Silkk The Shocker- Charge it 2 Da Game
220px-ChargeIt2DaGame98.jpg

No Limit is in full effect in 1998, all eyes are on the army from different regions across the nation. It’s about time for Silkk The Shocker to drop his second album entitled “Charge It 2 Da Game”. As you are aware, Silkk is probably one of the worst rappers to come out of hip hop. He sounds like a wounded E-40 with Tourette syndrome. However, he meant well with his debut album “The Shocker” which received a 8.5. Will “Charge it 2 Da Game” strike gold again…or will it fizzle like stale cola? Well, it’s a mixed bag. The album starts off with the traditional posse cut from the No Limit army called “I’m a Soldier”. Other tracks on the album like “Give Me the World”, “Throw Yo Hood Up”, “Just Be Straight With Me (good track), and “If I Don’t Gotta”, gives the album some legs. Unfortunately, Charge it 2 Da Game falls short in other areas. The reality of this album is the fact that it’s supposed to be a commercial album and Silkk was supposed to be this baby face for the label. Imagine if Ice Cube did love tracks out of NWA, would you take it seriously? This is how I feel about the way this album was marketed. It’s supposed to be a gangsta rap album with some poppy elements. One minute Silkk is a soldier going to war, the next minute he’s following orders for the mafia.

Yes, it’s one of those themes that I hate/loved about mid/late 90s hip hop. Expect the album to have the corniest renditions of Italian voices, guitar licks, and other cringe worthy shit that made the trend look ultra-lame. The No Limit army is featured throughout the album and holy shit….Master P went full 2pac on the album. This will be the running joke throughout 1998, as Master P tries his hardest to imitate 2pac to the point its rather pathetic. Also, Destiny’s Child makes an appearance on the album which is the saving grace next to a Mac feature. I swear dude was probably the closest thing to Nas that No Limit had at the time…he is so good on the mic.

Bottom line, Charge it 2 Da Game is not a bad album by any means. It’s good, but average to the point where skipping some tracks is truly the name of the game.

Overall Score- 7.0

You mean Kanye doesn't fux with people who aren't talented and are stunted beat makers instead of actual producers? Props to Kanye. If I was jacking shit I'd surround myself with impressive people, too.

Ye has said his ambition apart from music was to develop video games. I wouldn't be surprised if he executive produced the soundtrack of and/or did a few new tracks for some cinematic big budget video game. Surprised Rockstar hasn't drawn it out of him.

This dude is really about to put out a second album next week. The first one is good enough, but I'll gladly take some more Face, Nas and Quik.

I remember reading he was studying game development, then realized the aspect he was most passionate about was the sound production, and went for that

Thought the first disc was pretty average, looking forward to the second disc way more, guest list is on point.

So I re-bought Digitable Planets' Blowout Combout cause someone "borrowed" the disc from me when I was like 15 and never gave it back.

I remember being quite fond of it it back then but I honestly didn't remember it being that amazing. What a great record, not even one bad song.

Also bought Skizzy Mars' EP and Gift of Gab's "Escape 2 Mars" but haven't had a chance to listen to them yet.

I remember when some dude in high school wouldn't give me back my DJ Clue Star Wars mixtape :(. It had every rap diss on it from that time period.

I'll take the L, fuck it. That Hopsin song is a perfect parody. Wow.

The intro to that song still reeks of cornball though and throws the whole thing off. He has no self awareness. Completely takes the fun out of the parody when he's monologuing about "mentally retarded rappers not spitting dope shit" and attacking "dumbass" fans for being tricked by the production. So instead of people coming away from it like "Y'know what, he right though, that's funny" it comes off like a salty track, and people are just going to respond with "But why is that your best song?"

Tracklist looks good. Haven't heard Pt. 1 yet but its in the rotation for this weekend.

Mez, White Drake, and Jon Connor all on one track? Did Dre tell Game that he had to let the homies eat too if he wanted beats?

I still didn't bump Doc 2 yet. I skimmed through the snippets and I agree the second disc looks more west coast oriented, while the first disc had a east coast vibe to it (I could be reaching).

On another note, why in the hell Game didn't put the double album together? Shit is like Blueprint 2/Blueprint 2.5 all over again....
