Such a shame too. At Newcastle he displayed pretty good pace when he needed to. Plus his finishing was sublime and with aplomb. I'm hoping he works back to that kind of guy when we get him back. He was in better shape physically before being at Liverpool.
His top speed's adequate, but his acceleration really isn't, and I guess his size is part of that (although a player like Van Persie doesn't struggle in the acceleration department like Carroll does). Unfortunately it's those first 5-10 yards that Rodgers probably values because of his pressing game.

And honestly I can't imagine Carroll finishing particularly astutely. He just hits the ball with as much power as he can muster, which to be fair is quite a lot, but when it comes to sticking the ball anywhere with much precision he seems to struggle. There was that embarrassing moment when he won the penalty against Chelsea in the Carling Cup, had the stones to grab the ball and demand he take it, then fucking hoofs it straight down the middle with an emphasis on power, which the keeper stopped easily. Honestly the best way I'd describe Carroll in the box is like a defender, I don't see any innate ability to find the net like you would with most strikers. It never looks natural to him.

He was on his way to being the next Shearer for us. Oh well.

The question is: If he returns, will he fit in our style of play? I'm thinking he's a Shola upgrade.

Shola upgrade is probably right, yeah. He'll be that guy you'll want to lay off passes to the faster players. Cisse, Ben Arfa, etc. from Cabaye/Tiote balls. Pretty much route one stuff but Carroll used to be able to play well when we played on the deck too. Maybe he can pick that up again and get involved with our more fast-paced build up play style that Cabaye and Tiote specialise in.

We'll see I guess. I whole-heartedly believe that Carroll still has the potential to be a top quality player with a well-rounded skill set. We saw a rough version of this broad class before he went to Liverpool. We'll see that again in the future, I'm sure.

7-1. All our young players played quite well! Matri caught the Krasic syndrome it seems?

Best shirt in YEARS.

The Anfield Wrap touched on this and I have to agree that it's a bit of a misnomer. What you and others are describing is a plan B, of sorts. The point is to have multiple systems and setups within Plan A to prevent ever needing a Plan B. It shouldn't be the case of 'oh we can't pass it through them, get Carroll on and hoof it'. It should be a case of bringing on a different option, but one that fits into our system. Not throwing the system out at 60 minutes because we can't pass our way through West Brom.

The idea is to have a fucking boss Plan A so you don't need a player like Carroll.

The thing is though, we've seen that he is able to close down effectively. His work rate improved massively towards the end of the season and he was putting himself all about the pitch. He was also dropping deeper and linking play quite nicely. He isn't as bad with his feet as a lot of people think. The main problem I have with him is that his movement once he has dropped deeper is fucking awful.

I honestly would like to give him a bit longer, but if Newcastle came up with £17m, I can see how hard that would be to turn down.

Call me crazy but I think he'll be gold again under Pardew, his home town and players like Cabaye around him.

He also has something to prove, considering Cisse and Ba are our first team starters.

Come back home Andy!

Hiram Mier injured for the match vs Spain. :(

I can't criticise his work rate post the Newcastle game, but I don't believe we have the same thing in mind when we think of closing down effectively. All players can close down if they're told to, but there's a process to Carroll's movement that dictates just how quickly, and thus effectively he can do this. There's a clear winding up motion to the way Carroll picks up speed, his legs are long and they take longer to cover shorter distances. I don't see Carroll gelling with the rest of our attackers in a high pressing situation.

His movement's poor in deeper areas, but it's been equally as atrocious in and around the box. The amount of times I've screamed at the telly for him to get in a position, or when a cross has been put in and he's ambling around the edge of the area, I don't have faith in his ability to be a consistent goalscorer.

Keep thinking like that and show us the money.

Would seem Chelsea are trying to kick FFP up the balls with all these sponsorship deals. Just signed another, Gazprom energy.

Currently sitting at, Samsung, Adidas, Audi, Delta, Singha, Thomas Cook Sport, Sauber F1 and Gazprom. Gotta get that money.

I thought Gazprom were owners of Zenit St Petersburg, and were a rival company to Abramovic's?

CL must have done wonders for them

Not sure. I know the chairman is a shareholder at Arsenal though.

Edit: Also,

Gazprom last week also confirmed an agreement with UEFA to become an official partner of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup for the next three seasons.

Barcelona/Unicef-esque conspiracy theories incoming if Chelsea can win the UCL again in that time?

^^ KAGAWA!!!

Can't wait for tomorrow's match. Get Dat Chicha and Kagawa partnership running.

According to Miguel Delaney (reporter) Swansea are close to signIng Michu from la Liga club Rayo Valenco. Was the highest scoring midfielder outside of the top 2 clubs and a lot of the top clubs were interested. Great signing if they pull this off.

Does Hernandez have a partnership with anyone? I've never noticed him playing any better with any particular strike partner. Seems like his skillset is completely individualistic

He was great with Rooney in behind him. Though he has to improve outside of the box. At the moment he's a clinical finisher and thats why I can see Kagawa having a partnership with him similar to the one he had with Lowendowski. Though when the season starts, it'll most likely be Rooney and Kagawa

I don't think Kagawa ever had a partnership with Lowendowski.

And what does Lewandowski have to do with Hernandez, anyway? If you think Lewandowski is a clinical finisher like Hernandez, you better check your facts...

not sure if serious..

His game seems to be almost entirely based on finding the danger zones in the box, and putting the ball in the back of the net. Admirable qualities that we needed last season, but from what I can tell he contributes little in terms of buil-up play or getting the players around him involved.

Hernandez's skills suit him and the team as a whole, but do not help other players to show their ability, apart from the guy with the assist. Individualistic skillset

So I just saw on SSN that we're offering some cash upfront on a loan deal with an option to buy at the end of the season for Carroll.

WHOOOOO A SIGNING!!!

AyBDeIfCQAACgdX.jpg:large

Curtis Anderson - Goalkeeper.

£15,000 o____O

I am desperate for signings :(:(

Found a little story about him complete with the lowest res images I've ever seen on a news site: http://www.nwemail.co.uk/sport/curt...-joined-man-city-1.976516?referrerPath=sport/

It is all a far cry from Longlands Park, where the youngster started off as a five-year-old with Crooklands Casuals, having gone along with his friends from Yarlside School.

It was here – with dad Terry, a stalwart at Cassies, his coach – he found himself in goal for the first time, on a road which would lead him to Manchester City, but which started in a far from perfect fashion.

“Curtis’s first game for Crooklands was a 23-0 hiding off an outstanding Furness Rovers side, which could have been the end of his time as a goalkeeper after only one match,” recalls Terry.

Still no goals for City, mostly subs on now. Oh well, better to suck it up in games that don't matter! Surely a bit frustrating for Roberto and co though.

Didn't watch much of Dortmund so I assumed He had a partnership with Lowendowski last season and again he seemed like a decent finisher from what I've seen. If your saying he's not then your probably right.

Hopefully Villa's return sparks a rebirth for Pedro. He plays much better when its MVP (Messi/Villa/Pedro)
This attack is brilliant. Though Sanchez should play in the team. Pedro could find it hard to get into the team but he should play ahead of Tello. Great movement and finishing up front.

Seems West Ham are not interested in Berbatov.

so for £15 we got Chili beef, crispy beef in OK sauce, fried rice, chips and prawn crackers.

And we're stuffed.
That sounds excellent. I had a pork casserole for my tea that was sumptuous, ate a ton of strawberry Onken for pudding.
