Hey guys, I started working out back in august, started out skinny at 120 pounds annd am now 140. for a month and a half though my nipples have been very sore and i do fear i am suddenly developing gynecomastia. they are noticeably puffier and bigger. Ive never worked out before, could this be due to the extra testosterone? should i see a doctor or will it hopefully go away? thanks.

I'm not familiar with the subject but developing boobs because of testosterone sounds pretty weird. If it were so everyone with naturally high testosterone leves would be walking around with magnificent breasts.

Are you sure it's not just your chest muscles growing? If you really feel like something is wrong going to the doctor can't really hurt can it?

When you have an abundance of testosterone your body changes it to estrogen. This causes "bitch tits" in guys. This is the reason some people who abuse steroids develop boobs.

There's some enzyme in the body that converts a very tiny percentage of test into estrogen. It's called aromatase. It's low enough that you only notice it if you take roids, since a tiny fraction of "way the hell more test than normal" can come out to enough to have noticeable effects and give you gyno. It's also why it's normal for teenage boys to temporarily get gyno for a short period of time.

Ok. I know that taking roids can up your test levels so much that portion of it turns to estrogen and it becomes noticeable (=boobs).

But the dude's 19 though so I'd suspect he is well past "teenage boobs". Though not necessarily.. But what about adult males with naturally high levels of test? Do they still grow boobs?

What's the difference between sit ups and crunches?

Crunch:

There are a lot better abdominal exercises if that's what you want. Hanging leg raises and planks for example and let's not forget squats and deadlifts!

is it normal to have a lot more strength on triceps compared to biceps? I mean, like, A LOT more, not just slightly. or is it a genetic thing?

I lift several times more weight doing tricep exercises compared to bicep exercises...

Look at the size of them, triceps are a much larger muscle. Normal.

Anyone else in here have a baby, newborn or otherwise? Do they like to do their "It's 3 AM and I am AWAKE HOLD ME" thing EXCLUSIVELY on nights before a workout day? I know my 1 year old does :p

I have a two month old at home. He makes some noise, but thankfully doesn't bother me at night as much as he could. My wife is really good about not waking me when she gets up to take care of him, too. So far it's awesome.

7 month old. She was getting up for a few weeks but thankfully seems to be back to sleeping 10:00-6:30ish. Give or take. We think it was teething. Possibly ear infection. Hopefully we're through that now because I need my sleep.

Anyone take their kid to the gym? i took my 4 year old with me a week ago so he can see what I do and be exposed to the atmosphere. He always asks if I'm going to the gym and he's been there a couple of times but not recently. We practiced squats with a PVC pipe and he was content to sit and watch. He also got a lot of attention from friends there.

Usually when I go alone and I get home he runs to me... stops and asks "Daddy are you sweaty?" and when I say yeah he just high fives me instead of making me pick him up. Cute.

Grad school has kept me busy from commenting on this thread, but I see some things never change.

This made my day.

Form Form Form and eating right... I still stick to the old Marine Corps workout. Run 3 days a week, weights 5 days, and the occasional calisthenics. I still feel like I am in great shape but I see the most differences when I diet the correct way.

The standard 2,000 calorie daily diet is outdated and prescribed for a person who has a sedentary lifestyle. I am really active and I take in about 2400 calories. I'm not anutritionist though. It just works for me.

What do you weigh? I lose weight at anything less than 3k calories. That's with no cardio. Most people that lift heavy weights would need to eat more than 2,400 but I know everyone's body is different.

I fluctuate between 200 and 205. I'm 6'2", 29 yrs. old. I'm not a perfect model of Men's Fitness but when I go out to eat I eat what I want.

yes, I am aware, triceps compose 2/3 of the arm muscle, I knew that before asking and I knew it is reasonable to expect tricep workout to carry more weight than bicep workout but the difference in my capacity to lift comparing bicep to tricep is very, very big, that's why I wanted to check if that big a difference is normal or if my biceps are just too weak, (relative to the triceps).

From a calorie consumption baseline, here are my stats:

5'10
159lbs

2600 calories rest days
3100 calories workout days

Right now I'm clean bulking gaining maybe 1/4-1/8lb a week.

Another example that the 2,000 calroie diet is a terrible way monitor your eating habits. If your active thenyour depriving your body of fuel. The trick is to figure out what is good for you.

I don't know much about Bodybuilding but a lot of people seem to like Layne Norton's PHAT

You guys are lucky you have all that time to work out, keep taking advantage while it lasts! I barely manage 4 days a week for 5/3/1 BBB and that's only because I skip most of the warm-up (hasn't hurt me yet fortunately)

Re: baby: Wow that's a lot of sleep. Damn formula fed kids and their giant stomach capacities. Ours was breastfed only for most of the year and still gets more boob than solids, so he only sleeps about 4-5 hours at a clip and wakes up once or twice a night.

