What I liked this week:
- Tywin making Joffery feel like the little shit he is.
- That one shot where the camera lingers after Shae leaves, with the door opening framing Tyrion in it.

What I didn't like this week:
- All the usual shit I don't like about this adaptation.
- Theon's scenes are turning into self-parody filler, same shit different scenario, more screaming, lulz, zzzzzzzz.
- Jon and Yggrite's scenes are awful. They don't really have much chemistry and it all feels forced. It's also starting to feel like filler, like the Theon scenes, where it's the same shit every week, just in a different way. Zzzzzzzzzzzz.

Haha, I was just going to say that Jon and Ygritte's scene by the windmill was great, and that this is the best Kit Harrington has been on the show in a while.

Personally, I'll be rolling my eyes if the spy thing plays out the way the conspiracy video is suggesting. Making Talisa a Lannister spy comes off as gratuitous and a little contrived in TV land terms, assuming they take the adaptation aspect of the book events very literally. There's no need to add extra elements to how doomed the Red Wedding is naturally, and how Robb was betrayed. Roose Bolton's backstabbery is plenty sufficient.

ASOS/show speculation
I'm not sure why you would describe it as contrived. As it is explained in the video, having her be a Lannister spy actually makes sense.

Kit usually does good work when he's actually given something to do other than stand there and look dumb. Which isn't very often, but is happening a bit more now.

I'm pretty much the opposite. I think the Theon scene and Jon/Ygritte scene were the best of the last episode.

I would agree if we got an alternate reality episode where instead of grinding on Theon the scene was the two girls getting naked and making out with each other, and in the Ygritte scene while she's standing there talking about whatever crap she talks about all the time, a random stray arrow from somewhere flies and lodges itself in her neck with blood oozing out all over and Jon making some "oh noes what do I do" face. :D

I could oversee the bear not feeling threatening but with this whole scene we lost:
Book:
Jaime dreaming about being in an endless dark with evil nearby. And the only person there to aid him is Brienne standing back to back with him.
He wakes up from this dream and convinces the party to go back to Harrenhall.
Getting there and seeing Brienne Vargo/Locke sais: "You want her? Go get her" Jaime: "Oh good, I only rescue maidens." He jumps in. The guards escorting him shoots the bear dead in the last minute. As they are riding to King's landing, Brienne asks Jaime why he came back. He answers: "I dreamed of you."

The book already had the perfect episode ending punch. God damnit George R.R Martin. Butchering your own work.

Some things in print are not as easily shown nor as believable when actually dramatized. The reasoning behind Jame returning to save her was still sound and it accomplished the needed objectives for the sequence. It illustrated that he cares for her and it continued his move towards being a sympathetic character. They also were able to further inform people about Qyburn's past in one fell swoop so it worked out nicely. It also reiterated the overarching message from the series that lying can have negative consequences even if the intentions were pure.

IIRC, GRRM did not write the Jaime/Brienne scenes, even though that became the name of the episode. Apparently after he turned in the script, they made editing changes in the series which moved those scenes into this episode, and subsequently named it as such because that's the most exciting event. The episode was originally titled "Autumn Storms" before being renamed to "Chains" and then renamed again to "The Bear and the Maiden Fair".

I don't like Show Jon and Show Ygritte either to be honest, they're both dull and boring.

I see many people who expect the show to be nothing but climaxes and care little for character development. Shame.

The Theon bitching is especially annoying, it DOES have a point, though I do agree the castration couldve been held off until later in the season.

Episode 9 speculation
Supposedly as the wedding goes on it gradually becomes darker and more foreboding. I think a good time for the Ramsay reveal would be a little over halfway through the episode. Enough time for people to get a bad feeling about everything that's going on (add to the sense of dread) but with no time to think through what's happening.

has the show not made it painfully obvious who he is?

I've seen people say this before but I really liked Book Jon for some reason.

