Folks that own both a PS4 and X1, are you able to justify both purchases thus far?

I own all three and the Xbox gets the least amount of playtime. There aren't any games that interest me. Sunset Overdrive is the only game I've beaten. Great game, it justified my purchase of the system. I will pick up Ori at some point most likely.

Kind of. I was always going to buy a PS4, and I've enjoyed a couple of great exclusives on it--Second Son is easily my favourite Infamous to date, for example. But surprisingly, the Xbox One I bought on sale last E3 has gotten more use this year, and its almost entirely because of Forza games. It probably doesn't help that I never got into Souls games, and so had zero interest in Bloodborne.

In general, though, neither console feels like it has much to shout about. My top three platforms played this year, in ascending order, are PS3, PC, and 3DS (!!!) at the top. If you had told me that a year ago I would've dismissed it as impossible, but here we are.

I justify them because I always have the two but honestly there's nothing on PS4 that was worth a purchase for me honestly. I don't like Demon Soul like games so I didn't even try Bloodborne. I hated The Order. Honestly PS4 is the only system where I'm going to start buying games physically because every game I've purchased is something that I would've sold.

Own all three, and the Xbox is the least played. I do enjoy it for the exclusives that I've played, and it's the Sunset Overdrive bunduru, so I can sort of justify it.

I'm usually a completist when it comes to console generations.

Yes and no.

I play mainly on my PS4, as there is no reason to play multiplats on Xbox One. So my Xbox One is exclusivly used for exclusives. I had some great experiences I didn't want to miss, like Ori, Forza Horizon 2 and Sunset Overdrive. On the other hand my Xbox One is unemployed for most of the time. There are months where I don't fire him up...

So it's a double feeling. If you can live with missing out on some exclusives, there is no reason to buy both.

I'm a PC Gamer who also owns a bone and a ps4; I can justify the Xbox One because I'm a really big Forza fan and my group of friends love to play Halo so MCC is always a popular thing to break out at parties. The ps4 on the other hand sits doing very little of anything due to a lack of titles I'm particularly interested in that aren't on PC. PERSONA 5 May change things slightly but we will have to wait and see.

I've got good friends on both platforms. That's a good enough reason for me.

Though I do admit I use my XB1 less than any of my other consoles.

Plus I got a pretty good deal on my XB1.

Eh, not really. Xbone = "sort of" due to it being a decently functional media player + Titanfall early on (tho I burned out quick on TF within 2 months after release) + Halo MCC (SP plays fine which is all I care about, so the MP disaster didn't effect me all that much). I slightly prefer the Xbone controller and online/social experience, so it scores points with me there. Overall I guess I find myself firing it up more often.

Sadly, my PS4s have mostly collected dust so far. I did really enjoy The Order (and feel it garnered a lot of unfair negativity). But aside from that, I haven't played much on PS4 yet. PS+ has been lackluster for me since the PS4 launch...if not for some of the PS3 titles it'd be a total bust in that regard. The PS4 media player is whack, so it gets no love in that dept. It's basically my SP exclusive box at this point.

I'm looking forward to checking out Bloodborne, The Last of Us, and Until Dawn, but my last gen backlog is crazy and I still want to finish the Souls + Uncharted games on PS3 before I bother. Honestly, if I hadn't gotten my PS4s essentially for free I'd probably view them as a waste of money at this point. But I know that'll change when some of the big exclusives drop in '16 (Uncharted, Horizon, etc...).

The reason ur ps4 is collecting dust is because you are sitting on the 2 best games available. Bloodborne and TLOU.

Both have felt like really solid purchases. If I didn't enjoy racing games though, this gen would have felt a bit thinner. I'm not even caught up on the games I have, but that's more down to my personal routine.

Great games on both systems, so yeah, I can justify the purchase. Anyway I can't live without my Gears, Uncharted, Halo, God of War etc...

own both and a pc.

very, very happy. was more happy with ps4 over the summer/spring, more happy with x1 right now.

its a fun ebb and flow.

Got my PS4 I use daily. My Xbox I use occasionally for Halo and Killer Instinct, although rarely, and I just can't justify buying anything else for it at the moment, so not really? And I used to have a WiiU but ended up selling it cause none of the games managed to hold my interest for more than a few hours. Really my time is split between PS4 and my Vita.

They are both fine. I buy everything for ps4 first and only get Xbox games if they aren't available on PS4, Destiny is the only one I double dipped on.

I use the Xbox for football stuff sometimes, but honestly, I am not big on the Xbox as a whole.

Yes, but then my barrier to entry is usually pretty low.

I'm playing more games on PS4 but I've found the media side to Xbox one to be fantastic - switching between apps by voice and without changing inputs is great.

