Forza Motorsport 4 - The Floodgates Have Opened...

Thanks, I use TrackIR for my PC and love it but it will be interesting to see how responsive it will be for forza4.

It should be good, considering it tracks your upper body and not just your head. It should detect a wide variety of movements.

yeah, i like that it will track head leaning or turning - so it should feel as natural as possible for a larger number of people. hopefully i can simulate shift's awesome cameras by bouncing all around while racing :p

The supplementary content being an alternate way to use Autovista, hyperlinking and head tracking. All not essentials.

Gold/online achievements are a bunch of bullshit too, but I've complained enough about those in the past, there's no avoiding those since they became a mainstay long ago. This can be avoided now, but even still it's likely it won't be.

Hey Enzo, have you ever used headtracking in any of the PC driving sims? There are quite a few titles that support the system and if you have access to TrackIR and a decent wheel/pedals setup the experience is really immersive.

Here is a short video of F1 2010 but there are plenty of examples available -

Such a good feeling being able to look into corners naturally and it becomes second nature in no time. The head movements aren't sweeping glances either and can be calibrated to taste.

Good news about Maple Valley. It's an oldie but definitely a goodie.
Be nice if they gave it a snowy makeover as alternative "weather", but it's highly unlikely.
Still find it odd that they call temperature "weather" in the menu screens. I wonder if there is a reason for this, or if it's just poor use of English..?

i doubt it even has alternate time of day. Who knows, though.
Speaking of alternate time of the day, the B-roll Hockenheim footage shows shadows from scenery don't change at dusk; maybe they just still have to prebake them again in all light conditions. You don't really notice there, but in a track like Maple Valley, with trees around and so close to the track, having shadows stretch further on the road would make a difference.

I think I'll be a leaner™.

I'm curious to see how much freedom kinect headtracking will allow; I wonder if moving your head up/down will result in seeing more cockpit/road.

Malle valley was one of my favorite tracks in the previous games, I like tracks in forests In general such as Deep Forest in GT.
October is gonna be a busy month with this and BF3 :)

I don't follow, Of course head-tracking and hyperlinking and an alternate control of Autovista are kinect only..

It has the hardware (video and audio) to relieve a lot of processing from the console, and MS has optimised the software to make it more reliable then any previous voice/video control stuff that's been around, so I can't see any alternative to it really..

But end of the day, Hyperlinking / Headtracking etc are not content, they are just augmentations that require hardware of one sort or another to implement (and implement properly)

It's technically an augmentation but head tracking could be a major part of the racing experience, you can think of it as added content because of it's possibly major impact on the immersion.

If it's as good as it has seemed then it'll add a lot to the racing, specially for triple monitor setups. Has this even been done before with this level of accuracy and natural flow?

My sealed up Kinect is definitely ready.

Not bad but my complaints are more in regards to the driving and racing itself. Car clubs are all good but the racing experience is what matters most to me.

Still waiting for someone to do a gif of Dan Greenawalt cutting down Kaz from the Holy Grail:

So I do appreciate headtracking that will be ace. My setup might not allow for it I'll have to check.

The Shift does headtracking with Track IR work in low light environments? I play in the dark.

I am glad that Maple Valley is back. I like having more fantasy tracks versus real life ones since visually they can do alot more with them. However, I was disapointed because the way they talked about "an old favorite is back". To me and many others that implied, in particular "is back" makes it sound like some that was gone for a while...well MV has been in every Forza so where is "back" from?

Anyways, glad it is going to be in F4, but I agree with another poster. Why couldnt they have at least made another ribbon out of the enviroment? Or even make the long version lets say longer or something? It is such a nice enviroment that they could have easily made at least 2 more ribbons, which would give us 2 more in reverse.

I am still holding out hope that some long forgotten F1 tracks will be in the game..Alpine, Rio, Blue Mountain, Tokyo...my preference in order of importance:

1. Rio - We dont have enough city tracks
2. Blue Mountain - Just a great track
3. Alpine - Another lovely track
4. Tokyo - Night racing anyone?

Give up the hope, seriously. You'll be less disappointed in the end.

Just got back from playing the game at PAX Prime, and I have to say that I am truly impressed with Forza 4. I feel like the difference between Forza 4 and 3 is substantial. The new handling physics are solid and requires more work and effort on the controls than Forza 3. (I played with the pad) Also the graphics seems very bright and off, but I blame the TVs they were using, it seemed like the brightness and sharpness was turned all the way up. The lighting system seemed fantastic and alot better than Forza 3. The track was the Alps track that has been shown everywhere, and I drove the 599 GTO and Subaru Impreza. I was very impressed with the track, its a very fun and exciting track.

Loved the demo and it just reinforces my day 1 purchase.

Unfortunately I have not, but I am indeed sure it provides as immersive of an experience as it's billed as having.

What I'm trying to say is that, all the Kinect-based features are extras. They augment the experience and provide options rather than actually being something large enough to be considered a core element of the game. And I feel that only core elements should have rewards, such as achievements tied to them; career mode, multiplayer (not restricted to online), racing feats, car ownership, alternate modes (like Autovista). I feel like I shouldn't have to buy a $150 peripheral or even a $60 sub to have all the achievements attainable in a $60 game. This was a philosophy behind achievements described back in 2005 that has been somehow lost. I blame GRAW for getting the wheel turning early on, which still has the shittiest achievement of all time.

I am. I played demo the first day, are you going to be there on Sunday?

