Did HIIT today on the treadmill. I couldn't finish the 5-6 sets. Is there a way to build more endurance? Maybe i have it to high. I think i may try running outside. What do you think?

I think I'm gonna have to stop Squats and Deadlifts for at least a month.

~3 weeks ago something popped in my lower left back while deadlifting heavy. Back feels fine walking, running and lifts other than Squats and Deadlifts. I've been taking it easy on the squats with only warm up weight and today while squatting the bar I felt the same pain. Kind of sucks since squats and deadlifts are my favorite lifts.

Oh well, better to wait and let it heal then continually damage it.

Ok, I need to get serious.

Age: 24
Height: 5'10''
Weight: 270

Goal: I mostly want to get to 200 pounds quick (in 5-6 months preferably), then go to a gym and get a trainer when I have monies.

Current Training Schedule: Nothing.

Current Training Equipment Available: P90x, Home Bench Press, I have a door pull up bar but it doesn't work well on my doors, I'd probably buy resistance bands since I'd need to use a chair for help if I found a door that worked well anyway.

Comments: I don't really have the money to buy food for a special diet. I eat what my family cooks. Tonight I ate stew for supper. Meat, potatoes, carrots, broth and drank water. The day before that was... rice-a-roni and a fried chicken breast with sweet tea.

I've been sitting around a lot getting fat and eating too much the past year because of depression. So I know only drinking water, portion control, and being a lot more active would probably knock off 10 by itself pretty quickly. I cut soda out of my diet long ago, but I've replaced it with homemade sweet tea. I love water tho.

You want to work into it. As long as you get 3-4 sets the first few weeks, you'll be fine. Just increase it as it gets easier.

The only time not recommended to eat is something like between midnight and two because your body assumes it's sleep time and slows the metabolism. Don't worry about when you eat dinner. 9-10pm dinners are normal for mass diets.

This body assuming sleep time sounds very much like broscience to me. Where did you hear it?

But yes, eat whenever you want/need. Jim Wendler even says to get up at night to eat if you otherwise can't get enough food :p

Oh god this guy at the gym fucking yells at the top of his lungs everytime he works. Not powerlifting yells, 911 yells. Everyone in the gym was scratching their heads, looking over to see if he was OK. It was pretty distracting and I had headphones on at max volume. To top it all off he's relativlety new to lifting. I wonder if there's a way for me to approach him without sounding like too much of an ass hole.

Had the same thing happen before, turns out it was one of the trainers.

Screw squats with a sunburn! Ouch!!!!!!

Feels bad, man.

I did manage 5x5 135lb OHP today - that felt pretty good.

I'm not sure how I feel about OHP anymore. After 135 they really start to hurt my wrists. Lately I've been doing db for shoulder (Arnold, etc) and that's much easier on them.

My stomach has been really iffy the last four days, so I'm wondering if I should work out tomorrow. My stomach just feels weird and "warm", and I'm very gassy and burp and fart all the time. Wake up at night feeling as if I have to throw up. If I lie on my sides, bile comes up, so I have to lie on my back propped up with a pillow. Energy is way down from the usual. I don't know if it's because of something I ate or perhaps a virus. A wisdom tooth has been bothering me for three-four days, but would that effect my intestines? I skipped one workout yesterday, so I'm not comfortable with skipping yet again tomorrow, but I guess it's the only reasonable thing to do.

Something similar happens to me every other week; stomach just gets mad bloated and stays like that for 3-4 days or so. It may be different symptoms but for me its straight up the fact that I tend to get irregular.
When you eat, just add a little olive oil to your meals (or metamucil). Also, try to stay away from raw veggies like peppers, oignons, salad, mini carrots etc., as well as the peel form fruits (and veggies). And drink a hell of a lot of water.

Hopefully someone has other tips, but you dont need to stay away from the gym!

So I got my Fit Test 1 done for Insanity:

86; 46; 68; 19; 4; 10; 24; 30

I know it's low, made a mistake of eating 30 minutes before, and to top that I made spicy food (didn't mean to, added to much chili flakes!).

When is a good time to do the workout? Should I get up in the morning, exercise immediately and eat a nice breakfast? Or can I do it late at night and just eat an apple or a banana and go to sleep? Don't have protein shakes yet, and I'm worried not enough carbs after workout will make me burn muscles.

Watching The Dark Knight Rises and seeing Bane gave me quite a bit of motivation for today's workout :lol

It went well too. Gotta love Bane.

Have you seen the Tom Hardy workout? My step brother was telling me just yesterday how Hardy would balance on his head, back arched off the ground, and then do his chest presses. Fucking nuts.

what is a good alternative for protein powder if i dont have any?

Cottage cheese has whey in it. I think what you're really asking is a good way to get lean protein. Egg Whites, Tuna, Turkey, Chicken, fish in general (I'm fond of salmon, pollack, shrimp, crab). Add tabasco to everything and take it like a man.

Ah the fit test. I honestly never really cared for it >_>

Also there is an insanity specific thread you may want to bump!

You can do insanity pretty much whenever you want, but try to keep a routine. Also wait at least an hour after eating (in my experience).

Also, protein shakes are good and easy, but if you don't have them for now just eat some meat.

Another thing, is your goal gaining muscle? Because Insanity is not ideal for that. It will at best help PRESERVE original muscle, and burn fat (as long as you stick to a good diet). You may get minor muscle gains if you are a newbie, but weight lifting is much better for gaining muscle. Remember if you're losing fat you will lose some muscle as well.

