Insane For Sony
PS4 OS entirely written in HTML/JavaScript, made by the same team that created the new PSN store.
Jeff Rigby redeemed yet again.
Jeff Rigby redeemed yet again.
This doesn't make any sense to me.
Originally the PS4 was destined to have 4GB GDDR5 RAM.
On the last minute, Cerny surprises everyone and we're blessed with 8GB. And now news has come to surface that 3.5GB is reserved for the OS.
How does something like this happen so quickly?
Is GAF overreacting again?

Eurogamer and DF have been wrong lately about various tech aspects.
Gafs reaction.
Xbox one requires 3 gigs "ooooo wtf why" "lol get stuck with inferior graphics"
ps4 requires 3 gigs " 5 gigs is more than enough" " 5 gigs should be enough early on"
Welp, the PS4 was doomed from the start and finally there is irrefutable proof of that. 5.5GB GDDR5 is some weaksauce baby shit, and that's down from 8GB which isn't great in the first place. There's absolutely no way they can recover from this bombshell. Stick a fork in it fellas, it's done.
Might I suggest switching your pre-orders to the Xbox One? The sweet, sexy Microsoft exclusive cloud will provide all the magical internet RAM your little heart desires.
Why? It's the truth. Anyone who has even worked in the CE industry knows it.
Manufacturers invent, Consumer Electronics companies rebrand and take credit. That's how it works.
So in the end they both have the same amount? Fucking hilarious if true. All the dick waving some did over more ram availability next to the X1's lol

If someone from the Sony camp said that then they are foolish. If someone thinks that there using that as a bullet point on a list is good then I scoff at it. Good things 7GB was never official so some are immediately discredited on that front.
If this Is true I'm buying 50 ps4's for gaffers.
4K isn't a big priority for them since it's only for movies and photos, and I really doubt it has to do something with this. Even if they enable that functionality, it probably won't be reliant on massive amount of RAM.Serious question: Could this have something to do with the OS and its apps needed to run at 4K Native Res at a later date?
0.5GB out of 4GB = 12.5% usageIt's not. Removing 4 GB would leave at most 3.5 for games. Also, this would certainly change with time, just like the PS3.
this thread should be an interesting read what with all the apologies from posters ridiculing MS for their "bloated" 3 gigs of use.

Please post a link where Sony states 1GB is reserved for the OS.
The news that the PS4's OS reservation is in the same ballpark as Xbox One's equivalent 3GB allocation is sure to surprise many, especially bearing in mind that previously leaked Sony docs have only spoken of a 512MB allocation for the system software - though this information hails from the era where the new PlayStation was slated to ship with only 4GB of memory.

If Digital Foundry is wrong again, that makes three things where they failed their readers in one month. That's pretty shoddy for place that is talking about one of the few things in gaming that are objective: tech analysis.
If they want similar functionality they need similar quantities. Do you disagree?
Lol

okay, some people need to be adressing specific people. Not Gaf as a whole.Wow the neogaf kiddies love to throw their toys out of the pram don't they?
To those upset by this, what exactly do you think is happening here? Do you think Sony is planning to steal the RAM to beef up their execs personal PCs via the cloud? Because it is obvious that you do not believe this will make the PS4 better in anyway, so why do you think Sony did it?
There are some simple truths here that people are forgetting:
4.5GB of RAM is still HUGE for a console. Take a look at games like The Last of Us on PS3 to see what can be done with a small fraction of a GB.
Multitasking takes RAM. If you want stuff actually happening in the background then programs need to be running that take RAM. There is no way around it.
And the biggest point that everyone seems to miss is that once you let a single game use X amount of RAM then the OS can never have that RAM back. But like we saw this generation with the PS3, Sony can give it back from the OS. I am sure they will launch with a buffer to keep their options open, see what works, what gamers want (because such a large amount of RAM allows this luxury), then decide what they can axe/add optimise and eventually either reduce the OS footprint or add amazing things.. Games will still look amazing with 5GB, except now they look amazing whilst not limiting future OS options.
It is the smart thing to do. Not that you would know it from the reaction.
I don't know about fanboystic meltdowns but if 3.5 GBs reserved for OS turn out to be true it will affect the decisions of a number of people (and have them possibly moving to PC gaming). Noone wants an AppStation.
Another edited version:
Wow the blowup from this thread is going to be glorious if this information turns out to be false
Jusr realized that this is just as bad as removing 4 GB from the system.
So this guy is real?

I am not expecting to see a tremendous difference in exclusives. PS4 will still have the edge, but I don't think it will be mind blowing.
So would you agree that people who assumed, with confidence, that the PS4 only used about a gigabyte of RAM for OS and had the remainder for games is discredited? I find that very interesting.
Playing it safe? Reserving that much space for the OS is far past that point, I think.
I just want to laugh at those who laughed at MSFT. Just like the one's who laugh here. No sense in having a double standard as I don't think the 3GB Xbone OS is bad like I don't think this rumor is bad.