As usual MS never have any swag at their booth, last year I came home with bunch of stuff all from Sony and other publisher 1/10th if not smaller than MS.

Demo was good, love the new improve cockpit view, new button lay our was a little confusing.

Please explain...
Is there no custom button mapping?

How do you do these things and how much patience do you guys have?
I just whack on a manufacturer decal and call it a day...

Six weeks to go, more than six tracks to be 'officiallly' revealed. Can we expect several track features a week from now on?

The pacing of the release of information seems to be a little... off.
(assuming, of course, that they are fully intending to tell us about all the cars, tracks and features prior to the release date)

Never has been and it is annoying.

When using a P911TS I always in inadvertently rewind when racing as I shuffle steer. In other racers I can map the buttons so the select and start buttons are turned off so I don't have that issue.

With all the new wheels coming out that will support FM4 having different configurations it would make sense to implement custom button mapping.

Don't take my Forza 3.2 comment to heart. Still stand by it but its coming from a perspective that values other things beyond Top Gear and Autovista which don't matter to me that much.

They put a lot of work into those things. Sure.

The reason why I feel disappointed is that there are some things they could have done that could have taken minimal effort and could have changed the game a lot for the better.

Qualifying for events or online racing would be easy to implement. It is basically a Time Trial with 2 laps. Record the time and compare it to the competition. All the code and what have you is already in the game they aren't reinventing anything here. Make it so people can skip it if they want and start them in last place or by car ranking. For those that do it give them a credits bonus for even trying. Qualifying can help drivers get used to the track with the particular car they are driving...but T10 can make this a fun feature.

False start option for online play. Maybe this is just me so I won't get into it. Still should be obvious that its easy to put in the game.

Autocross editor would add so much to the game. Have the person start out in the big parking lot in the Benchmark track or Top Gear TT and have him drive a car around. A track will be generated along the path this person drives with cone gates. You might not have cone slaloms but hey its a start. This will take some programming work but can you imagine all the cool tracks you could find on the storefronts? The programming effort would pay off it would add so much to the game. Another way to do it is to use the same sort of thing like the livery editor to place down cone gates to make a track. A lot of real life autocross tracks are designed this way anyway from a top down view.

Rally might be a lot to ask for but all they need to do is to tweak and perfect just one type of gravel surface and use that. Ever drive on the grass in Forza? Its not quite gravel but it makes you wonder with a little tweaking they could get it right. Model one set of rally hard compound tires made for gravel. Don't need tires for mud or wet. May take some work but it opens up a another world in the game.

You don't have to tell me I'm crazy for hoping for these things in the Forza series I know that already. Question is...am I crazy in thinking that these things are doable?

Do we know there's no qualifying at all in 4? Maybe they've left it open enough for it to be patched in either client or server side.

indianapolis and infineon should get a making of too.
6 cars a day 5 days a week for 6 weeks means 180 cars, 30 new ones. Sounds about right, but i think they will alter the pace at some point.
They certainly have to in regards to tracks at least.

As for new features, as the time before release thins the chances of seeing some big announcement are getting slimmer, although Mr. B. said this year's TGS will be the best TGS in Forza's history, at least on par with 2004's.
I don't remember what was announced at TGS 2004 for Forza 1, but the one prior to fm3 release wasn't bad at all.

have you guys taken a look at recent forza 4 videos on youtube ?
The first 2 or 3 pages are basically only reposts of that wathog autovista video.
The game probably gained more popularity with that, than with the making of videos.
Sad but true.

That is why it was announced now. Why you think they made a point of saying it's the Halo 4 warthog?

How many Halo fans will now buy the game hoping to find out some little detail about Halo 4?

I played it yesterday and it reminded me of FM3. The WRX had too much grip but the 599 felt far more realistic. The graphics were good but the new lighting effects were inconsistent at times.

Overall I think most fans will be really pleased.

You know, with all these casual orientated videos, presentations, information..etc, I would love to see at least ONE core video showcasing the finer points, the more technical points of the game. I understand the need to create awareness for the wider audience and actually support it, but one measley video geared towards the nerdier guys wouldn't hurt right?

Just sit down and get nerdy. Tell us about the tire model, perhaps compare it with the previous model, tell us about the audio in the game and how it was achieved, tell us about how different upgrades and tuning parameters hamper or improve the performance of a vehicle, tell us about the upgraded suspension model..etc

Another thing I would like to see in the game is a far better 'tutorial' on the upgrades and tuning aspects.
I don't remember what game it was but there was these videos that went along with every upgrade you made to the car. Let's say you changed the suspension, a video would pop up actually showing you the differences you've just made. Same thing with the brakes..etc.

The greater public would know little about bumpstops, coilovers, caliper sizes, diffusers, engine management systems..etc so they really need a better explanation of the art with actual visual cues rather than just some scrolling of words...

I actually find the information on tuning quite helpful. But it is quite sterile and I doubt the average person is willing to read what it says or to then test out the changed settings, until the car performs to their liking.

I'm not saying that the written explanations are useless or anything, but as you pointed out, people would rather see what's happening rather than read a description.
Actually seeing toe in being applied for example would be understood much more easily than reading about it.
You know that age old saying, 'a picture is worth a thousand words'?
Well, imagine what a video would tell..

from what i've seen things work a lot better(read: look more realistic) on racetracks as was the case with fm3. Also, the Alps track looks good, but i think Camino looked better. I'm just not a fan of snowy environments i guess.
Curious to see what Nordschleife looks like (expecting sunny weather and blue sky this time)
