B-Rod fell apart when he abandoned both philosophies that had made it feel like we were on the right track
Swansea-type possession play - Wasn't massively effective, but we had a direction we were going in, it was okay to watch and you could see it would work much better with a few tweaks to the personnel. Backed up by a great January window, which saw our form massively improve.
Balls-out attacking - Ridiculously exciting, effective in attack while shite at the back, not obsessed with controlling games but there was a flow to our attacking play, everyone in that front 6 knew what one-another was doing.
After that, it's just been a mess. Lost Suarez which obviously had a massive impact, but instead of even trying to replace him with someone who could take his place in the system, Rodgers (and the committee?) threw the baby out after selling the bathwater, and we ended up with no philosophy whatsoever. 11 players just smashed together in hope rather than expectation.
Had a brief revival when we changed to the back 3, but our attacking play was still massively basic and clanky, akin to hitting our heads against a brick wall until eventually dislodging a brick.
Once teams figured out how to play against that though, we tanked again, and went into a downward spiral due to the cloud of negativity around the place, and frankly incredible lack of fortitude throughout the squad.
While we're not unsalvagably off the pace in the league this season, there's been very little to indicate that much has changed from last year in these aspects. Which is clear when you look at our results over the last 6 games.
In 5 of them, we've taken the lead and lost it, ending the match 1-1. In all 5 of those, we have been playing against teams where there is no excuse for scoring less than two. Sion, Norwich, Carlisle ffs. Everton are a good team and we were away, but 3 of their back 4 were second choice, and they played in a way that should have given us numerous chances on the counter.
Our attacking play was essentially broken over the last 15 months or so, and Klopp (hopefully) will have a tough job on his hands to fix that quickly enough for us to have a good season, bearing in mind that we don't have the individual quality in attack any more to essentially sacrifice whatever defensive solidity we have.
I like Rodgers and thought there was a small chance of him turning things around right to the end, but there's no denying that he got most things badly wrong in the last 15 months.
