Jason Kidd murdered my dog in cold blood!
The hate he gets is completely unwarranted, but it's hard not to be annoyed with him, at the very least.

Considering how quickly EVERY OTHER FANTASY AUTHOR publishes book, I think there's reason to be annoyed with GRRM. It will be 20+, possibly even 25 years, to complete a series. That's insane. It's especially annoying when you realize that the first 3 books were only 2 years between each.

I actually find the thought of experiencing the feeling of seeing new material on TV first to be interesting.
As a book reader I pretty much freaked out at the white walker baby scene. I loved the idea of being spoiled and the story continuing.

Hmm, well at least we get some plot progression.

It was like watching those videos on Youtube of Batman vs Darth Vader.

It was so stupid

It was a pretty silly way for the Hound to be humiliated. Also, her matching him in brute strength...didn't fit in with the books at all. Well, he was in crap condition though.

Shit, I don't like the show that much and stopped watching but enjoy the books.

It will be seemly impossible to ignore spoilers so I might have to watch.

I actually dont mind the show spoiling at all. Baby White Walker scene last season was cool.

I just dont have much faith in the show writers ability to create major arcs or conflicts on their own.

I'm worried were gonna get a lot more moments like the Ironborn vs mean ass dogs that will steal your very soul with fear

The most exciting bit of the show for me so far, as a guy who's read the books, was easily the scene with the White Walkers and the baby. I find it difficult to complain about the idea of getting a few seasons of that sort of thing.
Is this the final season (and book)?

Nah. There's still (at least) two more books to be published, and the show's going to seven seasons.

This season will see all characters basically where they are in the books at the moment, with some almost certainly going further. Everyone's in uncharted territory after this season.

It will be interesting to see how they deviate.

In a way it will show how tightly or loosely grrm has everything planned out. He sounds like more of a "plan very little and let the characters work themselves out" sort of author.

Well this is obvious. It already started spoiling shit last season.

And GRRM is just a slow-ass writer/procrastinator. He used the "Mereneese knot" as an excuse with ADWD, but it's clear that had nothing to do with it. :p

There is two more books coming I believe so probably 3 more seasons.

Personally I'll be seriously surprised if GRRM manages to tie this shit up in just two more books.

lol at people getting mad at Martin

People read a book series for 20 years and get a watered down, made-for-TV version of the ending. They have every right to be angry. They'll never be able to read the ending of this series without knowing most of what will happen. Only satisfaction the book readers will get is conclusions to lackluster side stories the books have had like the Greyjoys and Jon "It's fucking nothing" Connington.

Which is why I am totally resigned to watching the show and then filling it in with the books (eventually)

I really hope eventually they do Robert's Rebellion cause that would be awesome as fuck to watch.

This is my plan. Although, I fear I may end up never reading the books once I know the whole story. I want to now, but I don't know how I'll feel once the task is actually at hand. I guess I'll wait and see how people like the next books.

And doing a Robert's Rebellion season or series would have been great.

Absolutely genius if you ask me

"Hey GRRM, the ending to the GOT show was fucking stupid and everyone hated it, the books are different right?"

GRRM: "Haha, of course they are! But just out of curiousity..." *takes out notepad* "what specifically didn't people like about it. You know, to compare."

That sucks, but I'm not sure why people think it'll be hard to avoid spoilers until the books come out. I didn't start reading/watching until this past year and I managed to avoid every spoiler. Don;t go actively searching for the stuff and you most likely won;t find it. GoT fans aren't Danganronpa fans.

I guess it's time to bow out of the show then. I've accepted that I'm going to be spoiled but I don't really care as the story is more than just a series of shocking events and deaths, at least to me anyway. As much as I love the show, I just wouldn't enjoy experiencing the story for the first time that way. The writers are decent at creating nice character moments but they can't create new plot points at all. I'm glad people have been shitting on that Ironborn and the dogs scene because that's the worst crap ever. Locke's stuff beyond the Wall was also incredibly pointless. The show had the fookin legend, Karl Tanner though so I'll give it credit for that. I'm not really much of a purist and I would like to continue watching it but the writing is just not up to par with the books so it would suck to experience that first now that I'm already invested in the books. I look forward to catching up with the show when George finally finishes it in 20 years

But seriously though, what they hell is going on in Oldtown? Why has Leyton Hightower not descended or been seen from Hightower in over a decade? Shit like that is why the books take so long, they're too deep.

Of course this was going to happen - eventually. GRRM is too slow writing the books but D&D are also going through the book material too quickly. It is what it is. Book fans will just have to avoid the internet for the next 8+ years, assuming the books are even finished by then.

