There were workmen digging on the hill yesterday. This morn before the sun was up, whatever they'd done had obviously gone wrong, gushing water flowing down one side of the hill.
Was a strange image - me running fast down, splashing through this make shift river, stationary rush hour traffic...

Hey just a note that has been bugging me about your daily 5k updates... I think your pace calculation is super inconsistent unless I'm missing something there. You have faster paces on some longer times and what not. You may be just counting your whole run and not just a 5k distance, but I can't really tell.

Anyways, as for me, the temperature has started to drop pretty drastically and we have had some nasty weather outside that has deterred me from running some nights. My pace and distance have improved significantly from the start, I am feeling pretty comfortable running close to 8:00/mi pace even on longer 5-6 mile runs. I don't think I can do that for a whole half marathon, so I'll need to figure out how to pace myself a little better even if I'm feeling good to go faster earlier on in a run. I've also lost 4 lbs and lowered my body fat % since I started a month ago, even if that wasn't my original goal, it's nice to see some progress on my body.

10th Dec. - 32:57 mins. 10:23 /m or 6:27 /KM

Didn't find time before work - so ran in the evening - really dark and British rain pouring down like a bastard - I could barely see - so felt like a extra sluggish "rest run".
Was glad it was over and could get in the warm shower, I admit felt great I still went for it!

BTW, you're doing these daily 5ks, Saturday mornings 9am you should consider parkrun!

I work Saturdays - so sadly nocando :(
Thanks for the suggestion though

I think I was beginning to notice that not including the actual distance ran made the number look off - for instance the last 2 longer runs were about 6K due to the temporary route I found staying with friends... I'll update it with the proper distances from tomorrow as I'm sort of busy this evening with Chrimbo shenangians!
Thanks for pointing it out - I agree it should be clearer to see the changes.

10K Time Trial

Wow, hardcore! Well done!

Just completed the 2016 Dallas Half Marathon in 1'48"04. Season goal was 1'50" so I blew it out of the water. Going to a take a week or two off then start out with some easy jogs. Bonus sweaty photo

Many congratulations, that's a great time!
Where's the sweat? You look bone dry :p

Advent 5K: Now with distance info:
1st Dec. - 5.13KM at 30:32 mins - Pace: 09:35 /m or 5:57/KM

Ooh, I'm surprised that my "rest run" today was under 10:00 /m.
I guess it's a little more evidence I do operate better with food in my belly - in this case a massive healing Sunday roast pork loin ^_^

Grats on the PR!

Thx, right back at you, keep it up! :)

Congrats. Even if you don't look anything like Eric Woerth. :-(
Maybe a young Woerth? More hair? ;)

Man, I felt happy about myself last week doing 10K in 50 minutes, but that 4:00 average seems pretty inaccessible now.
Thanks! It only feels that way. I distinctly remember when I was only dreaming of being able to sustain 5min/K. So, good job, and keep at it, you'll surprise yourself!

Yah, I'm pretty much at this point right now myself. Finally hit sub-50 10k in October, but still feel like I have a long way to go before I reach my "running potential" having trained for only about a little over a year now; a little under if you don't include months I missed with a hamstring/IT band injury.

Still, despite my snaffu at CIM, I plan to keep pushing at it until I can hit my ultimate goal of running sub-7s consistently!

Good job everyone on your recent gains. I look up to a lot of your efforts.

So question for next year. Given my new PR on the half is it reasonable to target a 1'40" half by next December? I'm trying to figure out my goals for next year.

I just started the Couch to 5K program. I am on my third day and really liking it so far. I am also taking a rest day between each runs right now, but I hope that in the future I can run on a daily basis. Just want to take it easy at first and not push myself too hard as I don't want to get injured. As someone who hardly ever exercised this program is quite useful in motivating myself into doing some workouts.

You're doing it right. Keep that up and don't be afraid to repeat days of even whole weeks until you feel you've got it down. What I mean is - don't put any pressure on yourself, do what feels right.

Enjoy!

I actually got in to the Chicago, which I didn't expect to happen for some reason. I've only done 3 half marathons and this will be my first full. Here we go!

Nice! Keep us in the loop about your training :D

So that back pain I posted about the other day, turned out it was a kidney stone after all. Had to skip Thursday and Sunday's runs because I was in the hospital and while everything was over by Monday they told me to rest at least for a week.

Jelly about all you StravaGAF peeps posting your runs.

Oh man! I'm so sorry!
My mate just went through the same, except his stone was so big, the drugs didn't do anything and ended up in surgery a fortnight ago...

Get well soon, and wishing you a speedy recovery and back in your running shoes soon!

One of my friends who's in our group doing the advent 5K said "Roll on Boxing Day!" (Brit. Translation: the day after Christmas / 26th Dec. ) implying the final run was on Christmas Day...
Everyone went "U wot m8?" - as we all thought it would end on the 24th 😂
So now we're all agreed to do 25th as the final 5K. Balls 😂

Good run, good mood - hopefully start of a good day too!

Just got back from the doc and I've scheduled an MRI for mid December. I was hoping I can get a full diagnosis + recovery plan earlier but it is what it is.
Initial guess from the doc just by looking at X-Rays is wear or a small rip of the lateral meniscus.
Does anyone have experience with that kind of thing?

So I got an MRI yesterday and the diagnosis should translate to something like chondrosis (wear) of the main knee joint.
No wear or small rip of the lateral meniscus.

Going back to the other doc with the pictures to get a final diagnosis and hopefully a referral to a physiotherapist so I can work on getting back to running.
Hopefully that's all it takes!

Big grats on sub 40!

