Forza Horizon |OT| A Whole New Playground

Yup, looking good.

But I'm assuming that's not the in-car FOV we'll get. Because that would be the wrong kind of crazy.

No mention of new cars, but definitely rally upgrades.

Was that GTFOUR in the base Horizon? I don't remember seeing it. Still, great to see the ST185 there.

But I bet we still have the same woeful 22B Impreza model :/ Still looks like it's from Forza 2.

From IGN: http://uk.ign.com/articles/2012/12/14/forza-horizon-rally-expansion-dated-and-detailed-with-trailer

Forza Horizon developers Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios have revealed details of their upcoming Rally expansion pack, out December 18 on Xbox Live Marketplace for 1600 Microsoft Points ($20 USD). The add-on, in fact, goes well beyond the typical car pack. This one actually changes the game by adding co-drivers who shout rally calls, new stages, new online events, and yes, five new cars. Let's break them down:

New Stages

Forza Horizon Rally packs new point-to-point rally stages that span the game's fictional Colorado setting. The stages are "full of severe and sudden terrain changes, including steep banks, narrow tree-lined cuts, big bumps, jumps, drops and natural hazards like rocks and trees," says Horizon design director Ralph Fulton. "In addition, we've got more road surfaces than ever before, on-track vegetation with new physics properties, and new particle and sound effects."

New Cars

Yep, no racing game add-on would be complete without new rides, and Horizon Rally includes five -- all of which have close ties to rally racing. There's the '92 Celica pictured above, the 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII MR, the 2005 Subaru Impreza WRX STi, 1992 Ford Escort RS Cosworth, and 1982 Lancia 027 Stradale. Season Pass owners also get the 2003 Ford Focus SVT. And they're all upgradeable: "You can take the same rally upgrades that are featured in the cars that are packed in with the expansion pack and apply them to any car in your Forza Horizon garage," Fulton explains. "These upgrades include rally tires for improved grip on loose dirt and gravel, springs and dampers that raise and soften the suspension to maintain stability on the most sever off-road terrain, and rally transmissions that feature shorter gear ratios more suited to the quick accelerating nature of rally racing. I think these cross-game upgrades are a game-changer for Horizon – they allow you to upgrade any car you own into a dirt-eating machine for use in the Rally Expansion Pack stages."

Rally Calls

"It’s important for players to heed the warnings and instructions from their navigator," says Fulton. "Ignore a camber warning, for example, and you might find yourself off track completely." One examples a of rally call: "One hundred, easy right, into medium left. Care bumps." Translation: there's a right-hand corner 100 yards ahead you don't have to slow down much for, but it blends into a medium left turn that gets bumpy.

Online Features

It sounds like everyone should be happy in the online department: "We’ll have a new set of rally-themed Rivals events for players to explore, with new Rivals events being added each month," Fulton explains. "In addition, we’ll have two new rally-centric online playlists, one for rally beginners, and one for veterans who know their way around a rally stage."

Finally, Fulton sums up how the rally experience changes Forza Horizon in one sentence: "Rally driving has this strange and thrilling duality that makes the sport unique – you’re constantly focused on what’s happening right now in the car, while simultaneously being mindful of what’s coming next…even if you can’t see it."

Oh my god that sounds awesome. Day one for sure.

And dat Subaru:

Interesting on Co-drivers.

And yes I would be happy id they added more cars in the DLC. The price is indeed big one, I can see everybody saying that it was the price they paid for the game recently etc.

I'm happy with my Day one LE but more cars would be great. If you are a Season Pass holder you get one more car. One... I'm glad I did not bite this time.

Maybe I wait, it should not be too hard, unless the Hype and gameplay beats me like it did with my Day one Porsche DLC purchase.

Stoked about the Celica! I hope to GOD we can turn it into the 1000HP Pikes Peak beast that it is famous for. Plus it is nice to see the Lancia 037 (not 027 IGN) back!

That trailer got me hyped but I am a little disappointed by the lack of new cars. How could they not add the Audi S1 or Monster's Suzuki? Bah!
Yeah. Five new cars is a bit stingy. I think 10 would have been fair.

They didn't really make it clear about new areas. Some of that video looked very familiar. Have to admit the trailer got me hyped, but I'm going to wait and see on this one.

Trailer for the Rally expansion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0OT2lVjIhM

Looks good enough that I will buy it!

Fuck me that looks good. Why is it $20 though? That's more than I spent on the entire game lol, and with the upcoming Xbox sale I'm going to be blowing all my space bucks on games that are actually going to be reduced in price.

