... of late it's been not great - and I could almost rely on a run to help me feel a bit more on top of things - paranoid I'm not feeling these effects anymore. I don't know if I was getting overreliant, but been desperately missing those endorphins.
Prob because I usually start to feel them around mile 4 or 5, maybe it's time to get back to a slightly longer run?

Final week -

Opps, last post cut off - was just saying 5K a day isn't a bit deal overall - but making it to the last week has felt like a nice accomplishment to round off the year...

So this is all coming to an end, and I'm starting to be curious about seeing some trends, here's a quick and dirty graph of pace per mile versus each day passed:

I guess it is very slowly going down, implying I'm getting faster/fitter by a few seconds?

I feel like I have a set time limit before my body starts to crap out on me because I seem to get tired after the exact same amount of time regardless of how fast I was running.

Everyone is different but I personally wouldn't expect to get much faster running every day for weeks, basically I wouldn't focus on the pace too much. I think after you're done and you have a full rest day with no running you'll feel the benefits more.

Exactly. I've had more rest days in the last week because of colder weather and my headphones breaking on me which has decentivized me from running until I get a new pair, but I ran last night and was feeling great from the jump. Noticed I was running close to the pace for my best 5k since I started running in November and I went for it. I was able to comfortably do a 5k in 23:23, knocking about 15 seconds off my time without even being in a race environment. I attribute that to letting myself have a few rest days. There was no soreness or anything.

Did my 96th run of the year today but didn't get a chance to warm up due to circumstances. Unfortunately I've strained my Achilles and/or calf and it's quite sore walking up and down stairs.

I've got parkrun tomorrow so I'll see how I feel in the morning but I really want 100 runs for 2016 so hoping this is just a niggle and I'll be able to run 4 more times before the end of next week.

I just checked and apparantly I've done 198 runs this year and 2110 miles. I had a couple of very bad months with injuries in May and June that restricted those months a lot. Prior to May I managed a sub 90 half and sub 40 10k so those were my main goals for 2016, I'm not really sure what I'll aim for next year.

Ah, dammit I wanted a sub-9 min/m for my final proper run.
Last two days are scheduled as rest days - so I guess its smooth sailing now - I'm surprised how fast December's been!

Yeah - I guess time to really think about 2017 - I'm about 1.5 years into this sport that I begun so randomly and it is def a part of my life even if I'm a complete noob.
I'm glad for it - but I need to work out better goals and generally how to balance additional strength training and diet... I'm really glad I've managed to do the advent run - def nice way to cap off the hear.

Dusted this off at 06:15am - nice rest run - final day incoming

I'm amazed. I hadn't run my "long" this week as planned. I usually run it Saturday. I got back from my parents around 1130. I was going to fire up Tomb Raider but I couldn't do it. I dressed and hopped on my apartment Treadmill and executed the run.

4 months ago I wouldn't have done this. But now I don't think I could have forgiven myself if I hadn't. It really makes me want to work very hard next year and get that sub 1'40" half in.

Whaddya mean, final day? December has 31 days ;P

It's great isn't it, how the discipline takes root in ones mind? "I could, theoretically, skip a run but..."

I love my running days because it's a bubble of familiarity amidst the possible chaos of modern life. The day or the week might have sucked, but it doesn't matter because it's running time and everything's going to be OK.

I think that summarizes my feelings well. This past fall was my last semester of grad school. I had a particularly stressful back half of the work year as well. Honestly if I didn't have my training I would have turned into a slovenly mess.

It's Advent 5K :p
So following an advent calendar - I've done my 25th day! But hey why not last 5 days of the month? I'll see what state I'm in tomorrow - today is for eating and drinking too much!

Definitely - it's been a pretty tough December for me - and after everything and everyone that have been going wrong in some way or another - all that matters is to get out there and get my run in, something I'm doing for me - the mental / mindful side of running has really changed my life overall.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels this way.

Maybe it's a time to be a little sentimental - but thanks to everyone for being so supportive - and has been really nice to share this little personal challenge with you all.

And so:
1st Dec. - 5.13KM at 30:32 mins - Pace: 09:35 /m or 5:57/KM
2nd Dec. - 5.15KM at 30:48 mins - Pace: 09:38 /m or 5:59/KM
3rd Dec. - 5.44KM at 34:26 mins - Pace: 10:11 /m or 6:20/KM

25th Dec. - 5.12KM at 33:00 mins. - Pace: 10:22 /m or 6:27 /KM (estimated)

Sadly I somehow forgot to start the running app today, but since it was a rest run, and I knew I wasn't going crazy I took an example rest run of the same route as the estimated time...

But 25 days in a row, I can't believe I actually managed it!
And just calculated 133.37 KM / 82.87 miles! Woah

Usually run 5km on a treadmill, I average around 23min 18sec, fastest I've done it was 21min 26sec. Next year I'm hoping to aim for a sub 20min 5km on the treadmill. I think those times are quite decent since i hold quite a bit of body fat, I'm around 83kg and only 5'7.