And yes, I have drank breastmilk post workout on more than one occasion. Don't tell the wife :D

Re: older kid: That is adorable. Have you lied and given him a big sweaty Goron hug?

Still natty, and thanks mate. I'm trying.

I have no clue wtf is up with my trainer. I'm supposed to "bulking" right now, but he's sort of dropped off the planet, every time I email him it takes a week for him to respond and I still don't have the second phase of my program. Really felt like a waste of money.

All that aside, my strength is also great. I hit 225x8 without a spot on incline last night. Should Hit x10 next week and will up the weight to 235. I need to start flatting again.

EDIT: Random thought, but I don't think I'm gonna ask bigger guys to spot me on bench lol. Last night I had the biggest guy I've seen there help me on incline, and I asked for a lift off on my last set. He picked up that shit like it was nothing, I didn't feel a thing getting into place.... Then I said "OK" and WHAM I nearly buckled under the sudden pressure, lol. Shit's dangerous.

We chatted throughout the night though, he was giving me huge props. Felt good. He's a friggin beast.

I switched to flat bench for my latest bulk, switching it up from my usual slight decline...

The pros? Strength went up, hit some personal bests.
The cons? At the end of the eight weeks, my right upper pec was all sorts of fucked up, so I'm out of commission for a few weeks.

I knew there was a reason I disliked flat bench. Bah.

are you supposed to use your biceps while squatting? my buddy said he does, to hold the bar on his back...i just said he needs to squeeze his upper back together and lean a little bit more forward.

You use every muscle you need to keep the bar in place on your back/traps and keep your back tight. So yea, probably use your biceps. Not consciously though.

Your arms are just supposed to be there as a brace. I don't even hook my thumb around the bar. Your back/traps should be holding the weight depending on if you are doing low or high bar.

Darth, I guess you can take this as a compliment but fuck I do not believe you're all natty. No fucking way.

Looking at him I have absolutely no problem believing he's natural.

Sounds like he's pulling the bar "in" instead of trying to pull it apart when racking the weight on his shoulders. IMO that's not optimal for scapular retraction.

Darth, I join the choir of compliments. Comparing your pics from 5 or 6 months ago to the ones you have posted recently (those that make a couple of guys nervous in the other thread, lol), your improvement is amazing.

Sad to hear your trainer is making himself unavailable, that sucks. Ask him to give you your money back.

and on another note. Wow, December is a great month to go to the gym, Monday and Tuesday are normally the busiest days and you have to fight and wait for equipment to be free. A couple of snowflakes and a bit of cold weather seemed to have kept people in their homes enjoying the fireplace or something. It's almost empty!! (not that I complain).

Bulking now? Didn't you just finish cutting to 185? Sucks that your coach seems unreliable. Does he have really good credentials? My ideal coach would be someone like Eric Helms or Tuan Tran. Looking great regardless!

Is it just me or is it hard to find any decent FAQ's about bodybuilding. I mean things like how one should proceed if he wants to add some BB stuff to his (strength) routine. I know there are routines everywhere but I mean general info and valuable little pieces of knowledge not often talked about.

Everyone knows that you should do higher reps and such but what about other stuff? What's the optimal rest time and what other things one should take into account if he wants to make maximal hypertrophy gains?

Would be awesome if someone would take some time and write a short FAQ of some sorts to the OP :)

Not only that but there's a lot of broscience out there and what works for one person isn't gonna work for another.

Here in the middle east the January crowded gym equivalent is Ramadan, the first day of last Ramadan my local gym was unbelievably crowded, every single treadmill/elliptical was in use. :lol

I not only hate the influx of new people come the new year, I also hate the one's that do some made up exercise with the equipment intended for actual workout routines. This also applies to people who have been lifting for a long time and are strong, big, or think they are pro. I am not an expert and make my share of mistakes but my philosophy is just because you can do it doesn't mean you should(squats on a fitness ball for example). I wish I could show pictures of some of the made up exercises and assembly of multiple equipment I have seen in the gym before.

I have to explain this one. there was this one big power lifting guy that would take up the squat rack. He would take 2 benches and somehow make a platform using the flat benches and the moveable side spot bar. He wedged them so he could lay on them and then got a heavy barbell and did leg curls on this. Same guy would always bring his gym bag the size of a fridge and keep it the gym area basically in the way of everyone. Add to that he also would come in with his heavy chains which he used when squatting and benching and all in all he was a douche.

My rant could go on and on about guys like him, newbies and newbie groups and all that comes with gyms. of course I will state again, I am no expert and I am sure I do things at times that need correcting.
