If your wife is 9 months pregnant, and you go to a movie without telling your family or friends or WIFE where you are going so they can call the theatre, that's you're irresponsibility. Amazingly, a lot of people go through their lives quite effectively without having a phone with them every second of the day. If you're worried about your hypothetical wife, leave the theatre partway through the movie and call to check on her. Inconvenience yourself, not the people sitting next to you in the theatre.

As someone with one on the way let me just say that the delivery window for a baby is rather large... like about a month in size around the estimated delivery date.

Uhh...to the dorks who quoted me numerous times:

1st off -- Border: Emergency calls refers to 911. And you crack on my reading comprehension? Right...no. Border proves he's a dork, once again. Jammers kill your signal and the only calls it'll let through are to emergency services.

2nd: I pick up my phone calls in the theater (phone is always on vibrate in theaters), duck and whisper. Nobody can hear me over a 500 watt sound system. If it's not urgent, I just quickly say "I'll call you back I'm at the theater" and hang up.

WOOHOO ME QUOTE SELF.

A modification to the idea; instead all the movie goers paying for the system, it can be charged to the cell phone receiving the call for a nominal fee, to be charged upon accepting the incoming message. IF you can't bear to be without contact, or are a VIP or medical personnel required to have a cell phone but want to hit the movies, the rest of us shouldn't have to pay. And if it is a TRUE EMERGENCY, a small fee shouldn't be that much of a problem given the condition of the call.

Well, all the PROS have been put in this post and the linked post, so I guess I need a con point to keep it all fair and balanced and shit.

CON -

People will know where you are when they call you, so if you played hooky from work and your boss calls you, he'll probably be a bit upset that you're watching "The Incredibles" instead of selling the crap merchandise based on the movie at Wal-Mart.

More pros and cons as they come to mind...

Hey, I'm all for phone manufacturers collaborating with manufacturers of such devices so that when you enter certain areas, the phone automatically switches to a silent profile. But that's not going to happen.

Love the hypotheticals as well. To the "What if there's an emergency?!" crowd - well OK, here's another hypothetical for you, what if when you get into the cinema you find that you don't get a signal there? Would you leave*? What if you miss the call? I don't know, maybe you leave the phone in your pocket and you put your coat over the seat in front of you so you don't feel it vibrate. All I'm getting at is that not only did we get by before we were contactable 24/7, there are times - yes, even today - when we are still uncontactable.

*I imagine the "wife expecting a baby" crowd may actually do this.