I want to hear EXACTLY what went through you head right after the race was done.
Thx! Went something like "shit ama gonna barf," then "holy crap I'm breathing loud."

My man! Gotta hit that sub-39 now ;)
Cheers dude! Done with 10K for a while though, might go back to that 5K plan, or just focus on some speed. Sorry to read about your hospital stay, never pleasant.

Done with 10K for a while though,

That's a shame. I was looking in your area for a 10k race 'cause if you can do that in training you'd kill it in a race... but WTF is going on over there? I saw all kinds of odd race lengths but no 10k until well into next year. Of course, might have just been a crappy site I found.

You flatter me, Kev
which I rly don't mind btw, keep going! ;)
. I've looked at races too, and assumed it was a combination of language barrier and me being an idiot not finding the proper ones. Glad to see It's not just me.

I'll go back to 10K eventually, but I kinda want to train for other distances, longer and shorter. Would like to build more speed.

And endurance.

And become rich handsome and famous. (It's nice to want things)

What are you doing now? Getting back into the swing of things? Left foot slowly coming back from the dead?

Damn, you're an inspiration bro!

I finally managed my first sub-50 10k (on a flat road) in October and now wanna see how just how much lower I can get it by the end of 2017 before I tackle marathon training again.

My goals for 2017 running is more speed and strength. Hit 1,200+ miles in 2016 despite spending the middling months of the year trying to get my IT band/hammies situated and lots and lots of elliptical was involved. Hope to stay consistent and rack up another 1,000 next year....but even earlier in the year this time!

I do mostly shorter intervals these days, so I decided to try #theswitchblade to mix it up and that is a real legkiller. felt my legs wanting to cramp up already at the second rest. 3x3 km with two minutes rest inbetween. first half of the interval at a steady pace (4:35min/km) and the second 1.5km at a faster pace (4:10min/km).

As for stretching, I follow this 20min yoga routine that was mentioned in an interview with one of the worlds best uphill runners https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=of2spyCtUkw

I decided some time back that settling for 2 out of the 3 will just have to do ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What are you doing now? Getting back into the swing of things? Left foot slowly coming back from the dead?

I honestly don't know what the heck I'm doing, offering myself to the gods of over-enthusiasm as usual probably. Desperately want to be back where I was, slowly realising that won't happen over a couple of weeks.

The left foot comes back from the dead at approx 5 miles - 3 miles is where it enters that state. If anyone can help me out there: like clockwork, no matter what pace above walking, no matter what shoes (literally ran in 9 or 10 different pairs, different fits, makes, different heel-to-toe drop... no matter what, I get a tingly foot that turns to a fully numb foot (feels like running on a plaster cast). 2 more miles and it will vanish within maybe 10 strides or so and feel really nice and cool and not dead. Had this for maybe 4 or 5 months.

Dude, didn't you just start running like a year ago? I was soooo much slower at that point. Keep going and you'll pass me by like it's nothing!

Yeah it's frustrating. And whatever successes you might have on your way back just feels hollow (to me anyway). Looking forward to try to run faster than I used to myself. Btw maybe you could try looking up a plan? I know some structure did me good when I didnt know wth I was doing.

You're already dead? Chop the leg off, have a blade installed? No idea.

Maybe it something form related? Maybe a nerve gets pinched by some muscle causing the numbness (a process which may begin well before 3 miles but only notice just then) and as the muscle heats up and expands the nerve gets released? I haven't the faintest idea.

Rest run was a little hairy today - I managed it fine - but my shins feel "glowy" and do ache now...
A couple of my friends in my advent 5K support group had to skip yesterday from shin splints - But they didn't do rest runs - so I'm cautiously smug...

Edit: ah sorry completely forgot to update yesterday - I wondered why the date count was off - def haven't missed a day yet!

It could well be form related, I tired to look and feel if I was doing anything differently recently and my left foot points outwards a bit, I also feel that I'm only really powering myself away properly with my right, not planting my left foot as hard or striding equally somehow - not sure if that's something I've subconsciously taught myself to do thanks to this problem.

I've contacted a sports podiatrist and will soon be throwing lots of money at the problem :/

You're already dead? Chop the leg off, have a blade installed? No idea.

Fallback plan.

I did it guys!

I achieved my once a year step-on-muddy-wet-leaves-and-eat-shit-in-front-of-a-bunch-of-people. Oh well, time to pig out over the holidays while I grow new flesh on my knee.

The slowest yet, but it was a rest day run so it still counts - I think I need to treat my legs extra well as calves are def sore, also pretty hungover, hopefully last big bash of the Chrimbo season is over now?

I just mapped my run and I've been doing 3.6mi every other day for a week and a half or so.

Gonna bump it up to 4,4 soon.

Went to my running teams' holiday running party and ran a 6:44 (average pace)/6:36 (average moving pace) mile. Big improvement over my previous attempts of 8:00 (a little over a year ago) and 7:05 (half year ago).

Curious to see how much more noobie gains I'll be able to reach through 2017! That being said, anyone have any opinions on overall pace vs avg moving?

Just curious about general consensus...

After knocking off over a minute from my 5k pb on Friday, I've got 50 seconds left to go before I reach my ultimate goal of sub 20 5k.

I really don't know how I'm going to do it. 50 seconds seems like a lifetime.

Don't think of it as 50 seconds, just 10 seconds per Km :)

Are you running on your own? You'll run a lot faster in a race.

I'm hurting just looking at it.

The pain... The pain....

It's the best kind of pain though, right?
Or is that a bit weird? I kinda look forward to it.

If you're at the point where you can still slice off a minute from a 5k time, that 50 seconds will soon get chipped away at. And definitely what autumnleaf said on both counts.
