My daughter turns 2 today! I never thought being a dad would be THIS fun but I think I've smiled and laughed more in the last two years than in the 30+ before it combined.

Why is that news? They've been called sprinters squats for as long as I've known because of having that effect.

Perhaps they do, and research studies weren't structured correctly to observe the effect. That's what the actual research paper indicates to me anyway:

https://www.researchgate.net/profil...8ae01f736e8e3bb.pdf?origin=publication_detail

As far as being well-known, I don't remember anyone on here trying to program full squats for overall strength, and quarter squats for speed. I know we have runners.

So what's the best way to do a seated military press at the gym? Can I pull a bench over to the squat rack or will that get me funny looks?

I do this all the time, though there's usually already benches in two of the squat racks from bench press users. Mind you my gym is always empty when I go in the morning, so there's never really any competition over the squat racks.

Without the aid of bumper plates (and being able to drop the bar from the rack position, I set two power clean PRs this morning:

145 lbs x 5, 165x3 (PR), 185lbs (PR)

To reach one of my goals, I'll have to increase by five pounds every three weeks. Since I splay my legs out when I catch the bar, maybe fixing that would give me a boost.

Starting Strength forums seem to be going a bit nutty over a new study showing benefits to vertical jump and sprinting speed of quarter squats. I don't know how I could do those in public, even if they do transfer better for speed.

I'll need a home gym for that.

lol. it always made more sense that quarter squats would translate more to the vertical jump.

Meh. Do it to it. I have done plenty of partials for curls, leg extensions, flat bb bench, etc. I know what I am doing and don't care what other people are thinking. It all serves a purpose. You will tend to get flack if you say you set a new squat PR when quarter squaring. Same with bench. Blah blah blah.

Damn, I do think you look pretty good even back then. :p

Hahah, now I need some current photos then. ;)

Love you guys. Thanks for the birthday wishes!
Happy Birthday to the little one! ^_^

I suppose it doesn't matter what people think if I can jump higher and run faster outside the gym.

Just did chins 3x11, let's see someone else at the gym doing that.

Runners... yes. Sprinters... ?

Maybe it's just the circles I move in, but yeah, people have been doing this for years (it used to be the first argument for people to call on when they were accused of not squatting to depth).

Hey guys!

First time posting in this thread. I've been a vegetarian for a few years and I've recently started lifting weights seriously again for the first time since I've abandoned meat. And getting sufficient protein has been a problem. So, for the first time ever, I've decided to dabble in protein powder. The problem? I have no idea what Im doing. Any suggestions on what to buy would be super useful and appreciated.

Btw, this thread is put together really well. Fantastic resource for beginners and beyond.

You'd be fine with cheap 100% whey to supplement your diet. Buy the two pound varieties of vanilla and chocolate to start, and see which you like better. Mix with milk (if you drink milk) for better taste and drink it whenever. Grab a shaker cup to have it blend smooth or use a magic bullet with peanut butter, milk, banana and protein.

If you have ok cholesterol and eat eggs, you should be eating them daily. High in protein and a ton of great nutrients. Plus you can make them so many different ways. Food from the gods.

Thank you. I assumed Whey was the route I wanted and the affirmation is appreciated.

I usually go through a dozen eggs a week (That cage-free lifestyle), usually with a can or 2 of black beans in the mix,and force a Cliff bar Builders bar down after a weight session. But I just never hit the mark. My poor muscles crave more protein and I think your advice and the Whey will really help

Brian Burke punched my mom
Upped volume a little.

345/355 front squirts
405/415/405x3 and 315/365x8 beltless HB paused squats

Awake for 24hrs and 365 set was brutal :/

Chronic injuries can suck so bad. Two weeks ago after a training session I was sore in my left arm above the elbow joint. Next morning I was in constant pain. I was the entire weekend and went to the doctor the following monday, got a scan on tuesday, and talked about the results the day after.
Nothing they could do or see.

Old surgery in the upper arm has left mass amount of scar tissue. While nothing is wrong physically, it gives me pain when I try to do to take my reps or weight to the next level. But I have no idea how to train chest, core without putting pressure on the arm. :(

I'm thinking of maybe trying planking, by putting the weight on my right side. Is it correct that even though you only work on side of your body, it will actually also work the other side? I've heard people speak of this before, that the body tries to calibrate the gains evenly.

I want to get into using the foam roller, but it just hurts too much in my left arm when stretching out. I cannot do dips or pullups, or push ups.
I guess I could do hindu squats! I just have bad form when it comes to squat. I'm terrible at arching my back correctly!
I could do situps, but I hear from friends that they not worth it. So besides running I don't know what I can really do. Any suggestions?

TLDR; Any suggestions to hit the core/chest/abs without using the left arm?

