I think we all know who the hardcore guys in this thread are. The GT boys are also the most vocal and hardcore out of the two camps.

It hasn't been fixed.

betrayer of hope is clearly a lost soul, metalmurphy is just a super fan! a real hero of the gt kingdom

Racing games in general sound bad, it's like they invest 1000 hours on visuals and only 10 on sounds.

GT5 on select models sound OK, but without upgrades, once you change the exaust, it's like you've installed a vacuum cleaner. Sounds need to be dirtier in general.

Forza and Shift do some things better, but it's not like it's as good as those games have pushed visually.

I think capturing other sounds other than the engines is what makes it difficult. Also, we are used to hearing this in real life through on board cameras, which have terrible capture qualities, so we expect "real" sounds to be pitched differently than when you record straight from the dyno.

It's just that is incredibly difficult to "digitize" (i dunno what's the official term is) the recordings into the actual game engine. It's impossible to record all audio under all circumstances and properly blend them together in the game (not to mention it would be incredibly expensive resource wise to store all that for use), so the sounds need to be digitized so that the output can match exactly what the car engine is doing. Imo the Forza games do a better job at that, but both use the same technique.

The games that do sound great, they "fake" their sounds. What you hear isn't exactly what you should be hearing considering what the car is doing.

However I think there are other sounds, not even engine related, that neither game has that should definitely be added to both games that add alot more immersion to racing games. Just look at something like Dirt or Supercar Challenge.

Sounds better (and not always). It doesn't sound great. The examples you yourself posted show just that.

You think that's what a Ford GT sounds like? And you have the freaking car in your avatar. At low RPMs even GT5 sounds much better.

In the old days of fanboyism you know back in the ps1, n64 era fanboys had the decency to not show their face for a couple of days when they get wounded this badly.

Nowadays people are just suckers for shaming.

I repeat and repeat to all the fanboys of the copycat wannabe series. Bring me something that can rival this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQO6JHZl-Cs

You have all the time on earth.

Congratulations you're now the saddest person I've seen in this entire thread.

You do realize that you are in fact a fanboy yourself right?

Clearly you've never played Forza 4 the video compression, including uploading to Youtube, doesn't do the sound any favors and without a doubt Forza 4 does sound great.

Ferrari Challenge has awesome sounds of raindrops :)

On the serious note, allocation of actual RAM for sounds purposes is not very generous in GT games, historically. And PS3 split-RAM also didn't help on that particular issue.

Hopefully, the future will be more generous on that field.

And regarding this discussion, I see conversation has moved from graphics to sounds. I predict physics next and after that I would propose FFB wheel support and linearity issues. Just sayin.

Fuck it, I'll bite. Undoubtedly the biggest factor for a racing sim is physics. Everything else contributes to the feel and immersion but physics and driving model trump all. GT5 still beats Forza, although the progress Forza has made game to game makes me think this might not be so cut and dry next iteration.

Graphics, you can nit pick IQ things like aliasing, tearing, shadows, etc but the entire world of GT5 has the better lighting engine by leaps and bounds. So it doesn't matter if you are in photo mode, driving a premium car or sad face standard car, every second of your experience looks better in GT5. In real time, in replays, in photos. Lighting is king and GT5 has it mastered.

Sounds, Forza wins by a long shot. GT is still a laughing stock when it comes to sound. It is an embarrassment to any fan of the series and is absolutely inexcusable for a dev as prestigious and wealthy as PD to put out such awful sounds FX in their games over and over. This does break some of the immersion for me in GT5. Luckily the above two "wins" out weigh the lack luster sound. I am a huge critic of GT sound and I find defense of it silly.

GT5 is better looking and moreover, better driving. Forza owns in sound and gameplay features. GT5 is the better racing sim, Forza is the better racing video game. Whatever is more important to you will determine which one is the better game. I need the feel of the cars and accurate tracks so I stil prefer GT over Forza on consoles. I buy to drive cars on my favorite tracks, not play MSPaint.

Is that so hard? I'm sorry but if you still want to come in hear and tout Forza graphics and physics, you come off like a dolt. It is still cut and dry. Forza is great in some areas an GT5 is shit in several but some aspects of this debate are so silly. Great, your opinion is , "GT5 looks like shit" awesome you are welcome to have that. But having no leg to stand on makes you look like a butthurt fanboy, and that is ok. We all have games that bring out the irrational hate. I think Super Metroid, Mario Galaxy, and all but one Zelda game are overrated nostalgia laden garbage, but I am never going to try to convince anyone otherwise because it is personal opinion alone. I cannot objectively demonstrate why those games blow. I can only say I don't like those games becuse of me, not because of the games. I see post after post of GT5 gfx superiority but you just keep saying it looks like shit. You can prefer Forza grahics but an objective side by side always puts GT5 in front for gfx. Continuing to bang on like that doesn't mean you can't have an opinion, it just makes your opinion kind of shit. I am all for being proven wrong, but I have seen and experienced the side by side evidence for years now and nothing new on the Forza side had made their game look better than it did when this thread first fired up.

