Just seen Mumei's post in the Euro thread... I got Red Scarlet chills.
It's especially annoying considering Duckroll himself used the word dick as a slur in the forum's Member Etiquette FAQ:
Be polite, please
In general when posting in threads, don't be a dick. Be respectful of other fellow members, and learn to argue against the points in a discussion without making it personal or insulting the other party. Present your points well and others will respect your opinion more. Using proper grammar and avoiding typos will also make it easier for others to understand your message.
IMO every word like c*nt can be a slur for a type of person, e.g. retard, whore (as in attention-whore etc) and so on. I'm not even sure c*nt is that offensive in the US, let alone everywhere else, but then I don't make the rules.

Don't know if it was posted yet. Lock, ups, ignore if old.

Watford have confirmed the Pozzo family have completed their takeover of the club.

The Watford Observer revealed this morning that the takeover was completed in the early hours and the Hornets have released a brief statement confirming the deal is done, subject to Football League approval.

It read: “The club is today (Friday) delighted to confirm that the agreement for the transfer of ownership of Watford Football Club has been completed, subject to Football League approval.

The change will see the club owned by the Pozzo Family following Laurence Bassini's tenure at Vicarage Road.

Further information will be released soon here at watfordfc.com The club would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding during recent times and look forward to releasing further details in due course.”

- Just to warn our readers in advance, we will be unable to upload or alter articles for at least ten hours from around 6.45pm tonight (Friday) due to pre-planned maintenance work. The comment function may also be unavailable until Saturday afternoon.

Interesting.

I don't know who the Pozzo family are. Are they rich? Will my home town get back into the PL?

Also, happy birthday Cheryl Cole. <3

From what I gather it's extremely offensive in the US because it refers to a vagina. I'm pretty sure it's the only place where it's used with that meaning though. The Oxford dictionary defines it as "an unpleasant or stupid person"!

I could kind of understand it if the problem was it was being used to maliciously attack or refer to female posters on Gaf but it really isn't. In these threads where it's used the most it's only ever used to refer to males (and rarely in a truly malicious way)!

Euro 2020 is going to be hosted in 12 cities across the continent?

So much will be lost if they do this. Stupid.
Haven't only two proposal's have been submitted? One from Turkey, as a back-up to their Olympic bid, and a joint bid from Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

I guess this is the contingency plan if either of those bid fail, it isn't ideal for the supporters but better than not having a tournament at all.

Pretty much. I don't see why it's so difficult for mods to take things like context and surroundings into account when deciding to ban people just on the use of a word. A blanket ban on "cunt" just screams "PC gone mad!" to me.

Horrid false consciousness and lexicographic reparation payments in that post.

I plan to mind my language, but that is drivel.

Out of pure curiosity, how did you end up supporting Newcastle?

Actually? How did most of Footy-Gaf end up supporting their club?

I think they are also involved with Udinese. They are quite wealthy I think, not super rich...but Watford needed saving and and they've stepped in. Good news.

You're from Watford huh? I went to 6th form there. Shit place.

Yep, and UEFA really backed Turkey for that so they're a bit pissed off now.

I think this would be a bad idea. Logistics would be a mess and I'm not sure it works financially either. They're better off giving it to Spain who haven't had a tournament for 30 years I think. Nice grounds, good transport, strong market. Even England could do it. Makes more sense than this anyway.

European big cities aren't that far from each other.

Far enough to be a complete inconvenience. Sure travelling from Poland to Donetsk won't exactly have been easy in these Euro's either but at least anyone travelling to Poland and Ukraine will have known where they'll be based, where there matches will be played and where and when they need to be to watch their team.

There's a significant difference between even that, and being in Moscow one week, Barcelona the next and Istanbul after that. As an example.

I think it's a cynical attempt by UEFA to encourage the same cash driven "bidding" process as the tournament hosting in the first place, with host cities having to pucker up whatever arse kissing is necessary to please those fucking pirates, and I think along with extending the tournament to 24 teams it will devalue and dilute the entire competition.

A blanket ban on words is crazy to me. The use of it goes way beyond the meaning of it in the US. I think I have a problem with this because it seemes to be from a purely US perspective where I'd argue it only has one use over there. Over here it can almost be a term of endearment ( calling someone a 'jammy cunt' if they get lucky in the casino etc etc).

