Gameboy 25th Anniversary Thread - April 21

Ah, the Gameboy. I remember having this almost exclusively for Pokemon (back in the days when you actually did buy a console for one game), although I do think I played Super Mario Land 2 on it as well. I liked the chunky design, it felt solid, like it had weight to it.

It's kinda sad that the Gameboy line has died out, and with the Micro no less.

Me and my brothers got a Gameboy Pocket for Christmas in like 96 or 97 and that was the beginning of my gaming career. Man I still remember that Christmas, good times.

my dad bought one with tetris for him in 1994 or 5. And I begged for a game or me i didn't want tetris as my only possible game, so he got killer instinct with the cleaning kit. I remember having a blast with that game. Not so much for todays standars

I'm sure this will bring back a ton of memories for gamers from Europe. :)

This certainly was the magazine that made me pick up a Game Boy soon after it was released over here. I remember going over this guide dozens and dozens of times with my best friend, thinking about how great it would be to be able to play such a thing.

Gameboy + Battletoads in Ragnarok's World was my first console and game. Never got past the bike section.

A good portion of my all time favourite games are on the Gameboy: Super Mario Land 1 and 2, SML3: Wario Land, Link's Awakening, Pokémon Blue, Kirby's Dream Land, Snoopy's Magic Show.

I'm most partial to the GBA Micro and the GBA SP.

And while we're talking about great Nintendo Hand Held designs, I vote for the DS Lite being the best thing Nintendo ever design.

That thing is just visual sex, yo.

Crappy hinge and definitely on the lower echelon in my book. Definitely prefer the matte DSi.

Really awesome OP and thread. I remember my parents getting one on release day for my Brother and I. Playing so much Tetris, then my Dad brought home the Castlevania game. Damn near impossible game but I had a blast with it.

28 years old today... never realized I shared my birthday with the gameboy. Love the little bastard growing up... terrible ghosting green screen and all.

man, why did a lot of us play Dragon's Lair? It seems to pop out in every GB thread, lol. It was baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad

bloody hell you hit me with a full nuclear blast of nostalgia, meppi

I remember this issue

making me excited for a game (SML2) in a way I couldnt sleep at night, counting the days til release. THESE graphics on the Game Boy? Surely you jest!

I'm so close to buying an original Gameboy off Ebay, i've wanted one for a few years but this thread is pushing me to buy one NOW!!!!

I actually pulled out my GB Pocket yesterday, not knowing it was the anniversary.

I had forgotten how bad the LCD is. I can't believe I would play on that for hours at a time. It's borderline unusable now. GB Color is thankfully a pretty massive improvement.

I went through an old box of mine only to find some old GB games. In fact, I was shocked to find that I still had the first 2 GB games I ever owned:

:D Yeah that magazine sure is a blast from the past.
I really need to start working on the scans for the ones I have of that for my site.
I was holding of since I'm missing the first couple of issues, but they seem nearly impossible to find, so I might as well start with the ones I do have, beginning with Club Nintendo Volume 1 Issue 3 (1989).

BTW hot linking doesn't work on outofprintarchive, better use this link:

Compared to the original brick GB the Pocket's screen is also a MASSIVE improvement actually. But yeah it's kind of crazy how we would put up with such shitty screens back then and not even care.

Some random game memories:

Adam's Family:

Pretty neat little action platformer. I remember lots of variety in the levels and that it was hard, but progress was still possible.

Alien 3:

One of the better alien games. Really tough, but lots to do and I thought the graphics were really impressive for the time.

Mortal Kombat

Speaking of impressive graphics, the MK port was mind blowing. Sure it ran at like 1fps, but it still looked cool, even if you couldn't see the blood.

Jurassic Park:

I wanted the megadrive version so bad (I didn't have a megadrive) so this was the best I could get. It kind of sucked, but it had some cool moments as well like dodging the triceratops herd.

Nintendo World Cup:

Awesome little soccer game, even if some moves were a bit OP.

Kwirk

I don't think I quite wrapped my head around the harder levels, but certainly gave me hours of effort.