I feel Jon is more likeable in the books because we can project our own youth onto him, and see him as the optimistic young hero who is going through tough times and has to learn about the world the hard way. But on screen he just feels like another pretty faced fantasy hero who's rather annoying to watch because the actor lacks range and everything looks a bit too nice. It doesn't help that Beyond the Wall in the books could be imagined as a winter hellhole, while on the show most of the time it looked like a nice holiday getaway location. :p

I always thought of Beyond the Wall as a cold wild place, but not as desolate as the show. Well perhaps I should phrase it to say that I figured most of the North Beyond the Wall we see in the books is closer to how it was represented in the opening of Season 1 and around Craster's Keep. The ice they were walking on in Season 2 around the Fist of the First Men looked ridiculous. The forest extends far north and the Frostfangs are mountains, not gobs of ice. I doubt The Wildlings could honestly survive on a land like that.

Am I the only one that finds that Jon and Ygritte have a great chemistry? I loved their exchanges last night. I had quite a few chuckles.

And Theon...he really sold his scene last night. Guy's a pretty terrific actor.

I also think Dinklage was great last night as well.

ASOS
I can't wait to see him shine next season. There are going to be so many great scenes.

If you have no knowledge of the source material (definitely the very vast majority of viewers) then you have no reason to know who he might be.

Series
It is possible to figure it out if you're only been watching the show. Especially if you actually pay attention to house sigils and whatnot. They've shown the Flayed Man of House Bolton multiple times. I guess the show doesn't really drive it into your head though that House Bolton is all about flaying dudes. One of my friends did figure that when they first showed Theon's torture room and the device he was strapped to. But he doesn't know what it means in the grand scheme of things that House Bolton is holding Theon and is interested in what happened with the Stark boys.

Someone left a great comment in the other thread. I'm spoilering it just in case, but I'm sure they didn't mean it as one.

ASOS
Also let me say that Tywin is the SHIT. It cannot be said enough.

Nope. I thought Jon/Ygritte have been great so far. Ygritte sells the "You BETTER not betray me" angle very well.
the Jon/Ygritte stuff is just
-lol you know nothing jon snow
-lets have sex

repeated about a billion fucking times
ASOS
until she finally bites the dust, can't wait

lol I liked that one. I also liked the comment where someone listed ASOS
the various weddings coming up, as well as the death of Cat's father and stated that Season 3 could be called "4 weddings and a funeral."
Bwahaha.

So a lot like the book.

Still, as I said before, I think the actors are doing a good job with the material.

The best part of Jon's story was skipped over last year with Halfhand, and his ASOS
arc is basically "You know nothing, lets fuck" until Queenscrown.
It was Kit's best episode in a long time, he wasn't the downtrodden push over and I enjoyed his dialogue with Yg

oh don't misunderstand me, not a comparison to the books
I hated the exact same shit in the books too, out of all the damn things they changed in the adaptation I have no idea how the fuck they left that in -.-

I didn't really like book Jon or Dany very much until the second half of ASOS, so it's fine with me that the show versions aren't that interesting either. The only Jon point that i liked in the books up to this point was the scene where he met Mance.

Yeah, most of that stuff goes completely over everyone's heads. It's a tribute to your friend that he noticed anything.

General comment spoilers
I also don't think most people are even familiar with the concept of what "flaying" a man even means. Beyond that, it feels very foreign to consider someone's house would be symbolized by the fact they torture people when most everyone else is represented by inanimate objects or animals.

Let's be honest

I'd say Jon's arc in AGOT is good. My interest in his story plummeted with ACOK. I'll just never get the appeal of Qhorin Halfhand. I think Jon's ASOS arc is much better, but it really is him and Ygritte fucking until Queenscrown.

Their relationship is incredibly short-lived in the books.
She vouches for him in one chapter, there's the cave scene in one chapter, the wall in another, and then the escape. That's it.

People love relationships in their fiction. I know Jon/Ygritte was my girlfriend's favorite part of the entire series.
