I have more or less exactly the same. I look pretty good standing up and my abs are visible when I contract them. But when I sit down (especially after having eaten) I have a pretty big belly hanging... It sort of bothers me but I don't want to give up my SS gains while it's still going. :)

I just think people like us carry the fat more in our gut so it just shows that much more. Even when I leaned out to 12% or so, I didn't have very visible abs. It is what it is.

There's a place for conditioning certainly, and it can be very productive when properly programmed. But I think it's more beneficial for intermediate lifters. Novice lifters (like myself and most of the people posting in this thread) should stick to strength because that's what will give you the best bang for your buck, trainingwise.

Also, I don't think it's usually idea to look at what elite athletes do for training. They are elite because they have elite genetics, not because their training is necessarily well programmed and they can get away with a lot of stupid shit.

Aren't most people looking to programs and training methods made by elite lifters, guys that are also blessed with great genetics? It's really the same thing, everyone has different goals though and since I still play basketball, I look to what athletes do as opposed to power lifters. So for me at least, I see no benefit in dropping cardio out of my routine, I've been doing sprints and jogging for a while now and I feel I made great gains. I never followed SS or any of those programs when I started.

Not every pro athlete has great genetics either, there are the obvious ones who do, and then there are the guys that worked extremely hard to get where they are.

Damn, just for you it's twice a week?

Yeah, I think they're like 15.00, while the raw ones are 20.00 for ten pounds. But you can't beat that convienence factor. I usually throw them in the microwave while I'm cooking breakfast.

I hope those steak-eze things taste good. I'm going to slice the big peppers in half, layer them with the sliced steak and put provolone on top.

Yep. I don't bulk shop, though. I only buy enough for 2 bags since I'm taking stuff in the subway.

Hah, tell me about it. I've been training for 19 months and I haven't reached that 1.75x squat yet. Which for me would be almost 400lb.

That's 1.75x for 1RM though. Of course that'd be under ideal conditions: a 18-24 year old male doing GOMAD as well as eating his brains out. Like that guy on Reddit who got to a 400lb squat and 500lb deadlift in like 6 months because he was eating like 450 grams of protein a day with 2XGOMAD or something.

Exactly. Strength training is a marathon, not a sprint. I am naturally very weak and used to get really bummed out that my lifts were progressing so slowly. But as long as I keep a adding weight to the bar, even if it's just 5lb a month, I'm pushing forward. And makes me happy.

Nothing beats persistence.

Bro-fist. Pegs returned.

I have another question.....some internet sites state protein should be taken with moderation, meaning, at some point the liver (liver, right?) will stop processing it, making any further intake pointless. is this right or BS?

can anyone doing responsible workout take an endless ammount of protein per day, the more the better? (I guess, answer is no but I'd like to know about the implications of taken too much of it)

There's probably no one on earth who knows more about protein synthesis than this guy:

He's a professional natural bodybuilder / powerlifter AND he has a PhD in Biochemistry.

your body will still digest the food otherwise you'd shit out steak and chicken pieces. The problem is unless you are on dat dere sterons you can't use that much protein for muscle building purposes so it is pointless. Steroids raise muscle protein synthesis so you can eat a lot more.

It could also be hard on your kidney's but that is debatable if you don't have preexisting renal problems.

Hello Layne, in this video you say that anabolic response maxes out at 30-40 grams of protein. So does that mean that if I consume say 70 grams of protein in a single meal, even though the entire thing is absorbed only around 40 grams is used for muscle buiding while the remaining 30 is not used at all. Consequently does that also mean that this 30 grams which was not used does not add up to my daily intake requirement of protein. Could you please clarify?

this is EXACTLY what I wanted to read about, pity it hasn't been answered. I have a meal (Tuna with a special protein bread they sell here in Germany) that has around 70 gr. of protein but I am not sure whether I am doing good or wrong taking it...according to him I won't have any kidney or liver damage but the question in the quote remains open.

WTF! purple guy has a hard on? lol

My understand of what he said was that 30-40g is ideal but if you have more than then, the body slows down its obsorbation of protein but it will eventually use all of it, just over a period of time.

So what I'm going to do is have my shake and then have my meal 2hrs later for max efficient protein usage!

If I weren't so concerned with becoming a major fat ass, I'd try GOMAD. As it is, I'm never very lean even when I try to lean out (see progress pics), and at 210 lbs starting this bulk, I feel like GOMAD might put me on the track to blubberdom.

That's probably irrational fear and I probably should just say fuck it and go for it tho.

There's one 5 mins from my gym, never would have known....50g of protein in their Chicken Sandwich? Will be going there soon.

Where in NYC are you?

