Bought an Occulust Quest 3s two days ago, pretty much on a stoned whim. Decided to purchase one at like 4am, got it delivered by 11. Had to do a lot of setting up first (downloading 180vr videos from yt, serving these via smb, playing them locally, sideloading, virtual desktop...), so I mostly did that, instead of just using it. This thing needs a lot of figuring out, but the pay off is worth it easily.

Last night I finally finished up most of it, so now I can actually get a feeling for what it's like to end and start a day with just using it. It's fucking glorious. I'll probably daily drive this now, instead of my projector/regular display.

Watching this in VR is... it's something else.

I kinda wanna emphasize how great it is to be able to fully lie on your back, totally straigthened out. Head totally straight staring up at the ceiling. I don't think I've lied consciously like this for more than 10 minutes in.... ever. Finally I can make use of the ridiculously huge bed I got.

Apparently the Occulus 3 has substantially better lenses, for like 200 bucks more. The lenses on this thing aren't great, so maybe I'll actually return the 3s and get the 3 instead. I do prefer how pass through is handled on the 3s though, and while the image is by no means top notch, it's certainly good enough for me, so maybe I'll just stick to that until there's a Quest 4.

This is seriously kind of a game changer. I realize not anyone would want to put up with all the obvious downsides of sitting in vr for hours straight, but this is some matrix/minority report level kind of black magick wizardry.
Luckily my brain handles it just fine, I've never even tried VR before buying this. Haven't spend much/any time playing any games yet though. There's a Batman included, Aszgard's Wrath (which is supposeldy pretty good) and I got Resi 4 VR, so I'll try these later. Maybe the motion sickness will get to me there, but for videos/flat surfaces (like shitposting on neogaf) I can spend 6hrs+ in this no issues.

Now I'll smoke another bowl, finish up my kebap and then continue with Metaphor, in vr. There's worse ways to spend a weekend. cheers.

i was thinking about getting a Meta headset. I had an Occulus Rift S whenever those were out. It was heavy, clunky, and felt like looking through toilet roll tubes due to the shitty fov. i knew there were rumours of the 3S but yeah it has lower quality lenses and display. i've never used either device so can't compare them.

i'd probably play some games on it but would mostly use it for watching YouTube and movies on a "big screen". maybe casting my PC screen to it or something

at this point i'll probably just wait for the Meta Quest 4.

If you went through all of the hoops to get a setup you like then I would highly HIGHLY recommend you get the Quest 3 and return the 3s. I am not shitting on the 3s, our clients love it and many of them have started replacing their quest 2's with this model but for a wide range of use cases (games, video, social, etc) I would recommend the 3 over the 3s easily. The lenses, battery and storage alone make up for the cost difference imo, then you are also getting a resolution bump as well.

Battery and storage aren't of concern to me, luckily I guess. I don't really plan to store anything on it, I serve most of it via pc/cloud. And I'm guessing the difference in battery will be marginable, I'm supposed to get like 90 minutes out of this. Even if the quest 3 would double that, the battery would still be pretty useless :D

The lenses though, yes. Better lenses "alone" would be absolutely worth the 200 bucks. I'm just not sure "how much" better they actually are, and I do like the quest 3s overall.

I'd honestly care much more for better passthrough, these are eye toy tier cameras. That'd be another leap for me personally. Hopefully we'll see development on that in Quest4.

But yeah, if money would be of no concern, then I'd probably follow your advice.

Pass through is marginally better due to the lenses and resolution bump but it is not night and day between the 3s and the 3.

I personally like the slightly larger FOV and I think the headset is better balanced. You sound like you are already on the path though, enjoy!

No one shall be brought before our LORD David Bowie without the true and secret knowledge of the Photoshop. For in that time, so shall He appear.
I appreciate this sentiment but I always found those movies boring. I slept through all three of those movies 👀
Omg I found the one other person who finds those movies boring! I’ve always liked you, cunt 💙

Even in theaters, I’ve only ever made it through one movie (including the hobbit movies) without falling asleep.

And I’ve watched 2001 about a dozen times and it’s one of my favorite movies, so I know it’s not a me problem.