Honestly the thing that most excites me about this DLC is the possibility of new music, since that track in the trailer was all-new.

Some of those areas in the trailer looked like they took spots from the original city and just changed the pavement.

Edit: ^^ Loved that in RSC2. Loved it.

So even if I buy the pack, I don't get the Focus SVT unless I have the season pass?

Bit rough.

And the lack of cars is quite disappointing, too. Considering we're paying what's essentially the cost of a new mid-tier driving game (hell, I only paid ~$30AU for WRC3 when it came out) you'd think there'd be more than barely a handful of cars (that have already been modeled, mind you), a few tracks (that are already in the game) and an announcer... it's a sudden jolt to pre-launch with the bombshell that was the cost of the season pass.

I know I'm over-dramatizing it a little, but you can't help but think... is there really $20 worth of content in that DLC? Think I'll wait for it to inevitably go on sale.

Will it work as a long rally championship (points or time based) or f*ckin' single rally races spread through the map? If its just more separate races, I'll pass. If it's a long points based championship, it's day one for me.

Hey Shortt Sirket. Thanks for the invite to the car club. I was able to run a few races last night it and was fun trying out all those GAF cars. Also pretty cool having you guys show up in rivals after completing a race.

Looking forward to playing with some of you guys online. GT = studknckl

As much as I love Horizon, I am starting to really feel like it is a missed opportunity. There are so many things they could have done to make this game even bigger and better. I am guessing it is mainly because it was the first game and they want to test the waters and such, so I am holding out hope that they will really take chances with FH2.

Yeah, I think that is the biggest problem with this game to me. It just feels to "safe."

I don't know if this is because this is my first Forza game (and my first racing sim since GT3), but I thought it was extremely well done and has a very large scope. What are the "missed opportunities" that you are referring to?

i think you can consider making this game at all a huge risk though.

I am so bad at this game, I can't make progress. I am not even mad if you make fun of me... I am just angry and frustrated... because wtf is up with me.

The lack of:

* more rally focused cars (Audi S1, Pikes Peak cars, etc)
* real mountains with huge elevation changes and Hill Climbs
* snow, puddles, mud, more types of terrain
* varied events and long-form style events
* roads (it is good but could be so much better)
* cars in general
* things to "do" in the world
* traffic in MP

I think it is a GREAT game and T10/Playground should be incredibly proud of what they have done. I just feel this outing was a tad too safe, however I completely understand why it was. Hell, maybe this is just me being overly critical but I can't help but feel there could be "more" to Horizon.

Oh, I agree completely and it is why I am not really upset. Just sort of disappointed. The game is fantastic and I am BEYOND happy that it finally got made. I have wanted a legit racing game that lets you take the cars to the streets and Horizon hits that need damn near perfectly.

I am so bad at this game, I can't make progress. I am not even mad if you make fun of me... I am just angry and frustrated... because wtf is up with me.

I am not going to make fun of you but I will be honest that I really don't understand your issue. I play on Hard/Normal and I am honestly not THAT great but I have never thought this game was really difficult. It has some parts that can be quite competitive, but you say you play on easy and with aids so I have no idea how to help you. Have you tried to do a 1 on 1 with someone on here to get some tips and such? Sort of follow them around the different courses and have them show you how they do it and you can try to replicate it maybe? I might be free early next week to help if you want it man as I feel really bad for you. This game is amazing and I don't want you to quit it because you are getting frustrated.

The day that they do a mix of the best from Dirt 2, GT5, Forza 4, PGR and Horizon I will be so happy.

In fact I would love to get a cheap copy of Dirt2 (heck, even Dirt3 or WRC2 or 3) or Forza 3 to get my car fix, I have been playing Forza 2 (there are Porsches in it!) which means I'm very late but it sure is nice, I just wanted at least a more recent game because this lack of racing is getting hard to deal with it!

It's all on me, I am not blaming the game, Horizon is amazing but I am pushing myself to play it and I mostly quit after an hour because it all wents bad. For example I just tried to do a skill event for like 20 times. 20.000 points to get, the highest I managed was like 7.000 until I gave up because I either crash into traffic or I am not getting traffic at all so I can keep the multiplier up with near misses. I gave up on the destroy parts as I usually crash into the street borders and lose them.

I complain too much I guess, I should just roll with it with what I can accomplish, but then I was never bad at the Forza games and was quite good at PGR 3+4. No idea.

