Gamepass subs increased from 18 million to 30 million from Jan 2021?

I reckon it should have at least 30 mill subs by now that's on the lower end of the scale for me , I'd expect every Xbox console owner to be have a sub (why wouldn't you?) and a good portion of the pc crowd aswell .... Come to think of it Xbox sold 50 mill consoles last gen and opened up to millions upon millions more on pc so I'd really expect gamepass to actuall be way higher than 30 mill considering the playerbase they are open to now and if not there's something wrong imo .

Reminder: You can still use the Xbox Live trick to gain Gamepass a lot cheaper. I just did it yesterday, it still works.

You have to have like another account or something to do that right? Like I'm already a subscriber, so I couldn't take advantage of this under my main account?

Subscribing for the first time on Friday for £1.

Hopefully I can sign-up again using a different Hotmail account for November (for Forza) for a quid too??

I think it's going to make unprecedented growth due to simple word of mouth, the three people who I've showed the service to have all signed up. My son has got all his friends to sign up so they can all play the same games together without much outlay.
When people realise the value they snatch at it.

Oh don't worry, we know.

You'd have to let the GP sub expire I think, and have never done the promo to convert for $1. Then load up Gold, then convert. From what I understand. I did it in July. Bought 3 years of Gold for about $180, then converted it to 3 years GP for $1.

Chances are he knows exactly what it is and accidentally said it out loud. He even said afterwards it's clearly more than 18 million. He may not know the precise number off the top of his head down to the tens and ones, but I guarantee you he isn't far off. Phil's reaction speaks volumes.

Take Two does business with Microsoft and their Game Pass service. They know the inner details of how well it's doing, and must kind of always know in order to keep whatever arrangement worked out fair and equitable.

I'm taking this as confirmation it's at 30 million or close enough. And this is even better Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, Redfall and Starfield have dropped.

I always believed, and still to this day, that the magic number for Game Pass is 40 million. Once it hits that number there's simply no stopping what it can be for Xbox and Microsoft.

Havent we gotten exact percentage points of growth on services per quarterly report? Wouldnt someone be able to extrapolate increases at whatever they started with at the beginning of the year? I dont believe 30 million because personally Going from 18 million, to thirty with no major software drops and hardware less than 10 million sold in a year? That would assume game pass has a 100 percent attach rate per console sold which is impossible. There is no way this number is real.

Unless theyre including people who have subbed, dropped the sub, resubbed, etc. Zellnick has been critical of the gamepass model in the past, maybe this was more of slight at gamepass like "Youve at least reached 30 million, right phil wink wink."

And since the numbers arent close to 30 million all phil can do is say 18 million is the official number.
Laugh at doubters of godpass

30 million before Starfield even. Before Halo, Fable, Perfect Dark, Gears, Hellblade 2, Avowed. Before they put out the Cloud stick for a cheaper casual entry price.

It's pretty safe to say they have a shot at rapid growth continuing in the future. Starfield alone will be an event for millions of people.

Microsoft treats things nobody cares about like xcloud like the second coming and make mountians out of mole hills almost daily. And you want me to believe theyve just been sitting on 30 million subscribers like its no big deal? How gullible are some of you?
Why do people here constantly throw these blanket statements as if they apply to everyone. I care about xCloud and I have seen many people here to. Not to mention people I know outside of GAF.

I didn't care much until I used it.. its an amazing service. I can't find a single negative thing about them trying to make cloud gaming work. Its a win for gamers across the board.

Exactly this. Starfield will be a major event for millions of gamers. No question about it. Halo Infinite, a game that I personally always had as one of my most anticipated games of this gen period, after these flights, is looking like it could turn out to be way bigger than even I was expecting. It has me seriously wanting to play multiplayer for the first time ever. I've said this before, and ultimately just went campaign alone as usual. This time is actually different. I WILL be playing Halo Infinite multiplayer.

How do you use it? Mobile? PC? I'm thinking of getting a Kishi controller.

30 million subs at $1 each. My math says that's about $30. Xbox is doomed.

Probably won't happen but I'm still holding out hope for a surprise BF2042 on GamePass Day 1 announcement! #Believe

From 18 Million to 30 Million :messenger_hushed: That would be an amazing jump!

I'd like to think they'd make a much bigger deal about it, that's quite an accomplishment!

Guess you don't read much news...18 million was the latest official number at the start of this year.

The narrative "whatever number before forza and halo launch" is kind of silly because having these two games coming to gamepass certainly drove some of those new subs already, you can't say that people who want to play those games will only sign up for gamepass once the games launch.

Get one of these. $8.

Better to just literally use your same Xbox controller than buy a cheap mobile one. And this is even cheaper.

30 million criminals. Gamepass should be illegal.

Eiyudin Chronicles looks great but I want more Japanese games Day 1.

This is the funniest and best post I've read on here in years. I'm laughing because I really do genuinely believe like I'm stealing when I just enter game pass and just up and play whatever the hell I want. It's like being a kid, being let loose inside a store full of videogames and being able to play whatever you want in the comfort of your home without having to buy any of them. Back when blockbuster cards was a thing. I had to pay like $5 and change just to rent out each game for a few days. Then if I wanted to do it again, I had to come back like 3-4 days later and pay again to sign out that same game.

But with Game Pass, I'm not individually renting on a per title or per game basis at all. For one monthly price, I'm leaving with blockbuster's entire fucking collection! :messenger_tears_of_joy:

So, yes, 30 million criminals indeed.

Yeah, Phil can't just drop details like that, so this means little. If it's 25m, 30m or 35m Phil can't correct him either way.

However, what's more important than exact figures is that only one company appears to be on the path to successfully creating the long-heralded "Netflix of games" and that's Microsoft. It has to make the others nervous.

