GAF, do you even like video games?

Be honest, do you even like gaming anymore?

  • Of course!

  • I do, but wish I had more time to play

  • Eh, I come in and out of the hobby

  • I liked games made before 10-15 years ago

  • I only really like a specific genre/game/series

  • I’m just here to troll

  • Does mobile count?

I've been reading GAF for 15 years. It seems like over the last few years sentiment here has become increasingly negative about all corners of the industry, from devs/publishers themselves to journalists, content creators, and other gaming communities.

Do we even like video games anymore, just yearn for a bygone era, or has complaining/trolling become your main engagement in the hobby?

Is celebrating the failure of a game you don't like more important than the success of one you do?

Not much new releases, still some gems out there but AAA is mostly uninspired tripe. So I just keep playing my old favourites and picking up the odd gem off of steam

I like videogames. Good videogames. Which is why I complain about broken releases, censorship, MTX, poor optimziation, shitty gaas games...

Nowadays there's a lot to complain about when it comes to videogames, but I think me and many others do it from a position of worry and care, not hate.

If you've been around for fifteen years then you should know that being a miserable moaning cunt is par for a course on videogame forums.

I can't even play them all. Its a gaming golden age right now. I complain at times but also very regularly talk about things I'm into and things I'm playing.

I like video games. I like them a lot.

I will complain about some games, maybe many games.

You can like many games, and I complain about others.

Just like everything else in life.

Complaining and criticism isn't new for sure, it just feels quite a bit worse than before. There was a new thread every day for like a week shitting on sales for AC Shadows.

We used to talk about gameplay and graphics. Now we argue over what's "woke", Steam CCU counts, and exuberate joy over a game's failure.

Been here for almost 20 years, been gaming for over 40 years, I'll stop gaming when I physically can't do it anymore. My whole family are gamers, currently watching my kids play Mario Kart World on Switch 2. Gaming is awesome!

People 24 hours posting in a forum you think they play? They're here to shit on everything and move on to the next

We still have to complain though with the fuckery thats been going on for quite some time now. Although we're in a golden age of gaming

Graphics are still discussed a lot as it's the weapon of choice for platform warriors.

I think its always been like this personally. The forum I dumped years ago, I did so because it was far to miserable.

I dunno I find GAF full of fun folks and theres plenty of enthusiasm around. Just follow GigaBowser GigaBowser if you want some positivity in your life.

Yes but only for good games and seems we're starting to get lots of it again since last year with more to come!

FFVII Rebirth
Stellar Blade
Space Marine 2
Wukong
Mario Kart
Next AAA Zelda
Wuchang
Atomic Heart 2
The muthafucking Cube game
ILL
Resident Evil 9
GTA VI
Darksiders 4
Witcher 4
Elder Scrolls VI
Half Life 3
Chronos
Routine

And a whole bunch of interesting upcoming indies like Deepest Fear, Phase Zero, Ground Zero etc.

Maybe I am in the minority here, but I don't find fanboyism to be an attractive quality in a GAFer.

While he's going for endearing, but can often come off as annoying, I never find him malicious. He's fine in my book even if he causes grammarly's algorithms to divide by zero.

I could handle 60 great games a year but show them to me, I'm in total control of the real world with real time and real numbers.

thank you my friends arm the spirit of gaming

Absolutely. I'm slowly tackling my backlog and picking the occasional extra up along the way so there's always something to play. If I don't like something I just don't buy it or don't play it.

People tend to be more negative speciallly since they are spending a fortune in their gaming stuff. Same could be said about any other media("do people hate movies???").
Also lets not kid ourselves and pretend this is not fault of quality of games and journalism pushing bullcrap.
Also I suggest you follow Pasta la Vista Pasta la Vista post and go for an OT if you are so bothered with criticism.

Love video games but the industry is so toxic. Ever week hulst, pitchfork, Yves, etc say something brain dead. They don't understand what gamers want anymore.

And heaven forbid you don't buy their broken trash at launch. Benzies sounds like a bitch complaining about conspiracy theories. Then there's a defense force on every forum or people just trolling.

Its gotten stupid and is full of horseshit just like politicians. Double talk is the name of the game. "Journalists" gaslight the public constantly and very few are objective. Bribes are rampant in the review process

None of these are videogames.

So, answering your question: I (we) like videogames, but I (we) don't like grifters and leeches sucking the blood out of this hobby.

For me SNES-PS1-PS2 is the absolute peak.
Everything before and after is worse.

Still, there are always great games to play.
I still game as much as ever at my 40s.

However I wonder if anyone else plays.
It feels people buy games to try for half an hour and add it to their endless backlog.

It's depressing that OTs are tiny compared to review or sales threads.
I remember gaf when I was teen, there was way more enthusiasm and love for the hobby.

Over the last 2 months I played one of the best metroidvanias I've played

Then I went on to play one of the best JRPGs I've played

And now I'm playing one of the most fun 3D platformes I've played since like Mario Galaxy

Gaming is great right now, fuck the haters.
The only people I constantly see complaining are those that literally only care about graphics and those that apprently can't enjoy games if they aren't made by a Sony first party studio.

I enjoy video games and there are always plenty of great games new and old to play. I avoid the discourse around video game news because it's usually negative social media engagement bait like anything else talked about online.

No.

I hate videogames.

I hate gamers even more.

I can't feel anything but hate and contempt.

My sole existence revolves around being miserable and trying to make other people miserable as well.

After all, misery loves company.

And this is why I'm still posting on NeoGAF.

The schadenfreude.... the mischievous smirk behind each troll post.

Reveling in my bitter joy of seeing all these declining series, studio closures, predatory practices, creative bankruptcy, cringy gaming events.

The videogame industry is going down... along with me.

If I was all in on only PS5 this gen I'd probably be bitter 24/7 too. At least they have all those sales threads I guess. PS used to have a lot more of a fun culture in the company including regular showcases. I think a lot of negativity trickles down from the top.

I like games that are actual games. Not these interactive movies that the whole point is to get to the next cutscene.

Some of that is just noise.... (see below)

I'm having fun this gen. I have been in gaming funks but a lot of it comes from work and life interrupting. I've actually been getting into more games this year than I have the last few. I am also an equal opportunity gamer so I will play games on anything. That means I am always "playing" something even if it is just checking in on my FARM.

I love games but I'm very picky nowadays. Lots of times I'll just bounce off a game and completely lose interest in under 30 minutes then never play it again, even if I can tell it's a really well made game.

Mostly I prefer games that give me some instant gratification and that are "easy to learn, hard to master". If there are like 20 tutorials for different gameplay mechanics within the first 5 minutes of the game, I'm probably gonna drop it.

Mostly I've been playing shmups and roguelites lately.

Also I play some RPGs. I don't mind some more in depth story-heavy games but the story better be REALLY fucking good and well-suited for a game (not just some Hollywood blockbuster wannabe). Clair Obscur for example.