Walking 2 miles round trip to and from work every day hopefully is gonna contribute to some weight loss and physique change.

Also, as it's hot as fuck here in Texas, I've been swimming at least 5 times a week (we have a lap pool at my complex), which is my favorite form of exercise. I do around a half hour of breaststroke nonstop, and I can definitely feel the soreness in my muscles so I hope that will do some sculpting. I need to get more protein to take after swimming, though.

Got a protein question for you guys

i'm currently at my folks and I Have some protein here that expired 11/13/2015.

is this safe to consume? did some google work and found some conflicting information. I ordered some new powder but it won't be here for 4-5 days.

it's not sealed. Smells like protein powder I guess. Safe to consume?

Probably fine, but I still wouldn't eat it just in case. Just go and eat some meat or greek yoghurt instead.

Unrelated, this looks quite an interesting bit of kit: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/form-lifting-train-smarter-sports-fitness#/ / https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/formlifting/formcollar

The first smart device to help you improve both the form and performance of all barbell lifts. With 7 integrated motion sensors delivering 200 samples per second directly to the free FORM Lifting App on your smartphone, you’ll be able to see improvement in the palm of your hand, truly giving you metrics that matter. With the ability to reference back to a single lift or an entire session with cloud-based storage, track your progress over time to drive your performance to new levels.

Not cheap though.

Glad I decided to take it easy this week. I feel awesome today after taking it easy on Squats today.

Happy belated birthday to her.

Would be great if it works properly

Any particular reason? I've not looked at it in any great detail.

Looks like a tool for a coach, not so much as a self-help tool as they advertise it; poor substitute for a coach. Can't tell you the important things in powerlifting and weightlifting; your back is rounding, hitting depth or not, bar path, or technique. It's a fun toy if you have money to burn or just like having extra data/metrics.

What can you really do with the data that can directly apply to your training? You're just spending more time and work looking at data and start worrying about details rather than adjusting on the fly based on feeling and coaching.

It's also a lock-jaw collar, not sure how long it'll last. The prevailing preference in weightlifting is no collars, weightlifting collars are used in competition or in the competition training hall. So I don't see any use from a weightlifting perspective.

Strength, power, and technique gives you performance, why make it more complicated.

EDIT: I guess the nice thing is that it is a cheap alternative to Tendo thing and maybe cause more speed tracking gadgets to come out. However there are other things out there like Open Barbell and PUSH band.

I would have thought it probably could do bar path, based on the sensors it has. But yeah, I see your other arguments, they make sense.

I do use that sort of collar though, so that wouldn't be an issue for me.

My circle has about one other lifter. It's always nice to learn something new. I just thought everyone would love to improve vertical jump a lot of it were possible and read from Rippetoe that it wasn't.

Just did day 1 of my new workout routine on a quest of self improvement. Also my first day of not smoking, and 3rd of not drinking. I worked out for just over 2 hours today, a 4 mile AM bike ride and day 1 of the P90X workout.

I hurt everywhere....

I think there are pro wrestlers trying to achieve an FE physique now.

Good work. Stick with and and reap the rewards!

Finally going to the doctor's today to have my groin or my adductors examined. I haven't been able to do leg day in weeks. Pretty sure I'm approaching the aesthetics of a chicken rather fast.

Oh, I intend to. Lots of bad things in life for me as of late, so getting back into shape and kicking my addictions are high priorities to prove to myself that I can improve myself.

Missed my bike ride this morning though, couldn't fall asleep for shit.

Fell of the wagon for a month or two. Got married three week back, went to Bali for two weeks and spent last week at our summer house. June was pretty hectic with all the wedding stuff so we just gradually went to the gym less and less. Last time was 5-6 weeks ago. Haven't been active in the thread for a while either.

Give me a program to get back in to action. Preferably something else than just plain SS. Can't decide myself, too many options to choose from.

What's the best pre-gym snacks for lean muscle? just eggs, banana, or nuts? no carbs?

What ever gives you the energy to do your workout. Whether you get lean or not depends on the diet as whole not the peri-workout rituals unless it completely throws you off to not eat something right before.

Hate this time of year. Small nagging injuries start popping up, little pains and strains and I lose that locked in feeling and start to cheat on diet. Softball is finally over but with my son's birthday, my birthday, anniversary and fair time it's not a good time to keep diet in check like I should. Also the gym is closed starting the 15th for their week long maintenance and cleaning week.

My left elbow has been hurting and for too long I just lifted heavy through it but it got worse so now reduced to cardio and light lifting. It hurts to the touch as well as trying to do pretty much any upper body lifting. Going to take it really easy until I feel that drive and motivation again. Hopefully sooner than later as I am feeling fat and lazy even though I still weigh where I would like and look decent.