Happy anniversary to the Gameboy, and all of its followers while we're at it!

I started with it on Christmas 1990 I believe, with Tetris and Duck Tales, and it's been a pretty huge inspiration in me wanting to go into game development - this obsession probably started right then and there, actually. I remember sketching endless design plans for fictional sequels to games I enjoyed, like Megaman, Jurassik Parc or even Felix the Cat (yeah...).

I still think Mystic Quest/Final Fantasy Adventure/Seiken Densetsu is one of the best games ever, and I'm glad it got mentioned right at post 3. FF Legend 3 is also something I have fond memories of... and then, we move on to GBC library, and this post never ends!

Thankfully it lives on to this day thanks to all the ways we can play those games. Here's to another 25 years of B&W (or rather, yellow and dark green) and awesome chiptune music.

I got my first Gameboy for Christmas 1995, it was the "High Tech Transparent" one:

Then I sold it and got a Yellow Gameboy Pocket along with a Gameboy Camera and the Gameboy Printer in 1997.

I skipped the GBC era and got a Glacier Gameboy Advance in 2001

Finally I swapped my Glacier GBA for a Silver GBA SP

The games I remember the most are:
  • Tetris
  • Super Mario Land
  • Super Mario Land 2
  • Warioland
  • Pokémon Yellow
  • Gameboy Camera

The GBA era games:
  • Mario Kart Super Circuit
  • Golden Sun
  • Golden Sun 2
  • Pokémon Sapphire
  • Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3
  • Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
  • Metroid Fusion

I wish they released a 25th anniversary Gameboy or 3DS to commemorate this event. It would be awesome!

That's a pretty cool idea. With retro games being as popular as they are today (especially Nintendo's platforms) Nintendo could probably make quite a bit of money by producing and selling redesigned versions of their old hardware. I guess the problem though would be sourcing all the old parts that might not even be manufactured anymore.

Memories:

1) was told for months that I will never get one because the news says they will make you blind and my mom was THAT MOM. Then, Christmas 90, I opened up SUPER MARIO LAND! OH MY GOD! I was confused. "Shit," my mom said. "That's from me. Open the bigger one there from your grandma" OH FUCK I GOT GAMEBOY! I did the N64 kid thing.

Seriously the best Christmas of my entire life and something I still remember fondly.

2) My stepuncle found a copy of Gator Pinball in the slushy snow a few thousand miles away while on a trucking trip. He wrapped it up in paper towels and when he got home gave it to me. Still runs to this day! Was a fun game, but fuck me I could never beat even the first part.

3) Zelda - my sister got a Gameboy a few years later and it was bundled with the then brand new Zelda. I wanted it badly and she wasn't into it, but refused to trade and wouldn't let me play it. So finally I traded her all my shitty games (Gator Pinball! Home Alone!) for it and she was like "haha sucker". haha

I was stuck on Dungeon 2 for over a year. I still played, replaying it to that point again and going into every single area I was allowed to. Finally I picked it up and was like "maybe Pol's Voice isn't that weird hole in the ground that sucks you in" and I was able to move on after realizing it was the rabbit.

4) GBA color - the thought of playing a console game on a handheld was fascinating to me. Super Mario Deluxe was something I dreamed about for a very long time. I finally bought a yellow Color with SMD and loved it. My friend wanted one, too, but wanted the Yellow one, so he bought a Lime Green and we traded.

5) discovered Pokemon late. I was recently turned 20 and PY had just come out. I say "late" as in I worked at Burger King and would steal promotion toys and those golden cards because I was "too old" to like Pokemon. My friend was selling pot at the time and hooked on Pokemon much more than me - he's the one who got me into it. I remember him having to hide the GBC under the couch when his buyers would show up. Finally I moved in with a good female friend of mine under the assumption that we were just going to be roommates - which lasted about 4 hours. She had every VHS of pokemon, a ton of Pikachu toys laying around, etc, and suddenly I was like "fuck, I'm too old for this" and it was like I "passed on" my love of the series to her and haven't played much since.