GT6 could be PES2008 to Forza's FIFA08. The changing of the gaurd, but we're not there yet.

I really do hope that PD has hired some western audio specialists for GT6.
It hasn't been working well for them for a long time.

I swear, if the only change in GT6 was a complete audio overhaul, I would be absolutely over the moon.

I also can't wait to hear what FM5 sounds like. It will be glorious!

Edit: I lied. I would also be over the moon if the clutch was fixed :)

y'all should be ashamed
How is the support for Forza 4 these days? Do they actively release any more DLC or event updates, or anything like that?

i have the game and i know the image quality is pretty bad, those shots seem resized from 1080 to 720 to hide aliasing, dw i know it means a hell of a lot to you to make sure gt5 looks its best at all times!

those screens were taken with the ps3 xmb screen capture @ 720p, as were these

I hate these dumb "dick" contests anyway, I'm a car guy and very use to the internal fighting between brands. I'm a Ford guy no doubt but I love the Corvette and everything old school.

I think they are both great games and I would play both if I could but this forum fighting about which is better is just down right dumb.

pretty much agree with all of this

Then why participate in it? I've posted in this thread for a while but I never say anything bad about Forza (at least I don't think I have). You can post in it without throwing daggers back and forth.

We need some new oil on this fire. If neither game is doing 120fps next gen they are both dead to me! Is that the annoying enough for, "PC people?" On a serious note, any die hard racing sim fan needs to try out a racing game at true 120fps. Sooogood.gif

Why can't people enjoy both PC and console racing sims or did I miss a meeting somewhere? It is a shame that a thread like this is going to be worthless if new Forza is next box and GT6 on PS3.

So when someone does throw a dagger saying "thread over" because of a single video I'm not supposed to chime in?

Why stop there? Let's take on PCars too :p (I actually prefer the look of GT5. PCars just has this NFS look to it that makes it look great, but not quite real)

Even with 8xMSAA you will not get a jaggy free image at 720p (Not even @1080p). If anything, TV filters help.

GT5 has really nice IQ for a console game, but of course there is aliasing.

It's just that is incredibly difficult to "digitize" (i dunno what's the official term is) the recordings into the actual game engine. Supercar Challenge had great "chassis sound". I'm not kidding, anybody who has played knows it, and it ads to the immersion.

I understand the reasoning behind the digital sounds, and TBH, i think i would take good fake sounds any day.

You do not want to get in a picture comparison with PCars.

Also if you're going to compare pictures at least use the same car in the same configuration...

jordan-laugh.gif

The lighting is horrible in that video, the car looks like plastic not metal and track is so reflective.

You know I've realised something. This thread has plenty of GT5 gifs but no Forza gifs. Weird.

787B isn't a metal car... Kevlar/carbonfibre composite....

No one here is arguing that Forza 4 has better lighting than GT5 the video was to show the sound of Forza 4 is one of the draws of the game to many racers...

They don't all have the same modes. So you have to get the closest thing.

I'm sure people can live with them not being the exact model. Lets not get that fickle :/

Ferrari 458 is in both games in the same color and configuration, same with a dozen other supercars...

Oh I thought you were comparing graphics. My bad. Mazda 787B is one of the few cars in GT5 that actually sounds great. You could of picked far worse examples.

PCars definitely has more detailed models at least in photomode it seems.

You picked quite possibly some of the worst GT footage on youtube. Evident by the hud being so blurry, all to make GT look bad. Even though there is dozens of youtube links on the last few pages that point to the contrary.

I've noticed Forza fans are way more aggressive in trying to shit on the competition, while the GT fans are more about defending their game. Its actually quite common with Xbox fans in general vs Sony fans.

Oh, that's what you noticed? Lol, perspective is a crazy thing.

Anyway, the IQ of GT is fine. Not great but good enough. There's some annoying shimmer or something going on but I fault myself for setting up my wheel 5 feet from a 73 inch screen. All things considered it holds up well.

Believe me I was trying to be fair on a sound comparison by picking a car in GT5 that was actually done for GT5.