I have found that taking the right line with a mix of drift and controlling accelerator is key.

You have got to feather the gas and brake and if you use gears (I would) you can downshift for extra help in deceleration. if you try to speed your way through you will just bounce off walls. Also use rewind and when you clip a wall just tap rewind back two spots and try it until you get it. Over time you won't need rewind anymore. also upgrade cars with at least sport tires and brakes in most cases for better stability.

be a little aggressive with the other cars especially around corners, use draft and then shotgun past the car in front. don't get caught up in being blocked. Learn the line and execute it. also have found switching to hood casm is easiset so if I'm having a hard time I switch to that but usually use cockpit for racing.

Edit: oh on skill events? oh holy hell. yes those can be hard.. got to just keep trying (I switch from cockpit to 3rd person) and use drifts, e-drifts and speed passes and weaving traffic and wreckage until I get a lucky run. :)

The trailer looks good but i´ll wait for the users review because 5 cars is too little and the rumors said its the same routes with a different surface, so to me its too much reuse of the assets to charge 20 usd for it.

Don't be so hard on yourself. I play with rewind off, driving line off and most assists off and still have a hard time on stunt events even though regular AI races are usually a breeze. There was one with a Koenigsegg or some other obscure supercar where you have to hit ~240MPH that took me 30 min - 1 hour because the random traffic kept sabotaging me. Same thing with the skill/kudos stunts where there's too much or not enough traffic.

Monday comes the Title Update, here some info from the WIR:

First up, Monday. That’s the day that we’re releasing the latest title update for Forza Horizon, one that has been in the works since the game was launched back in October. This title update will address a number of issues in Forza Horizon, most notably the loyalty car import issue, which resulted in some players not receiving the Forza Motorsport loyalty rewards cars (for having played Forza Motorsport 3 or Forza Motorsport 4) in Forza Horizon.

Also as part of the title update, rumble functionality in Forza Horizon has also been updated to take into account different rumble thresholds for wired and wireless controllers. In addition, Forza Horizon will now feature increased rumble effects at peak tire friction on paved roads as well as more pronounced off-road vibration effects. The vibration slider (which you can find by going to the Profile -> Options -> Controls -> Advanced menu) is now more tunable than before, giving players greater ability to dial the precise level of rumble they are looking for.

Finally, this title update will also address the lack of smoke effects when going from bumper or hood cam into photo mode, a bug that caused grid ordering based on last race results to not work, and a number of other improvements as well. The title update will be available on Monday, Dec. 17 and will download automatically (assuming your Xbox 360 is connected to the Xbox LIVE) when you fire up the game.

yes, i have read that, i think Badned said something about the routes being the same but with different surface for rally events. Its very disappointing if is true.
Some people with good eyes are saying they saw some of this routes in the trailer, like the tree tunnel.
Oh, well, it will be hard to convince me.

WRC 3 for me, then.

Hallelujah! With that title update coming out, I won't need to get the rally DLC!

That's... that's not good. I can't wait for the day when Forza DLC isn't something that's just been slightly modified and uses existing assets, or overpriced.

Oh, well, it will be hard to convince me.

WRC 3 for me, then.
PC or console? I still haven't fired it up yet, despite installing it on PC about a month ago :(

PC.

Played the demo and found it pretty decent. :)

EDIT: I mean, it's not even close to Richard Burns Rally, but it seems good enough to be fun for a rally fan like me.

I gave up on the skills events.
Me too. I beat a couple of them but others seem impossible, at least for my skill level.

I will too ;)
Now to get better at races. Friends said Horizon has rubberband AI - I told them that can't be because the leader is always half the course ahead of me, lol.
What difficulty are you playing on? I played most of the game with the opponent AI set to easy, there's no shame in it.

Yeah, I'm feeling much the same. It looks like good fun, but I'll wait and see what you guys make of the rally pack before I decide to go for it or not.

Glad to see some things, (rumble especially), addressed in the title update, too.

I dunno. I've had a lot of fun with the game but $20 for 5 cars and some new racing surfaces sounds steep. Definitely going to wait for some impressions before buying this. I'm glad I restrained myself from buying the season pass.

Also - your grid order is supposed to be based on your last race? In single player? Shit, that would be nice. I get started in last every time (and win every race). Sometimes with the shorter races there's just not a lot of time to push your way to first.

I checked out the rivals yesterday, the 'ready for rally' one, and whats with all the top times being obviously glitched? With rewind and no certification, things are bad enough, but it seems broken on every level...
