Having directed one of the best films of pre-reboot era "Star Trek" with "Star Trek: First Contact," filmmaker and former "Star Trek: The Next Generation" actor Jonathan Frakes has indicated he's keen on sitting in the director's chair on the third film in the rebooted franchise.

In the wake of Roberto Orci's departure from the big chair, Frakes appeared in a radio interview with Komo News this week and said he contacted Paramount to express his interest and is waiting on their response:

"I'm all over it. I would love that job. I'm trying to keep the lid on how excited I am about the possibility, knowing it's such a long shot. But there's nothing I would like better."

Frakes certainly has experience with the franchise, having also helmed "Star Trek: Insurrection" and numerous episodes of the spin-off shows including 'Next Generation,' 'Voyager,' and 'Deep Space Nine'.

Didn't mind Frakes directing in First Contact, though Insurrection was awful. That said, there's no chance in hell he's getting the gig.

If they're still going to do the rumored time travel script it probably doesn't matter who directs it.

What's Rick Berman's involvement with Star Trek these days? On IMDB seems like his last roll was producer for the horrible Enterprise. Why the thread title?

Well I mean in the context that they'll say First Contact is one of the best but ignore that he also directed one of the worst ones, too.

No, I mean its in the last line of the article.

It's a RedLetterMedia reference as far as I'm aware, don't think it really has much to do with the content of the OP than a loose connection to Star Trek, but I might be wrong.

First Contact was a one hit wonder. Every other TNG movie sucked horribly. I wouldn't trust Frakes in the directors chair, especially since this isn't a TNG movie.

Everything after TNG was pretty terrible except the 4th season of Enterprise. '09 was pretty good, but STID annoyed me terribly, especially the white washing of Khan.

I have no positive expectations for 13.

Well, Rick Berman was responsible for the destruction of Star Trek as we all knew it. One bad decision after another. Hes the reason we don't have Picard being badass and solving moral quandries on the big screen. Thankfully, he gave DS9 to some other guys to run while he fucked up Voyager.

I worded my initial post pretty poorly, so the confusion is my bad. They factually mentioned he directed it in the article, yes, but I just meant that it's funny they'll give him credit for one of the better movies but ignore that he's also responsible for one of the most terrible ones as well.

Just looking at his bio and he has a lengthy resume of both acting and directing experience beyond Star Trek. Many think First Contact is the best Star Trek stuff ever. Sure, not everything he's done is gold, be he's certainly qualified.

I haven't been blown away by any of this new Star Trek, so I don't think Frakes could make it any worse.

Because any excuse to tell Berman to fuck off.

Insurrection's problem was the script more so than the direction IIRC

The fuck? First contact was easily the worst one. It was dumb as hell, it ruined the borg as an adversary and it turn Star Trek from fun science fiction adventures into shitty action schlock.

I dont think anyone would dispute the TNG films were abysmal failures and a betrayal of everything fans liked about the show. But FC was the best one. It may be the shiniest turd in the box but its still a turd.

It's the only one where Worf got to be awesome, too.

Otherwise he was just getting pimples and shit.