I also have a gaming PC but still tend to play multiplatform games on console. That might change when my steam link comes this month..

XB1 is still a no purchase for me

But that could change once they release some sort of slim model redesign....

Even then Im going to have a hard time justifying it.

My time is so limited right now that only my PS4 gets any attention. There is some room for portable play which will likely be my phone or my Vita

I have a friend that is justifying an XB1 purchase for Halo5 and Fallout4 with mod support. Thats a pretty big deal for people that dont want to invest in another PC. Those of us still sitting on adequate PCs have even less reason to grab an XB1

Its a great system and still has a vibrant community. I really dont have much to say about the topic other than pick one

There is no reason to REALLY support buying both unless you consider the respective exclusives unmissable...

For my personal tastes only the PS4 has given me those exclusives (Nintendo too... oh Nintendo you crafty bastards)

But I'd caveat that:

More money = less time = enjoy your free time more

I'm experiencing the same thing but I'm finding that I actually enjoy gaming more now that I only get an hour or two a day (at the very most)
Same for me, I do really enjoy the time I get. I only get 2 hours tops as well, but I love it when I do. The only thing for me is I end up just playing online with friends rather than getting into SP on a game.

I have all 3. X1 collects a lot of dust seems I get most multiplats on PS4 and there's not been many decent exclusives on it this year.

I definitely lean toward my PlayStation whenever a multiplatform game comes out, but I definitely don't shy away from purchasing the Xbox exclusives.

I've gotten quite a bit of playtime out of the MCC, but Sunset Overdrive is definitely my favorite game on the platform now (haven't picked up D4, FH2, or a couple of other exclusives yet, but plan on it soon).

I guess I'm one of the weird folks who can buy a console for one or two games because I don't regret getting my Xbox or 3DS (which I bought exclusively for Pokémon).

Honestly. Over this year and next... Outside of Bloodborne all the games that excite me going forward are multiplat.

Just pick one system (honestly doesnt matter which) and stick to it

Definitely take a look at exclusives that could excite you but you pretty much should have to much buyers regret at this point.

From a consumer standpoint XB1 and PS4 are pretty close.

I was able to justify my PS4 purchase fairly close to launch. Launch was fine. 2014 was good. 2015 so far has been pretty amazing. 2016 is gearing up to be even better.

The reason ur ps4 is collecting dust is because you are sitting on the 2 best games available. Bloodborne and TLOU.

Ya know, you're absolutely right. :p I suppose I'm no different than anyone else in that whether or not a purchase is "justifiable" largely depends on whether or not there's enough time to properly benefit from the purchase. For me it's a function of available free time plus a touch of gamer OCD that makes me prefer finishing earlier titles in a series or, say, by the same developer before starting newer games. For people who have more free time or prioritize PS4 gaming ahead of other options I'm sure it's easily justifiable. I also have a ton of PC games on Steam/GOG, so a lot of the problem at times is feeling overwhelmed by choices, like I'm staring down a backlog avalanche. Sometimes after a long day its easier to put on Netflix instead. :p I think I need to join one of the "Backlog Challenge" support groups in here. Lol

Yes. XB1 for Exclusives and multi-plats. PS4 for exclusives. Same has it's always been for going on three generations now. I just don't get to play as much as I used to.

I own a gaming pc as well as all 3 consoles and the Wii U is the only console I actually have any use for. I understand this is mostly my own fault though.

I wanted both, I bought both. I am an adult and can easily afford them, so I don't really feel like I have to justify buying them.
It's not about adulthood and affordability, it's about ethics in games journalism fiscal responsibility and time constraints.

Seriously, responses that pretty much start and end with "I'm an adult" irk me, because there's an implication here that by just being an adult, we always make sound decisions or we can automatically justify our own actions, and we all know that's not the case. Even millionares can experience buyer's remorse if they don't derive enough utility from their purchases. I would assume that most of us are adults, and we have a decent amount of disposable income to even support our hobby in the first place. As evidenced by most of the responses in this thread, that stuff doesn't mean anything.

And then there are the time constraints, which I didn't even touch upon in the OP but many posters chimed in on. I have a buttload of disposable income but not enough time in the world for all them games. I still haven't gotten The Wonderful 101 bro. Would probably go crazy if I tried to squeeze in playing time for an Xbox

I have a PS4, WiiU, and PC. I think that covers most games that I would want to play. I can't justify spending another $400 on a X1 for a few games when many of its exclusives are on PC or will be coming to PC.

I have every current system and Handheld EXCEPT for the Wii-U.

I barely play games anymore, but when I do, it better be a game thats a 9+ in my eyes, cause of time constraints, and even then I have no buyers remorse, cause the games I will play on them I feel will be worth the price of admission, as limited as they may be.