As for me, I did the Xbox Live Gold trick to get three years for $180 exactly a year ago. So my first year cost me $60. I calculated that of the games I played through fully, their cost at the time I played them would have totaled $605. That's $605 worth of games for $60. Yes, they're rentals. I still bought other games I care about. But the value is simply insane. Getting MLB The Show, Flight Sim and Psychonauts 2 on launch day for "free" saved me $180 alone.

If MS can get people to pay, say $120 per year for gamepass and hit 40m subs within the next year, that's 5 billion dollars revenue a year. Suddenly the crazy maths start to work out. And they're still going to be selling games like Forza Horizon, Halo and Starfield to non-gamepass users on top of that.

Add that to a year in which they've had great releases like Psychonauts 2 and Flight Sim with FH5 and Halo to come and it's just all really promising.

You're right I don't read much gaming news apart from on here , what I was getting at is that if it was 30 mil subs by now I don't view that as phenomenol growth given the amount of potential users across all platforms they have and how long gamepass has been going for, It's a strange thing considering it does give value for money .

The number of subscribers is likely to fluctuate in my opinion. I had it for 3 months, then stopped Subscribing. But then, I may subscribe again when more games have been released that appeal to me. Then stop again. That's my plan, to subscribe for a month or two every now and again just for the bangers.

Maybe... if it is true... they will announce it at TGS
TGS, idk man. TGS is pretty niece, i think. They've seem to be pretty content with blasting news on all social platforms... which is really a great place to do announcements, everyone's on there all time.

If true, I wonder that catalyst triggered such a jump.

On PC.

The way I use it is to test and see if I like the game before I commit to download/install. Its click and play, no hassle. I did for Hades, the ascent, psychonauts 2, GTA, and I just gave Control a go last night, still not sure if I like it enough to download it, but I'll play some more this week and see.

The other thing is, you can pick up and play those on any device.. I was messing around with psychonauts 2 on my laptop, it works great.

There is zero chance I would've bothered with any of these games if it wasn't for gamepass and xcloud. Going on steam and buying games now feels rather outdated and I haven't done so in almost a year.

Now, its not perfect.. fast paced games don't run all that great, you would want those locally, but all else is not a problem.

If only Neogaf mods will ban people like you, because dammit bro wtf! Because if I was a mod on this website I would ban people like you who put out such an ignorant statement. First, off you do not speak to anyone in that regard secondly then you better cancel your PS Plus subscription then cause they offer good games. People like you are the reasons why the gaming community, in general, is straight trash. Listen, kid, if you are a fanboy just say that instead of putting up this hush, hush crappy comments and take the L cause, yes people are interested, and yes if Sony made a Gamespass I bet your ass you would be licking the boot of Sony. The thing is you are on here and you do not have a defense system like those fanboys on Twitter where they would say such stupid comments and get their army behind them......Not on here, you won't. You are in the wrong neighborhood.

Would like to see Gold membership trended along with Game Pass membership. Not sure why a person would only keep gold and not do the conversion. In 2013 they had 46 million gold subscriptions. I know it went down during the Xbox one gen but I don't get wowed by these reported increases.

That's a lot of $1 3 year plans
There are no $1 3 year plans.

You buy three years of Live Gold at $60 and upgrade for $1. So it's $181 for three years.

That's what I and most others who did the $1 trick did. It's still $60 per year to MS that they wouldn't otherwise have got. Framing it as $1 for three years is disingenuous.

The 1 dollar conversion deal is only the first time, it doesn't work more than once.

To get the Xbox Live deal:
- Let your GamePass subscription expire, don't renew. If you have an existing GamePass subscription when you add Xbox Live, it only converts it to the GamePass price and you save nothing, you have to let it expire completely.
- With your Game Pass expired, buy Xbox Live cards (plenty of websites sell them cheap, usually 40 or 50 bucks for a year) and redeem them on the Xbox website.
- When you have your Xbox Live subscription active, buy one month of GamePass, and all the Xbox Live months you have will turn into GamePass Ultimate.

Sounded a lot like how we humans just pluck a figure out of thin air because we want to emphasize the figure is a lot, but the real number, if know, probably isn't going to get the message across that what we're trying to say is 'the number is huge'.

Like you might say 'dude have you seen how many versions of Cheerios there are, there's hundreds now'. There are not hundreds, but there's a damn lot of them.

Though, figure of 30m is probably not too far away.

Our first official figure was 10m and then we had another update 5 months later of 15m - so 1m per month. That period covered the lockdown era.
Our latest figure of 18m was 4 months later - so 750k per month. That period covered the holiday season.

With just 3 figures to go by we can't conclude growth is slowing already, so perhaps a range of 500k-1.25m per month is feasible, which will put you at 23m to 29m total.

1. We haven't gotten exact growth percentages. For instance, in the last FY, MS only said something like "Gamepass saw growth".
2. I don't think they will/can do that. Interestingly, they never explicitly used the term MAU when they announced 18 million, but I'm still assuming they were talking about MAU, because that's the only metric that matters with subscription services. And it'd be very misleading if they don't talk about MAU when they reveal sub count. So I'm assuming it's MAU, and then it doesn't matter if it includes people who resubbed, because they are all valid numbers as long as they reveal MAU numbers.

Phil, take your meds. It was just my persoanl opionion and satya didnt read it, dont worry.

Whats wrong with gaming is we get these insane, asinine, completely unverifiable rumors and misinformation from the same crowd almost daily. The crowd that will treat indie games coming to gamepass like its a triple aaa banger IP so yes, some of us are skeptical whenever we get news about xbox because of the nonstop flood of misinformation coming from that one side. MS never confirmed this, they never even confirmed 23 million back in the day, that was jez corden rumor that was never corroborated by MS in any official capacity.
