I've just done my calculations and we've spent 29m net from 2009-2013, an average net spend of £5.8m per year since we sold Ronaldo for a record breaking 80m, bringing in a record 70m+ net profit for one transfer window.
To put it into context, Real Madrid have had a net spend of £271.22m in the same period if we exchange € into £ at the current exchange rate, although the Euro was stronger for the majority of the period I'm comparing. That's an average net spend of £54.244m a season.
Remember when the Glazer family promised to spend the Ronaldo money on world class players? Where are all those world class players? We've signed one since, on the cheap.

"A substantial number of world-class players have been brought to the club in the past few years and that will still be the case.
"Sir Alex Ferguson is in total control of his squad. He is empowered to make whatever decisions he thinks are in the best interests of Manchester United. That continues to be the case.
"The fact is that Cristiano Ronaldo decided, after six years, that it was time to move on and the manager said OK.
"The idea that Manchester United are motivated by a debt burden is just not true. It is not an issue."
The last part is correct, the debt isn't an issue. The issue is the Glazers who are only in this for a profit.
You also have to take into account that we've lost many of our highest earners in that period, I'd imagine Ronaldo was on £110k a week, VDS on 70k, Hargreaves on 80k, Scholes on 50k, Owen on 40k, Park on 60k Berbatov on 110k and Tevez who was technically on the pay roll at about 120k.
A lot of those players have been replaced with players who are on half the wages.