I seriously doubt it will be easy, anecdotal but I know a lot of people that watch the series but never read the books, spoilers will fly everywhere.

My girlfriend feels the exact same way. I don't even tell her GoT news anymore because it just makes her angry at GRRM. Me, I'm just excited to get to see the end of the story, since he's taking so long to write it and I don't feel like waiting decades.

lmao I'm the same way. Even though I actually semi-follow GoT news, and am half-interested, half-pissed that I likely won't be reading the final book until the 2020s.

At this point I'm pretty much hate-watching the show tbh. I thought S4 was really, really mediocre and very little out of what we know about S5 has me excited.

The only thing that makes me happy about all this is we're finally getting some continuation on Sansa's storyline, no matter how butchered, cut, and whitewashed it'll be. It's been 15 years since she had a proper story arc. @_@

This is one of the most "duh" statements I have ever read. Anyone who's read all 5 books and seen all 4 seasons couldn't have possibly thought that they'd read the end first.

This is going to kill the theory community that has sprung up over the recent years. Since we are going to know what's going to happen we're not going to get anymore crazy speculation like Euron=Darrio.

I expected it. Still annoying but ultimately Martin brought this on himself and the fans by not taking things as seriously as he should have

All that being said there's also some karma in this, given how shitty many book readers have been to show watchers. I've seen so many people spoil random shit as if to make themselves look better/smarter than show watchers. Sure I think the show is kind of bad and not nearly as interesting as the books, but ultimately I'm not going to ruin shit for people. That's a dick move.

Even if you stop watching the show to avoid spoilers it'll be impossible to avoid being spoiled. Thanks a lot, Martin...

I don't think GRRM ever finishes the book series.

And I'm not saying that to be one of those "DURR HE'S FAT AND OLD AND TOTALLY GONNA DIE SOON" people. I just think he'll eventually decide to take it beyond seven books and then die at a ripe old age, though having not finished the series.

And I watched it with book readers who loved it. It adds Brienne seeing Arya, which seems like it's important towards the confirmation that Arya is still alive and giving Brienne a mission going forward. It frees Arya from the Hound and allows her to make a decision on helping him or leaving, and defines her independence from not trusting Brienne.

A lot of that is handled in a much more subtle way in the books. I just can't think of a logical reason to deviate from the book plot other than "hey, these two are both really good fighters, we should have them face off!"

That's what bothered me about it.

I think that GRRM literally does not give a fuck anymore...He doesn't want to write more books in the series, and probably feels as if it is too much pressure anyway, and no matter what he writes people will shit on it. It's just a shame as the fans have invested many years to the series but in the end he's the one who will write it or not.

I think he just doesn't give a shit anymore. Like Dumas with Monte Cristo, he just got tired with it. Difference is now, he has people who can finish the story for him, and he's letting him.

So in all of the giant wilds of Westeros they just so happen to run smack into each other?

The show handled it logically. They weren't both at the Eyrie for shits and giggles.

It was also much more satisfying than Sandor's book end, and about 1000x more meaningful than Brienne's 100+ pages of mediocre filler in AFFC.

Edit: also should add that in the books, Brienne spends another useless chunk of time specifically looking for Sandor, only to find out later that he was already critically wounded.

The worst book readers weren't the ones that spoiled things out right... those guys got taken care of right away and their comments removed. It was the ones that made statements like "I can't wait to see everyone's reactions after next weeks show..." or ""I'm glad you guys didn't see that one coming" that were the worst. They made those comments knowing they could get away with it. They didn't outright spoil anything but they diminished the effect of any surprises and their comments were just pompous.

Now people can go in to the Book thread and say "I can't wait until you guys get the chapter about Bran... just you wait, it is amazing!"

Oh yeah, that's the worst. They always add "I'm not really spoiling anything!" if they get called out for pretty much spoiling it. "If you're a fan of _____, well, I won't say anything, but I hope they do their scene from the book justice :)"

I'm cool with this because at least well get a real GRRM directed ending instead of Sanderson or someone else tidying up plot.

I started reading last year and I've had no spoilers. I'm currently on second book and like 200 pages in to it. I have no idea what'll happen next, and I'm glad I don't know anything.

Only GoT fans I know are the book readers. So I know they wont spoil anything since they don't really watch the show.

It's called world building.

He built a continent of boredom. There was no way AFFC could ever be faithfully adapted because nothing happens in half of the novel. There's a reason it's being squeezed into one season with Dance. And there's a reason it's widely considered the worst entry in the series.

It's going to suck when the book ending is different, and we won't know how much it's due to fan reaction to the show's ending.
