Well I enjoyed Braga stepping up to the plate because just having 3 tops teams is pretty boring. I used to enjoy Boavista doing the same when I first started watching.

Speaking of which, I wonder what Pacheco is up to nowadays. He was always a coach I admired, always wanted him to coach us

Pacheco is awful. Boavista only stepped up because they were aided by corruption. That's all.

2006–2008 - Boavista
2008–2009 - Belenenses
2009–2010 - Al-Shabab
2011–2013 - Beijing Guoan

Cheers. What counts as an acceptable hard drive these days, bearing in mind that I (illogically, tbf) hate deleting and redownloading games to free up space when needed?

I have all my Steam games installed (332) and that takes up 1.15TB of data. I am crazy and won't delete any games but that is how big it is.

Good point with the Bluray. The default customisation options with the X51 seem pretty poor, but I have no clue whatsoever what the going rate is for anything. I think I'd like the same RAM in the PC as the PS4, as long as it was upgradable in case PC gaming advances faster than expected

Balls to Alienware then. What's the point in paying a premium price for components that they've skimped out on in one instance, and gone over the top in the other. Do you know if there's a website that lists every consumer-available comonenent in order of general quality, which you then check and it lets you know if they're all compatible with one-another? I'm petrified of making the jump and doing it all wrong :p

Because I'm a pussy :p

Fuck Portugal, but I'd rather they were at the World Cup than not

My recommendation:

- 600W PSU (could go as low as 500W if you really wanted)
- An Ivy Bridge i7 3770 at 3.4GHZ
- A GTX 680 with 4GB GDDR5 (some come with 2GB just so you know)
- A socket 1155 motherboard that isn't too costly
- 8GB DDR3 RAM
- A 1TB HDD
- A case
- A Blu Ray player (yes, they should be fairly cheap these days and it's what consoles will have)

What you've got there will neatly outstrip the next gen consoles before they've even released.

Now you can buy parts separately and get someone to build (so much cheaper it's not even funny) or you can get something approximate to the above pre built but for much more money.

If you really want I'll help you pick individual parts if you want to go for the cheaper option.

Going to see Jonathan Wilson talk tonight, if the weather doesn't go completely shit.

Any questions ?

Should I ask whether 90m shekels would turn Arsenal into world-beaters ?

Cheers Laboured

When you do it yourself, do you have to mess about with soldering, efficient spacing to fit it in the case, fans blowing on the right things and stuff like that?

Also, when you have an idea of what you want, can you fire an email to the place you want to build it to make sure all the components are compatible with eachother?

And are the important parts of that easily upgradable?

Actually, is there a forum/service we could use where it would just be you guys helping me out.? I imagine this is all horrendously boring to 99% of footy-gaf, and I don't want to start a thread on here for 2 reasons:

1) The very real possibility that I don't go though with it
2) I'd rather get the opinions of 3 or 4 people than 4,000 :p

England's midfield for todays game is horrendous.

Young, Cleverley, Chamberlain, Lampard

Chamberlain should be with the u21s, Young should not even be in the squad.

Definitely.

Also ask who the biggest is in the Guardian showers. My money's on Glendenning.

These people know what they are doing. Ask your questions here. You could start with the builds that are in the OP, you're easily in the Enthousiast build category with your budget.

If Gerrard wasn't captain, I'd be a bit annoyed that he's travelled. But then again, Roy probably wants him for the Montenegro game and therefore wants him for the whole training schedule

Fucking hate games against San Marino

Concede a goal: Fail
Score less than 6: Fail
Play well: Who gives a shit?
Play badly: End of the world
Score: Well done, nice stat improvement, nobody cares, move along.

Ask him why he is a miserable cunt that hates everything SAFC despite calling himself a fan?

Honestly, the build a PC thread in gaming side is absolutely excellent and extremely informative.

To answer your questions:

1. No soldering nor any great need to care about space unless you decide to go for one of those small cases. Normal tower cases have tonnes of room and often come with fans.

2. I've never done it but I would imagine they'd be very likely to help you out since they want your custom! If you've got any uncertainties then try the GAF thread or PM me.

3. Tough question. Most are. RAM is, hard drive is, GPU usually is. CPUs can be problematic though and when a new one comes out they sometimes require you to have a whole new motherboard to go with it. So don't count on being able to upgrade your CPU when the next big thing comes round - not that you'll need to because the CPU I listed shits all over the ones in the next gen consoles. In truth upgrading most parts is very easy on PC - the CPU being the only really scary one. It's usually slot in and switch the PC on.

Thanks again. I'll save all the useful posts and carry on looking into it while I find out about my housing situation, which is looking more promising than it was, but still isn't certain :p

3 incredibly basic questions that will see my laughed off the forum:

1) What's the difference between a mechanical keyboard and a normal one?
2) Are Turtle Beaches good enough for PC gaming, some of those other headsets are like £100
3) Is a 1080p-capable Bravia as good a monitor as a specialised one? Also, do most of the relevant components come with a HDMI port as default now?