I started exercising just a month ago. I was always rather slim, but now I want to get muscles. I am thinking of using Insanity to get me into shape, then build some muscles and then probably do another round of Insanity.

Main advantage of Insanity is that I find it incredibly motivational. Sure, this is all "c'mon, let's do it!" American thing, but it works in fitness! I did pilates before and the pace was too slow, even though I was getting tired and burning fat.

Does anyone else find the sleeping part harder to keep up with than the diet?

I've always had sleep issues. Yesterday I had a great workout but just couldn't fall asleep. Ended with around 5 hours of sleep. Does that invalidate my entire workout? Argh.

I have a lot of trouble sleeping as well, I averaged around 5-6 hours the last two years, and I've made great progress.

I tried doing pull ups without the assisted machine yesterday.

Holy shit, I can't do more than one full rep.
I saw somewhere reading/watching videos that if you go to the top and stayed there for a few seconds and slowly lower your body, it's a good start.

Is there any tips? I can do about 5 chin-ups as well. Dammit, I have no arm strength.

Just keep at it. 2 months ago I started doing pullups(alternating with chinups as well) as a warmup before my lifts. At the time I could barely do one set of 3. Now I can do 3 sets of 8 pretty easily. Its my favorite part of my workout cause it feels like I'll never stagnate and I'll always keep on increasing.

I haven't seen improvements all Summer. Is it because I'm cutting? I've been getting in a ton of protein. None of my lifts have really gone down except Squats.

I hate deadlifts, my back is always killing me after doing them and for about 10-20 minutes after I cant feel anything except the muscles in my back screaming for relief. I am going to start leaving them for last. Right now I can only get up to about 140lbs (on the smith machine though. Maybe I should try it with some dumbbells instead.

You're doing something wrong then. My back feels really strong after deads.

Don't use the smith. It completely restricts your range.

I'm posting from my phone so I can't post videos but I'm sure someone has helpful tips on deads.

Sorry for the late reply. That bit of info I'm referencing was from a Japanese medical journal on the detriment of late night snacking to fat loss diets. I wasn't specifically telling the poster that that info related to him, was just making a random comment about something I'd come across a few years ago. Hopefully I cleared that up with my "eat anytime" comment. Still, I chuckled at using the term "broscience" to automatically shoot down something that might not be a popular line of thought.

Well to be honest I didn't "shoot it down". I simply stated that it sounded like broscience to me and I wanted to know more of where you'd heard of it and if there was anything backing it up.

Yeah but broscience has the same connotation as dudebro - not to be taken seriously. I didn't take offense and it was just a random tidbit so I have zero stake in defending it. Still, hopefully I answered your question.

Alright thanks. The whole "staying up until you can't any more" idea is fine then?

Also, even as a newbie, I know to stay away from Smiths machine for deadlifts and squats.
I see people doing squats on it all the time at my gym and their movement just look awkward as fuck.

After another 4 months of resting and taking care of my left hip flexor, I finally gave squats a try again last night. Decided to be ultra-conservative and started with a warm-up of the bar followed by 3x5 at 95 lbs. Pretty humbling, especially when I followed it up with a 290 lb deadlift, and when I used to be squatting 225 back in December/January.

My hip flexor is definitely sore today, but not the same pain/irritation I'd suffered from before, so I think it's OK. I'm going to still ice and stretch it and take Advil for the first few weeks of training, but the goal will be to slowly strengthen it until it catches up to the rest of my legs.

If this fails, I'm just going to give in and immediately see a PT.

I probably wouldn't do that part. I wouldn't do anything to mask any pain, you want to know when and if it hurts so you can adjust accordingly and not seriously injure yourself.

I agree with you on the pain-masking part. I don't plan to take the Advil to prevent pain (I've never really been a pain meds guy, even after my back surgery and wisdom teeth removal), and probably won't be taking it too close to my training (either before or after) to try to ensure that's the case.

However, more importantly, Advil is great for reducing inflammation, which is what I want it for.

I seem to be getting skinny-fat somehow. From skinny to skinny-fat...despite heavily working out, like almost every day. My upper body is getting bigger but I don't understand where this little gut is coming from.

Anyone else experiencing this? I ASSUME it's my caloric intake, which is odd because I generally eat pretty healthy and I'm always hungry so I must be burning off a hell of a lot.

That I can get on board with. In my head you were popping a couple Advil right before going to lift, which would seem like a bad combo.

Carry on. Nothing to see here but a bit too many assumptions on my part. :)

If you're gaining muscle you're going to gain some fat with it. It just comes with the territory.

More info about your diet and caloric intake would be helpful to answering though.

I gained a huge belly from May-December last year. Took bulking way to serious and went from 180-215. Was easy enough to lose though, and a ton of muscle came with it.

So we should just trust you?

What's magic about 12-2AM that makes your metabolism slow down? Does it immediately slow down? Is it worse to eat at 1:30AM or 12:15AM?

I think you've got it. I am trying to bulk so I was eating a full pound of chicken breast a day after a workout (and was still hungry!) and that has added at least 8 pounds to my weight in the past 2 months.

I guess I should aim to Cut for a while.

Eh. Don't get into the whole cutting thing too early. If you think you're gaining too much weight, track your calories for a bit, and see how many you're eating, then lower it. You don't want to give up those muscle gains already!

Part of the reason is also that I have really big abs. Like, I actually pushed them really hard. I think that may be contributing to the illusion of a small belly, because you can definitely see the six pack, but it's "soft". Like, big and strong, but also has a layer of fat.
