I dunno if it was just confidence. The way that he just paused halfway into the opposition half every time seemed like there was something else that he was trying to do that never came off. Not sure if he was supposed to switch play or cross early or be waiting for Rafael but it looked like we'd realised his playing it past people in the exact same way each time wasn't working but he couldn't do anything else so just faltered.

You might be right though but can't see why his confidence would've fallen after the great season he had.

Valencia's issue is a mental one, not everyone in the world finding him out at the same time.

My diagnosis is that he's realised he's a one trick pony so he's attempting to adapt his game to become more multifaceted, but his brain doesn't work quickly enough so he just stands there thinking about what to do for 3 seconds.

Him standing there doing nothing is an entirely new thing. He didn't do that in 11/12. If he actually continued to play like he did in 11/12, he'd still be fucking amazing.