-The next time I will truly play my PS4 is when UC4 comes out (2016)
-The next time I will play my XBONE is when Scalebound or Crackdown (late 2016) comes outs
-Vita I have no idea, maybe just whenever the mood strikes, or when Tokyo Xanadu comes out West
-3DS XL, same as Vita
-For reference I havent touched either Handheld in months.

The only system I would say that is getting regular play is my PC, cause all the multiplat games I play on that instead. Currently playing GTA 5, and then next would probably be Fallout 4 and Tales of Zest.

Mainly used my PS4 as my Bloodborne and MGSV machine. I've also played through other gems like The Evil Within and REmake. There's plenty coming out for it next year and the year after, so I'm happy with my purchase.

Haven't really used my Xbox One much, but that's more my fault, still haven't played Killer Instinct, Rare Games Collection, D4 and Crimson Dragon all of which I've bought and just never played. I played through The Walking Dead Season 1 on it and still want to continue my adventure through Season 2 on it, so I've got plenty to play on it in the future. Those games have just gotten backlogged

My Wii U is being utilised as a streaming service now, but will finally use it again once Project Zero V comes out this month.

But honestly my PlayStation Vita, 3DS and Mac have been taking up all of my time lately (like 99% of my gaming time). That and the awesome weather, household chores, moving jobs, death in the family and just hanging out with my friends. Time just flies by before you realise it. Life is busy.

Street Fighter V for PS4 eventually, and Forza 6, Forza Horizon 2, and upcoming Halo 5 are justifications enough for me.

Wish my steering wheel and pedals worked for PS4 too though (Drive Club).

Yes and no.

I play mainly on my PS4, as there is no reason to play multiplats on Xbox One. So my Xbox One is exclusivly used for exclusives. I had some great experiences I didn't want to miss, like Ori, Forza Horizon 2 and Sunset Overdrive. On the other hand my Xbox One is unemployed for most of the time. almost exactly my thoughts. i bought the white xbox one with sunset overdrive. havent finished it though. if i would buy a game, it would be exclusives. also there are just too many good games coming out. im going more and more towards buying fewer games and dedicating more time to each title.

Almost only play on my PS4, i basically bought my Xbone for Halo. The masterchief collection didnt really work out that well as we all know but im sure ill play a ton of Halo 5. Quantum Break and Tomb Raider interest me aswell.

I have a PC, PS4, XBO and WiiU. The PS4 and WiiU basically never get used, the XBO is on for hours a day for the media stuff and at certain times of the year: Forza.

How I justified them? I pretty much didn't, I knew due to the relatively low amount of exclusive games that they wouldn't get used that much because there is basically never a reason to buy a multiplatform game on a console. But I still bought the PS4 and XBO on day one, because they're games consoles and gaming is my primary hobby.

I bought both at launch because I didn't own a 360 until way late and felt that some of the games I'd missed out on just didn't hold up that well and I wanted to play the exclusives when they came out rather than years later. But so far I've barely played my Xbox One. With exception to Sunset Overdrive & Forza Horizon 2, everything else I've been interested in has also come to PC which doesn't give me much reason to play it. I don't regret buying it as I'm sure by the time it's all over, I'll have had enough exclusives to justify it, but so far its been sparse. Funnily enough, I think I've played my Wii U more than my Xbox One this year.

EDIT: for clarity, I own PS4, Xbox One, PC, Wii U

Absolutely.

Sunset Overdrive, Killer Instinct and Forza Horizon 2 are, no exaggeration, some of the most fun I've had with any game in their respective genres.

After a streak of discouraging duds in Second Son, Shadowfall and Driveclub, Bloodborne didn't disappoint me. I can still close my eyes and practically be transported into its world, it left such a vivid impression. I also always knew that the PS4 would be my go-to box for Japanese shenanigans, and it's already begun to fill that purpose with a great version of Samurai Warriors 4. Lovely stuff like Gravity Daze 2 and more Project Divas await around the corner, and I'm just comfortable knowing that when Japanese things happen, they'll pretty much all happen on there.

I'll also switch over entirely to the PS4 for anything approaching media playback. Netflix, blu-rays, Spotify. The Xbox One is hilariously shoddy at all of that stuff. Jerky Netflix playback, hitchy blu-ray movies, gimped streaming apps with movie rentals removed - all of which is super ironic considering how it was positioned as the no-brainer centre of your entertainment setup. If my Xbox One was in my PS4's position of kinda waiting for the games, it'd be abysmal.

Oh and I play multiplatform games on PC. Would obviously change my PS4 situation quite a bit otherwise.

I dunno. I figure if I've played one game I know I didn't want to miss out on, it's a net positive for me. I feel great about both consoles in that regard.
