed at me from their car, "Nice ass!"

Thanks BBB low-bar squats!

Nice. While I haven't had that happen, there have been plenty of times where I am out and about I get the random booty squeeze.

And thanks to you, I was debating BBB deads or squats for today.

Squats it is.

As long as you're getting below parallel I think you're good. Low bar I get to an inch or two below parallel, high bar I go a bit deeper just naturally.

How much more does it work the glutes? I mean I squat 3x a week and go ATG every time and I got dat dere squat booty

ugh, don't remind me. Jan/Feb last year were awful.

Honestly I used to think the same way but it's kind of a self centered look at it - now I just appreciate the fact that people are exercising. Plus it helps keep gym membership cost low ;)

When I do ATG, I certainly feel the glutes getting worked, but I definitely feel it more with low-bar squats. For me the difference is equivalent to the differences felt between a wide grip and close grip bench.

From the official site:

"What does it really take to become ripped like a bodybuilder? I Want To Look Like That Guy answers the question by following filmmaker Stuart MacDonald through 2 years of training. The last 6 months tests the limits of his mind, body, family and friends as they watch him trim down from 30% body fat to under 6% body fat. "

Prolly took a lot of work, but i found the time aspect a bit missleading but in any case awesome work.

I start a bootcamp saturday , basiclly involves eating foods from a list and doing a 30 minute workout once a day. im 11 stone but could do with a tone up so it should help me , must stick to it but should be hard as i start 4 12 hour shifts on saturday and i work near a kicthen so i guess temptation and will power play a big part.