If I dismantled the XPS and put it back together, d'you reckon that could give me enough experience to do the same with building a new PC?

1. Mechanicals are much, much nicer to use rather than membrane ones. You have to use one to appreciate it.
2) They're alright, bit over-rated.
3) Bravia is fine (a proper monitor is better obviously), and everything has HDMI now as well as DVI and Display Port usually.

Building yourself is easy, and fun. Dismantling will give you an idea, it's all pretty easy. Only bit I've ever had bother with is the cooler, can help to have someone around if it's anything bar say a stock Intel one as they can be tricky buggers at times. Make sure you do it. What is your budget? Looking to go small form factor?

1. The feel. They're heavier and require a bit more force to use. Much better build quality and will last you much longer. Some people just prefer the feel of them.

2. No idea, but loooking at them they look like overkill :lol Yes they'd work just fine for PC gaming.

3. In a word, no. BUT I'm sure a 1080p bravia will tie you over until you decide you'd like to jump into the world of monitors. Monitors usually come smaller than TVs and concentrate heavily on picture quality, colour quality and reducing frame lag. Yes, any component worth its salt will have a HDMI port (both monitors and GPUs).

If it's gaming just get an i5, fuck optical drives.

I'd go i7 due to hyper threading. My guess being this'll help a bit when games become 8 core specialised.

I suppose it depends if he wants his PC to be all in one media centre and gaming machine. I know Hitcher has a PS3 so maybe he won't want a Blu Ray player. I agree fuck optical drives but they're not quite obsolete just yet.

Preferably, although if I think I can build it myself, I'd rather go large for the security blanket of the extra space :p

Got a week off at the end of April and 2 weeks at the end of June.

Think I might shop around in April, see how much the PS4 will set me back by, and go about building it in June

How do warranties work when you're building your own btw? Do you just have to hope you don't irreperably fuck it up? Also, do modern motherboards come equipped with surge protectors? I thought the XPS had one, and the plug it was running fom had one, but it still got killed :(

(It wasn't very good anyway)

Did you ever play FEAR btw? Were the frame rate issues a problem with the game, or with the system?

Okami HD coming to PS+. Gonna give it a try at last, heard its about 30 hours too long and the tutorial takes about 5 hours

1. A normal one usually has rubber under the keys and need more "effort" to push down for it to register, giving it a mushy feel. A mechanical clickety clackity keyboard will register much faster. Personally this does not justify a $100 price tag
2. I loathed my TB X11. Get something like a Sennheiser.
3. LG/Samsung/Sony etc. are all fine. Not all the monitors have an HDMI port but most do.

With GPUs most of the manufacturer's have their own warranty schemes, I think it's XFX who have a really good one. Think it'll be down to who you buy from for other parts.

It's very hard to fuck parts up when building a PC. They're more sturdy than you'd think.

This.

I built mine just over a year ago and it was great fun getting everything together and building it by myself. Ran into one problem with a fan and CPU but trial and error and I got it working perfectly. Best money I've ever spent and it can run everything, looking at upgrading this year/early next year (depends when PS4 launches). I'm already excited :p

Getting two IPS monitors within the next few weeks too because I'll be moving to dual screen from my 40" Samsung tv which will be downstairs in our house when we move.

That is true, but it could be a good while off yet before games properly utilise multithreaded CPUs. The Xeon E3's are worth a look too as they offer i7 performance at i5 money if you're not looking to overclock.

As for optical drives, there is literally no need for them now. Without any hyperbole I've not needed to use one in years.

By June Intel will have new CPUs out, I'd think about waiting and just buying at that time if you can't build until then.

Warranties are great for building yourself, each component will have it's own. Typically your CPU is 5 years, RAM is lifetime, PSU is 5 years, varies from bit to bit though. Nope, no surge protectors but even the ones from Homebase will work fine.

I'd imagine the issues were with the system, never had any issues when I played it myself.

Don't you guys get a SSD drive when you buy a new PC?

Yes, it is a must.

XFX are dog shit in the UK for GPU support. If it goes wrong after a year (that is after the seller is finished their obligations) you're on your own

@Hitcher - if you've got the spare money from saving by doing a self build, get an SSD. These things are fucking fantastic and make things run so smooth. I have a 120GB SSD for my operating system and the a 2TB HDD for storage. Poifect.

Depends on the PSU, they vary a lot in quality. SSD is a flash storage drive, you can boot Windows in around 5 seconds with them. They're heavenly.

What is your budget btw? I'll throw something together quickly, hopefully you won't miss the post like you did last time I tried this :( :p
