The problem is, the last 20 years of journalists being nice towards Molyneux, has resulted in nothing but bullshit from him. It was certainly harsh, and I think that was a nice change. He backed everything up with stone cold facts as far as I can tell, something most journalists don't want to as they're afraid they can't become the companies community manager in the future. Molyneux has shown to be a master at dancing around the press, this took no shit from the beginning.
I think this is the difference, honestly.
This is not a new guy in the industry who did his first oopsie on Kickstarter. This is a 30 y/o veteran who has been given a lot of leeway in terms of what he has said and what he has delivered. But this isn't even about "promising you could plant a tree and watch it grow on Fable" or such "promises" we make fun of. This is about taking money and turning around and showing people the middle finger.
This is about a guy who says: "Yes we thought we could develop the thing in 7 months", then: "No, I never expected we could finish the game in that time" the following sentence and "I don't know how much time it takes to make a game, nobody knows!" to top it off, after he's been doing games for decades. In an industry where other people manage to take a proper guess as well. This is a guy who promised they wouldn't go to a publisher for the game, yet did anyway. Early on. A guy who said they were going to focus on the PC version an turned around, and abandoned it in favor of a mobile version and pretty much had to bring in a guy who had been doing it for free to finally start fixing it. 3 years later. A guy who is also lying about when said person came into the team. And that isn't even talking about the Cube winner thingie.
I'm sorry, but at some point the question "Are you a pathological liar PM?" is absolutely warranted.
