Really?
Name a player who would want to come and be 4th choice who is available at a realistic price? Remember this player would need to be better than Sagna at that position.
If we see Sagna as a 4th choice CB now then we need a new RB who can displace Jenkinson or cover for him if he's injured.
I don't like the idea of having a smaller squad but have lots of versatile players to cover for each other. All it takes is a few injuries to your most versatile players and it all collapses on its head.
For example, Wenger saw Ox as covering for 2 positions (the wings and CM). He gets injured and suddenly we are not just short in one area of the field but both.
If Sagna was to get injured then suddenly we look very short at CB (with Verms being out for a while) AND at RB where only Jenkinson is competent.
Podolski gets injured and suddenly we are not only short on the LW but also upfront as Wenger saw him as a striker as well.
A club of our stature should not just have 16 squad players all of whom are utility players. You should have 16-20 specialists who know their positions/roles inside-out and then 1 or 2 versatile utility players who can cover for a number of players in the event of an injury crisis or for squad rotation purposes.
Its like Wenger wants as small a squad possible where everyone is a utility player. The problem is that since everyone is covering for each others positions the more versatile players end up with more minutes in total. This means more injuries to those individuals because they become more fatigued than anyone else. Players like Podolski/Sagna should not be having to play 90-odd minutes 3 times a week in different positions.
Its madness and we are already seeing that it will cause chaos if we have a few of the so called versatile super quality players get injuries.
