Russia's flat tax on income is 13% so it looks like Eto'o must be making €22.6m gross. If/when Ronaldo isn't eligible for the Beckham law any longer, he would have a higher wage. Messi should be on around €22.9m gross if he is being taxed at 43% as expected, so presumably he is actually the highest paid player in the world if his net is €16m.

Anyone reading David Peace's Red or Dead? I enjoyed The Damned United and the ardently socialist Bill Shankly is a man who is difficult not to admire. The Guardian ran a pretty swell review too:

...

For of all the forms of love there are in this world there is none so cruelly, gleefully unrequited as the love of a fan for a Premier League club. Fans will go to the grave decked in club scarves, the club anthem their eternal ringtone. Clubs reciprocate that love in ways that make Enron look like the Salvation Army. The Premier League is not a metaphor of a dysfunctional society, it is its fullest expression – a grotesquely overpaid, underperforming elite utterly disconnected from the communities from which its clubs take their names.

...

This is an openly hagiographical work. There are scenes here of Shankly remembering each of his players in his prayers, almost as shocking to the modern reader as Leopold Bloom masturbating must have been to the reader of nearly a 100 years ago.

...

For a long time now literary fiction has concerned itself with telling it like it is – with power, corruption and lies – or telling it like it was – Tudors. This isn't a book about the way things were or the way things are. This is a book about the way things should be

Walter Smith stepping down as chairman, fuck.

I'm seriously worried at the lack of actual Rangers men left at the club, and the number of scumbag leeches left. Why the fuck is Charles Green still even slightly involved.

Says he gets a higher percentage of his image rights (was 60/40 Ronaldo). I am having trouble determining whether or not he could still get away with 25% tax or not. It looks like from what I can tell, that tax rate is only available for the first 5 years of living there. If he keeps that €17m net, his gross would have to balloon from €21.25m to €24.3m a year. Either way, he'd be on over €400k a week now. That would mean that Messi and Neymar are both on over €360k a week gross.

how much was cr7 earning all these years? 10m euros per year?

17m is too much and he'll be what? 33 when this deal is finished? bad deal by madrid

instead sell cr7 next summer, buy bale (younger) next summer and pay him 9m euros a year

Honda update. His agent says this is an "important" week for Honda and that there will be "developments" by this weekend, and Mediaset reports that Galliani is increasing our offer.

I've read the first half so far (Everyday is Saturday) and it's been an excellent read. The man is a real club legend and it's no surprise that his name is still sung on the Kop. For me he's one of the greatest managers of all time along with Bob Paisely and his quotes are still legendary.

Any Liverpool fan worth his salt should know all about Shanks and what he has done for our club.

"A lot of football success is in the mind. You must believe you are the best and then make sure that you are. In my time at Liverpool we always said we had the best two teams on Merseyside, Liverpool and Liverpool Reserves."

@anyone who ordered BT Sport, how long did it take to activate the channels?

Wanna leave it til the last moment to make sure I don't get charged for a month if I've only had it for 2 weeks come the season opener.

Posted this in the MLS thread, but Jeff may be interested as well..
Former Orlando City SC Defender Yann Songo’o has officially been signed by English Championship side Blackburn Rovers F.C. after spending time with the club on trial.

The 21 year old impressed the right people at Blackburn, appearing in matches against Wrexham, Portimonense and Fleetwood in friendlies over the past couple of weeks.
Songo'o was on loan from Sporting Kansas City but was recalled and then released. Looks like it has worked out well for him in the end.

TalkSport say we are holding Wayne Rooney prisoner and should let him go for the good of the Premier League and the good of England.

Durham is on a classic wind up.

The first problem is listening to Talksport. It's a terrible radio show purely aimed at the lowest common denominator. Not only that but they flat out make stuff up to get listeners and people phoning in.

LOL.

A guy just rang in and said Rooney hasn't been the same player since he asked to move away 2 years ago, Durham started laughing so the guy tried to explain himself, they hung up mid sentence.

Durham is a arsehole he's banging on about how Rooney should be at Chelsea, one of them guys who just can't be wrong in their own eyes.

man I completely forgot about Inigo Martinez. La Liga-gaf, anyone of you kept an eye on him in the last season? How did he do? I recall him being one of the many younger coming talents in the league, sadly I didn't observe him at all last season.

Barca kit:

I'll have a large #1 with a sweet tea and a 20 piece nugget with hot mustard and sweet n' sour.

Yeah he said £30m is "crazy money" for him.

Should be £40m MINIMUM for him if he's going to Chelsea.

I don't see why they don't just name their price and take our monies. This transfer is happening.

The mobile site is acting up for me. Anyone else?
