You got unlucky

HDDs are dirt cheap so shouldn't cost much to replace it but I know that's not the point and doesn't make up for the inconvenience.

I had an external HDD that shit itself too. I did manage to back most of it up but lost some files hopefully you can get everything saved!

Also, remember the 3-2-1 rule! 3 back ups across 2 media types and 1 offsite,

My back up solution is:

1x 2TB SSD installed in my PC
1x 2TB HDD external drive (manually synced with SSD every month)
1x 1TB cloud storage (automatically syncs with SSD)

The drive is primarlly a gaming drive, but I have some classic old games on there. So far, backing it up is going fine. I got a new drive coming in tomorrow.

I only noticed my HDD was failing because it wouldn't delete/copy certain files. Those were the files I couldn't save but everything else I got backed up. I knew it was no longer reliable so replaced it.