Yesterday on Christmas day the gym was closed so I ran 11km outdoors in under 54min. Again I'm hoping for a sub 45min 10km.

Boxing day 10k yesterday, slightly tougher course than Wilmslow 3 weeks earlier, but fitness returning - about a minute quicker and only a few seconds off 40:00. Shame I don't have others coming up 'cause it feels like there's more to come.

January is all kinds of parkrun tourism (weekly 5ks), a cheeky 5 mile trail race and the first real race of the year is central lancashire 5k, what should have been my first ever race this year (noob injury), so it seems to make sense to work on the speedy stuff for that... before ramping up for Manchester Marathon early April.

But 25 days in a row, I can't believe I actually managed it!
And just calculated 133.37 KM / 82.87 miles! Woah

It's been great seeing your day to day progress, I can only hope you didn't get too burned on running and look forward to seeing what your new goals are going to be! :)

Once you start slimming down and doing some speedwork you are going to get noticeably faster, I'm certain of it. Good luck on achieving your goal and keep us updated! :)

So glad to see you back in the game, man. Keep on kicking ass :D

Hi all, thought I'd post here to say hello as I've been a lurker on Gaf for absolutely ages and been running for even longer.

This past year has been great for personal running goals but not so great for life events. Through it all I've been lucky enough to have running to turn to - not just for speed and fitness but to help clear my head and contextualise all of the events going on.

I've taken part in 4 half marathons, each slightly faster than the last. PBs:

Half marathon: 1:38
10k: 37mins
5k: 19:21

Aiming to beat all of those this year, with the focus on sprint distances for the first 6months then lengthier from July/Aug. Had a few good runs over the last few days, 8 or 9 miles each avg ~7:30p/m. Finally feeling good again after a few injuries over October and november.

Thanks to everyone here for the unknowing inspiration and support over the last 12 months!

I'm sure you can knock A LOT of time off that half-marathon with a 10k PB like that! My 10k is 39 something and my half is 1:28 (And you must have beaten your 5k PB during that 10 as well!)

With a 10k time like that you should be aiming for sub 1:25 for a half.

You're definitely right, but I've traditionally always trained around that 10k distance so think I've just conditioned myself to the point in which it's quite common for me to blow out around the 10mile point on halves. Really annoyed at myself but just need to slowly train up again.

Also, that 10k was right at the start of the year at a point where I was probably at my fittest.

Got a 10k race on the 1st Jan followed by 5k the day after so will have to see how those play out!

That 10k is a stand-out time there, you smashed your 5k time twice over :) If you can do a 37:00 10k and you find a nice flat half to go at, that 1:38 is going to get blown tf away!

EDIT: oops, autumnleaf pretty much said the same thing :D

Welcome to the club! I'm still relatively new to the world of running myself so it's always nice to meet a new face :).

Ha! Yeah for sure, it was certainly one of those 'wtf how did that even happen' runs. Felt pretty incredible at the time, not so much the next day...

Thanks! Same to you. I'm based in London UK, i'm guessing the majority of runners here are US based?

London UK too. West London to be precise!

Whoops, you are absolutely right! I hope you enjoyed your well earned rest.

Thanks a lot! Wasn't sure if my rundown was getting boring haha - I'm def not burned out but 5K feels like a convenient weekly little run, ultimately isn't really helping me progress too much. I will need to try out that Turkey Trot stuff properly, I found it interesting to be focusing on speed for bursts and it seemed like something different to the usual.
I think need to get back to >8K longer runs that felt more substantial and rewarding after - gets the dopamine going too - I like roughly 60 min runs - so I need to maybe try to see how many miles I can start to rack up in that time.

Big Smoke represent too - I'm NW.
Pondering a some 10K in London in Feb. 2017, but not sure I can really find the time atm :/

If you're in London and looking at 10k runs I'd recommend a company called Run-Through, I've done some of their races and they're really well done and they usually have a run most weekends around London.

Also if you're looking to progress pace wise, my rough routine when I got the biggest gains in pace was something like this

Monday: Interval speed run (30-40 minutes), going between a jog and all out.
Tuesday: Day off
Wednesday : Slow longer run (45-60 minutes)
Thursday: Slow longer run (45-60 minutes) but with a sprint finish for the last mile.
Friday: Day off
Saturday: Medium paced run (30-40 minutes), whatever your current pace is
Sunday: Long slow run (60-90 minutes), taking it easy barely getting your heartrate up

I was stuck at a particular pace for months till I tried to change things up and did a routine like that and I set a bunch of PBs within a few weeks. I think just changing things up helps a lot.

Very nice! Good send off to 2016 ;)

Also did a race today, managed to pull off 40:08. Not bad considering the couple of weeks I was off my feet and the fact that there were close to 11500 runners (I swear people kept spawning in front of me...).

Still, I think I run better on morning races.

Saw the Strava activity. Came for reaction gif. Was not disappointed.