6) how awesome those boxes looked. Everything was neon and lasers and Tron-like. The design of the system (thank you Yokoi!) looked incredible, even to this day and it was such a desirable thing to have. Some of my fondest memories are sitting outside on a beautiful day playing Gameboy - it was like I actually grew fond of the outdoors because there I could adventure while looking out to the flat, endless horizon of the Great Plains and think about having real adventures.

Game Boy is just another one of those things that seems to validate the way Nintendo does things.

Nobody expected a machine with such piddly hardware and a terrible green screen to last as long as it did, especially with everyone and their mom making superior devices with better graphics, sound and input from jump. When 1997 came around, nobody was sitting there thinking that a 10-year old machine that was already too outdated years prior was suddenly going to come back and be ultra-relevant because of some stupid game about capturing monsters either.

But that's exactly what happened. The Game Boy was amazing, because it wasn't considered an afterthought by the people putting titles out for it. Nintendo made full-fat games for the thing using their best IP (even creating future aces like Wave Race, Kirby and others) on it. All third parties were making full-fat releases for it, Japanese or otherwise. I got mine in 1992-ish with Tetris and Kirby's Dreamland (and then I got Super Mario Land 1 and 2 for Christmas that year). I still have my OG brick with me as well.

That run with the original GB, followed by the Pocket (I had a clear one), the Color (I had a purple one and a Pokemon one) and the Advance (I have a black one and had a purple SP) was legendary.

Best games on original GB/GBC:
- Link's Awakening/LA DX
- Super Mario Land 2
- Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3
- Tetris/Tetris DX
- Wave Race
- Pokemon RBY
- Pokemon GSC
- Metroid 2
- SMB DX
- Pokemon TCG
- Mario Golf
- Motocross Maniacs

Best games on GBA:
- Golden Sun 1/2
- Advance Wars 1/2
- Metroid Fusion
- Gunstar Super Heroes
- Advance Guardian Heroes
- Mega Man Zero 1/2/3/4
- Mega Man Battle Network 1/2/3
- Ninja 5-0

My first foray into handhelds was the Gameboy pocket. Looking back, I only had pokemon games from gameboy to gameboy color :P

The gba was ok but I didn't get serious into the library until the SP, man that thing blew my mind at the time. Rechargeable battery, backlight. Playing in the dark had new meaning after that.

Jurassic Park:
The level 1 music from this game is actually from some C64 games; Comic Bakery and Top Gun. Its a really good conversion. Its not just Oceans licensed SNES games that got better than they deserved soundtracks.

Good music brings me to an odd memory regarding counterfeit games from holidays in Lanzarote. Yeah the 8-in-1 was fairly obvious but Pac-Man and Snoopy Magic show were not so. Well, the Nintendo emboss is missing, Pac-Man also ate the batteries as you had to to constantly dial the contrast (something I don't miss) as the picture faded in and out.

Speaking of the 8-in-1 it had neat games including the Japanese release of Serpent; Kakumon Hebi:
whatgame.jpg

I liked the music. Its quite long for a GB game, I believe it actually 5 songs that play one after the other (making me wonder if it was supposed to dynamic) then loop (well to a version of the first part sans intro), the video is wrong, at 2:45 it should loop back to 0:09.

Oh you want to know what else on the 8-in-1. Pipe Dream, Space Invaders, Master Karateka, Klax (with added cheat, hit select for instant piece even while paused), Motorcross Madness, Doctor Mario and Alleyway. So all pretty early GB stuff.

Ah, my parents gave me a Gameboy on Christmas when I was on my 2nd grade. My first GB game was Rockman World (Megaman 1).

Well I found Pokemon silver and my two GBC's (Yellow and Turquoise), but I think the button cells need replacing for some of my carts, sigh.

I just caved in and bought an original Gameboy off Ebay for £30 in mint condition (just the console). Also picked up Tetris (obviously!) and Pokemon yellow with a new battery installed (even though i've never played a Pokemon game before).

Can't wait for it to arrive, like being a kid at Christmas again!
