I'm currently at

120 OHP
262 DEADLIFT
346 SQUAT
185 BP

I've been going since early June and never did weight training before. I haven't been as serious as I would've liked and didn't follow any program at all the first four - ish months, so take that as you will.

Nice progress!

Your squat seems high relative to your other movements. Are you sure you're going to depth?

You just always have to remember that correlation does not equal causation. They could also tell you that they make sure they watch 5 hours of reality tv every night and it would be about as meaningful without any science behind it.

Exactly, and you also have to look at peoples individual situation. For instance, if those guys are on steroids, it probably makes sense to eat all day. In that situation, you can also drop your fat intake very low because you are getting your testosterone from an exogenous source. Basically, what works for others, won't necessarily work for you.

agreed.

sadly one of those guys seems to be on esteroids, we've become good friends and go out together and he has thrown the line "if you take what you have to take, you can put up XX ammount of weight in three months" ...and maybe my not so trained eye deceives me but he has a bit of a 'roid belly.. I don't want to ask him any further.

These numbers make no sense. Your squat shouldn't be almost 100lbs more than your Deadlift. What gives?
I'm pretty sure my squat form isn't ideal as I feel it in my quads today as opposed to my butt. Gonna work on that on Thursday with lower weight. I have pretty massive quads compared to the rest of my body though. I've always played drums and basketball since childhood so my legs developed real well.

Those activities won't develop the same strength as weight training though.

Take a video if you can, because realistically your numbers hint that there is something very wrong.

Or you could just be a genetic freak, who knows.

If your form is that bad though, you need to swallow your pride and drop the weight a ton, we're talking over 100lbs.

I'm dropping 100 for sure Thursday. I'm not putting pride over progress. My legs have always been big, but I can definitely concede that going below parallel is tough at that weight. I have long ass legs, so squatting to depth is something I need to actively work on.

I saw those numbers and legit rolled my eyes at the squats. And even OHP considering his bench is pretty low for a solid OHP like that.

For reference sake here's a picture showing my quads compared to the rest of my body. Again not huge, but I feel my legs definitely have the advantage over my upper body.

I dunno, my OHP has always been high compared to my bench, though I attribute that to carrying lots of heavy trays as a busboy/server.

Boner? Lol no.

But yea now you guys can see where I'm coming from. My legs are pretty well developed compared to the rest of my body so my leg exercise 1repmaxes will be considerably out of proportion in comparison. Maybe I'll do legs once a week instead of twice. I go three times a week and do bench / squat twice a week with DL and OHP on the middle day. Switching it would probably help, no?

Hey guys, been lurking this thread for awhile and I've received lots of good advice from both the OP and various posters. You guys help more people than you realize.

Anyway, starting my first real bulk phase today and shooting for a goal weight of 200LBS. That's a 15LB gain from where I'm at right now at 185LBS. For reference, I'm 6'3" and what I would consider moderately active (workout 5 times a week, sports once or twice a week).

Diet wise, I'm planning on taking in about 3700 calories a day and 250G of both protein and carbs. I'm hoping to reach my goal in 3 months. With the proper training regiment, does this seem like a reasonable timeframe? Thanks in advance.

and heeeeeeere we goooooooooo!

It isn't the legs alone that look "bad", it's them being attached to a body that doesn't suit them. Huge quads and not very well muscled anywhere else.

I disagree, the legs aren't too far out of whack. They're supposed to be the biggest muscles in your body. Even if they are his strongest point, lagging muscle groups do tend to catch up over time since they're further away from potential.

yes we can.

i think you're fine, just make sure you're going deep enough on squats. that was my issue ,but even though i've fixed it, my bench is still only at 195 and my squats are around 315.

You can definitely gain 15 lbs in 3 months but not 15 lbs of muscle.

with 250g of protein and 250g of carbs you'd need to eat 188g of fat to reach 3,700 cals. You can do that if you want but you may want to just get like 80-90g fat and add the remaining calories to carbs.

Keep doing legs they look fine and are not even that big

Legs look fine to me. I wouldn't drop (that much) weight on squat without having someone check your form first. Why lose progress just because someone thinks you're out of proportion? Your other body parts will catch up.

I will keep doing them, but what do you think of my idea to shift my DL and OHP day to twice a week and bench / squat to once? Actually... Maybe I'll do bench / DL 2x a week since those seem to be lagging the most?