Well done!

You've hardly run since the enforced rest, proper effort.

I'm off for a NYD parkrun double tomorrow, 62 mile round trip to run 2 little 5ks. Ran the local one with my 10yo nephew today, very steady as he's been quite ill, but he almost left me for dead at the sprint finish, pushing 5min/mile pace in the last few metres!

Outstanding time given the circumstances, good job!

Slow people (starting waaaay ahead of where they should be) are the fucking worst. Unlike you, only had about 1700 or 1800 to deal with, but dammit it never fails. Found a reasonable spot in the starting crowd, yet the first K was all dodgin people left and right, moving to the side, onto the grass, etc. Cussed out a few of them, had been having a rough day and had ZERO patience for their bullshit.

Still, I think I run better on morning races.
You and your morning runs, you gots problems, man. ;)

Ouch, schooled by your 10yo nephew, that one must have stung, old man. :)

Bonus pics:

Edit: ran for a few Ks with the guy in white next to me in the first pic. He pulled away in the last K to finish ahead of me. I was like, I aint even mad, am doing work here. Patted him on the back and congratulated him on a job well done at the finish line.

Nice runs and times everyone! Some really good 10K times, need to give it a go next week.

Just got in from my first run of the year, absolutely brutal first few Ks with a banging hangover but it slowly faded and actually finished feeling pretty good.

Oh, and happy new years and all that.

Starting 'em young I see! Soon he'll be the one coaching you.

I also love "Random Pedestrian Crossing the Street" and "By my corner cutting you'd think I was a tailor instead of a runner"-runners. I try (and most of the time, fail :p) not to cuss at them, and use the hate as fuel instead.

Guilty as charged! Can't help it, man. I even shifted my schedule so that the food timing and such was equal to when I race on Sunday morning and I didn't feel as refreshed. Although I gotta say having dinner for breakfast is kind of awesome :).

Look at that fierce beast ;p

Especially in chip timed races, they're gaining nothing only spoiling it for others. It's a great way to attract elbows I bet.

Corner cutters can FRO. Dunno how they have the stones to do that in full view of the rest of us. They're just marking themselves for getting beat.

There's probably a term for these ones, but I don't know it: they're on your shoulder for a little while, finally kick on and pass, but instead of vanishing after a cool glance at the watch, they park the bus right in front of you... now it's like they're now out for a Sunday trot by the river. Their arms will become twice as wide, they'll weave side to side, they'll match your pace as you attempt to get on with things. Fuck those guys.

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
Ok, weird question, but has anybody had interference in their GPS route mapping from low flying planes?

This morning I went out on my usual 10K route, and I noticed that for whatever reason (atmospheric, I guess) that two commercial planes were flying lower and slower than normal for where we live, ~40 miles from the nearest big airport. Anyway, I get back and check out my run on my phone and it showed big gaps in the exact same places I noticed the two planes going over. I check Strava and there's big zig zags, and it's showing me having run an extra mile!

A bit gutted because it was actually a pretty great run I wouldn't have minded getting seeing stats for. Will probably have to delete it because it's tarnishing about 8 PBs as well!

Yes, I've done a couple of their races - a 10K and my first half marathon was with them.
Def going to do more, they sent a mail with upcoming 10Ks, so prob aim for a March one.

Thanks for the suggestions - sounds great - I'm a bit of a convert to the whole rest run thing - so def going to keep those going. I admit finding the time is hard, I'm going to take it a little easier as I'm kind if hurting though..

Went for a short 3-mile run yesterday, was a bit disappointed that my right leg shin splints are really acting up - I thought a week off would solve it a bit.
I guess more stretching and foam rolling... I'm annoyed to be hurting now after all the running a week ago.

A week off won't do much to fix shin splint/compartment syndrome issues, personally it was more like a month and then it hadn't gone, it just became sort niggly and manageable, but still hurt for days after anything pacey and the first few weeks back there was plenty of denial and telling myself it was all OK - so tempting to do too much again.

My problems stopped when I rested for around 3-4 weeks, had physio, did daily strengthening exercises several times a day with bouts of icing (horrible). When I started back I had to cut down the weekly mileage as I'd been doing too much too soon - shin splints are often a result of overdoing it. I just did a parkrun a week and a lot of dog walking and cycling. A compression sleeve helped, or maybe it was in my head. Stopped wearing shoes with a large heel-to-toe drop and stopped heel-striking. Wearing a more minimal, flat shoe I soon got the feel for a bit of better form - when every foot that lands hurts you kind of do naturally, especially downhill.

You ran 3 miles + a day for the best part of a month, that's a lot of running without recovery if you weren't already running 30+ mile a weeks before, no matter the pace. I wouldn't fancy doing it now, not a chance! I ran nearly 200 miles in December, but there was a lot of rest and walking in between.

EDIT: Sorry, Festwill, I'll be more careful next time and avoid taking your rightful spot at the top of the page /o\