I work near Ground Zero, and there's a MMG by City Hall Park. MMG is the shit.

Hah I still have three pairs of cotton short shorts I always wore to the gym in college. I didn't intend for it that way, but I found them in an unopened pack in my house years ago. Why go out and buy shorts when I had fine pairs to treat like dirt?

Doing leg extensions with them on feels boss.

If I'm to join you gentlemen for the revolution I'm going to have to hit legs real hard for the next six months.
Do it! I always have people staring at me on leg press, not so much for the weight, but because my shorts fall to my crotch and they see my legs in full glory. It's kinda cool I suppose.

They stare because it's only so often they get to see someone walking on tree trunks. :p

All right then. It's settled. Bigger thighs for July.

I'd have to get a tan before I could wear those. Dat type 1 skin. Thinking of trying melanotan. It's the only way I could tan without getting a spray.

Yeah, didn't the one in Tonawanda close up?

There's a new one opening up on the corner of Niagara Falls Blvd and Sheridan in the next year or so.

Just got a chest freezer over Christmas break so I've been stocking up on meats and veggies.

I'm actually nor in Buffalo anymore. Moved back to Syracuse now that the g/f graduated.

i just bought a pair of Chuck Taylor's and my god...they make such a difference. Before I'd use running shoes and I could feel my feet and knees were unstable when doing squats and dead lifts at higher weights. Now it feels like my feet are anchored to the floor and I can tell the weight is evenly distributed on my feet. I highly recommend any of you guys that use running shoes to give them a try.

How often should you be adding 5 and 10 pounds to your lifts?

during SS? every workout.
This is how I did it:

squat and deadlift: 10lbs each workout
everything else: 5lbs each workout
if I had 1.25lb plates, then I would increase OHP and Power Cleans by 2.5lbs a workout.

It depends on the lift TBH, with bench I ditched the barbell and used dumbbells instead and was adding 5-10lbs every other week. Deadlift and Squats I was adding weight pretty rapidly as well, only one I really took a long time with was OHP.

I just made a 12oz salmon filet and a 1/4 cup of brown rice for dinner. By my calculations, 80g of protein and 29g of carbs.

Really expensive dinner though!

i'm enjoying my cut with IF.. most of my friends understand it but one of my colleagues (who is quite round) continually tries to put me down by saying i'm starving myself skinny. she's quite jelly.

what's everyone's ideal chest/waist size? i'm currently 41" chest, 31" waist.. 6"2 so it doesn't look too bad. trying to get my waist down to 30" to give better visibility of lats when not pumped etc.

I've been in a vortex of shit ever since I got some sort of superflu and respiratory infection on NYE. Before then I was making great linear progress.

Two weeks bedridden, came back and my lifts were ~80% of pre-flu, and my strength has dropped in each of the last two successive sessions since as well; it's trending downward instead of bouncing back.

I ate 250 grams of protein today. If I get weaker again next session I'm breaking the bar over my knee and flipping it off. ;b

It takes a few weeks to get back in the swing of things, I lost about 7lbs during a 1 week period last year because of a stomach virus and I wasn't back to my normal lifts until about a month later.

It's frustrating, but you should see an upswing soon.

Yes this is typically why I make my lunch my biggest protein meal I eat it around 12 and then I usually don't eat dinner until 7.

Give it another week or two and you'll be back to pre-flu levels.

I've been on low carbs for six months so have lost the flab but strength and muscle as well I think and am at 80% too I think.

But I'll smash through!

I'm doing back today. Deadlifts are a given but is it worth doing romanian deadlifts as well? What are the benefits? What else is effective for the back?

Just joined fitocracy last night and I'm on level 5 already!

Well, just came back from the gym.

Squats and DL went up by 5 kg yay :D
But my Bench Press stayed the same :( I tried to add some weight but failed miserably -.-

Also, I'll be playing soccer with my buddies in the afternoon, so I guess I'll have to stuff my face with food today x_x

When calculating your caloric needs, what level of physical activity are you guys using in your equations? Yesterday I met all my nutritional goals, but somehow I still ended up losing weight from my weigh in the day before. This seems to happen a lot on my upper body hypertrophy days.

You shouldn't be weighing in every day. That's going to do nothing but mislead and cause confusion.

I weigh myself only every Saturday morning for some decent accuracy, otherwise I will see crazy fluctuations due to factors such as sodium that would mess with my head.

Deadlifts are more of a leg exercise, especially hamstrings. Your back gets hit, but there are better back exercises. Pendlay rows, t-bar rows, pull ups, id also do good mornings.

Good mornings?

I need to work on my legs and hamstrings and buttocks which is why I started the deadlifts but it seems to work well for my back?

I need to start doing pull ups but they're so hard :(
