[GameIndustry.biz] God of War Ragnarok is already the biggest launch in the franchise’s history | UK Time Tunnel

Nice coping.

Unless you live under a rock, there's been ads on TV, outdoors, 2 State of Play's, we got Game Informer with those little videos, we got that recap video, multiple articles on accessibility features, etc.

It's everywhere. I don't get how anyone can say the marketing for this game is lacking. It's similar to a hollywood blockbuster almost, lmao.
That is just contradictory of what other people say as counterpoint:

"God of war dosen't need marketing"

Which is false as you are pointing out.

If you see Ragnaroks marketing cycle is so obvious that it was weird. Which is what I am saying.

i choose to believe, it was because of the pandemic and that they were crunching their ass off to make this happen.

wtf?
Day one...physical alone was bigger in 2022 than God of War (2018) in its first full week? Holy shit?

And all this in a time physical media is dying...

Yeah this is breaking TLOU2 record for sure.
Really impressive for sure. Worth to note though, based on last fiscal report by Sony more than a third of games sales are physical and that stat is even more evenly split for big single player releases like this one.

If these were overall sales, it would be an outstanding result to outsell in one day what the previous entry did in 1 week. But the fact as much as 50% of sales (being pessimistic here) might still be missing is unreal if you think about it.

It's awesome but a little bummed after the Thor fight(amazing!). Everything else has felt like the first game again with better traversal again. Which is fine, but that fight was something else, I want to see him again. Best Thor ever. What is up with the boat all the time again too? These games take place in Waterworld?

Game seems pretty polished from what I've read. Doubt they rushed it otherwise there would have been more issues.

It just makes you wonder about if maybe more direct sequels will become a thing? Game developers have got " episodic content " wrong this whole time. Poeple dont want small episodes they want full games for episodes.

It's very expensive and very few studios can operate at such a high level as SSM. Episodic content can be both economical/lucrative for the developer and satisfying for the gamer. I personally feel that's the only sensible path for the majority of studios.

I wonder if cross-gen is here to stay so that they can keep pulling these kind of numbers. Can't wait for the Spider-Man 2 PS4 meltdown.
this gen is unusual as the architecture is so similar and with res bump using so much performance many games won't really be held back by the last gen, once we start seeing more 30fps games at sub 4k cross-gen will lose viability for those games,
but given digital distribution keeps costs down and the similarity of another year or 2 of major titles and few beyond that of minor titles will keep being
how does it compare to TLOU2 and COD?
Uk only so limited scoop from this news but probably in the same ball park as last of us 2 (+/- 10%) probably going to be between 3.6 and 4.4 million copies week, not call of duty numbers but nothing is

Though all the 1 day more than 1 week oh muh gawd people day 1 made up the bulk of week 1 son blockbusters like gow

This is one of those all ships rise types of games where gaming in general gets a lot of positive exposure when they do well, so I'm happy it is selling the way it is. This is also the type of competition that is amazingly healthy for the business.