Not my intention at all haha.

What program are you on?

Something is wrong somewhere with a dead lift almost 100lbs less than a squat, I'm not sure how that even happens on any well-designed program.

I think I read my 1rm on DL wrong on JEFit. I'll post it a bit later when I'm done. I'm on Greyskull btw.

As far as squat form, I know I can work on it as I'm barely hittin parallel with that weight. I'm going to work on 3/4 of the day down. Maybe not full a2g though.

You don't need that much brotein, 1g/lb is enough if you're natty, and you should up the carbs.

I hope I'm not coming across as an ass, it isn't my intention. I simply want to make sure you look into this properly so you don't suffer down the line.

Makes more sense if you might not even be hitting parallel though. Go deeper with far less weight so you hit the proper muscle groups instead of just quads.

Not at all man. I know that you're just looking out for my gainzzzz. I appreciate everyones analysis and helpful tips. I'll report back when I drop weight and we can take it from there.

Thanks, guys. I'll drop my protein to around 200g and up my carbs then. I'm expecting around 1/5 (2-3LBS) of the 15LBS to be muscle. Hopefully that's realistic.

I believe under ideal conditions (really ideal) the human body can pack on 1lb of muscle a month. Best of luck to you man. Just remember muscle is much more densely packed than fat. Comparing a lb of each is really eye opening.

maybe I am not the best reference but I think it's extremely, extremely hard.

It's almost as if that kind of progress is reserved for pro athletes that plan their day around this activity and their level of determination surpasses that of most regular guys going to the gym.

EDIT: not to mention, they invest in a trainer that tells them what exactly they should do at different points in a day.

That's not unrealistic unless maybe he's been weightlifting pretty hard core for several years.

agree, but putting up 10 pounds of pure muscle in 5 or 6 months is really good. Any guy doing that definitely deserves a "congrats" for determination, passion and taking this seriously.

Dunno, maybe it's normal but I really think there is a lot of work put into that achievement.

That's why I said under REALLY IDEAL conditions :)

What about Frank Yang putting on 60 pounds in 7 months? Looked like a good amount of it was muscles along with a ton of fat.

I was a in a similar situation. Never got as low as 185 but damn close and height is the same. I'm now at 205 and I still look like a gust of wind could blow me over, I don't know where the weight is going.

I am of the opinion that Frank Yang looked better before his crazy bulk. Like the first stage when he was doing the 8000 cal/day diet, at around 175-180 lbs. He looked way more ripped and defined. Now he may be stronger, but just "big".

Well he's going on a cut now I believe, but yeah, I'd agree that his bulk when he returned to Maryland started making him look a little puffy towards the tail end. Guy's going to look crazy when he's done with his cut though.

I have the exact same weight and height as you :p I want to add more muscle too (especially on my legs), but I don't think I dare trying bulking. It might take a longer time to reach my goals, but I would like to stay at my current body fat percentage. Make sure to post updates, I would like to see your progression.

Yeah man I'm currently somewhere around 9-10% bodyfat if I had to eyeball it (for reference, you can see the upper portion of my abs). I plan on giving bulking a good 3 months to see what kind of progress I can get out of it. I'll definitely post pictures along the way.

That's what I've heard as well. Regardless, that's what I'll be shooting for. Best of luck to you as well my man!

I have what I thought was a decent amount of muscle for being 185, but after doing some research and some reading, I realize it's mostly just an illusion. I've never been in a position where I've had to gain/lose weight before so it will be interesting to see how this turns out. I'm a little nervous but I think it'll be a great thing in the long run.

Expect for when my clothes no longer fit. #manshionGAF

I'd say if training and nutrition is on point that is unrealistic by 12-18 months in. Still even five pounds of muscle makes you look like a different person.

He said 2-3 lbs of muscle in 3 months, there's nothing unrealistic with that if his diet and training are proper.

My bottle of zinc just arrived in the mail, but it's light on directions. Is there an optimal time to take it? And should I take one with a meal or on an empty stomach?

Ok? So what amount of muscle do you think is "optimal" for someone who is 6"3?

It can help with sleep. I always take it like 30 min before bed. I don't think you need to take it with food.

You should be aware though that you should also take 2 mg copper per day if you are supplementing with extra zinc since zinc depletes copper.