I don't know man, seems crazy to me that in such a global forum we will ban words because they are bad in the US. Obviously If I was actually in America I wouldn't use it because I recognize it has different connotations etc etc but here it should be fair game.

I only lived there for 2 years or so and didn't even follow football when I was there. Moved to Watford and when my classmates in secondary school were all into football I decided to check it out and figured I'd support Newcastle since I used to live there.

It was love at first sight. The 5-0 against Man United was one of my first games I think. I remember we had a Sky box but we didn't have Sky Sports channels, so I was just staring at a barcode screen listening to Martin Tyler being awesome.

I don't think it's too much to ask for Football-GAF to refrain form using that word considering that there may be female US members who feel offended by the use of that word.

Cool story :D

Mine is pretty simple, born here. Live here.

Torres to pull a Trezeguet. Score in the last minute, move to Juve.
He's almost as old and expensive as RVP, lol.

Desperation is kicking in, I'll take him.

Not really interesting, from Liverpool and my Dad is a red.

My dad and his brother used to go to every home game (Liverpool and Everton), and despite supporting Liverpool at first, my Uncle turned to Everton early on.

My two brothers are reds, and my sister is a blue. My two cousins with the bitter Dad are also blue.

All my family in Ireland support Liverpool, mainly so they can come over for a piss up.

Huh. That's a good question, unfortunately I can't give a very good answer, because I don't remember. I can't really think of a moment where I thought “I'm going to support Chelsea”, its always been kinda natural for me.

It was probably my dad's influence, his family have been a Chelsea supporting once since before WW2, but I can't really remember a specific point in time that resulted in me supporting Chelsea. One of my earliest photos, taken when I was four, is of me wearing the '97 kit, so I guess I've just gone from there.

The influence of that period is still present, with Gianfranco Zola being my favourite ever player. I just remember feeling this unexplained joy when watching Chelsea, and that same joy is still present today. I just have always loved the club, pure and simple.

My mum was/ is a big Ajax fan. Collected every news article about the club when she was growing up, that kinda rubbed of.

All my family on my Mother's side are from the East End, I was born in Barking, lived in Redbridge, went to my first game with my Grandad (he was a Leyton Orient fan, but supported the Hammers too) and just sort of naturally gravitated towards West Ham, as they were the big club in the area, but I still have a lot of fondness of Orient, the Daggers, and my current local team, Southend.

My first game at the Boleyn was a 2-2 draw against Norwich (who, funnily enough, all my family on my Dad's side support) - we went two down, Julian Dicks got sent off for foul & abusive language right in front of me, because a Norwich player was taking too long making a throw-in, and then super sub Tony Cottee came on and scored two in the last 15 minutes.

Ermm, reading that post, it would seem that it's got nothing to do with the word itself, it's about name-calling when you get into arguments with other posters. It would seem that we can still call John Terry a cunt till the sun swallows up the earth?

Also, I'm no authority on it just by being American, but women in the States do get extremely offended by the word. However, I think simply offending people isn't enough of a reason to censor something - there needs to be something wrong on a much deeper level, like racism, homophobia, actual misogyny, etc.

I don't think there's anybody here who would dispute that JT is one, constantly and permanently.

The same is very nearly true of Suarez.

Nah he had a go at a poster for calling Ballotelli the 'count of cunts'. Basically any use of the word apart from another word for vagina is banned now. Even though I have yet to see a poster, male or female, express offence towards it (before today)

Where is this post? I missed it.

Even with my Liverpool-bias, Terry is 10 times the cunt Suarez is, or any other player in the PL for that matter.

Wait, so it's okay for cunt to refer to a vagina. Is calling a person in the public eye a vagina now bannable? It's bannable as being a sexist slur... so calling someone a dick would be as well, as only men have dicks, right?

I so confuse

"When you use it to refer to someone or something you do not like, you are implicitly insulting all of the women on this board for their sex." What a load of old cock.

"Sexual, racial, or ethnic slurs will not be tolerated in any form and are bannable on the first offense." Surely a sexual slur is calling somebody a faggot or something of that ilk, which I get. But cunt?

Excuse me, as owner of a penis, or "cock" as you so crudely state, I am extremely insulted by this gender slur upon my person. I'm on the phone to Red Scarlet as we speak.
